HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY ““““MILK AND HONEYMILK AND HONEYMILK AND HONEYMILK AND HONEY” ” ” ” WORDSWORDSWORDSWORDS

Every family has its own culture. Every family has memories of not just shared experiences, but of the words that illustrate those moments. Recently, one of my brothers recalled a phrase that we had used to chide him for years after he criticized one element of a family trip, over thirty years ago. The repetition of language becomes a memory itself, setting forth not just the story from which it emerged but a common unifying touchstone.

Our parsha contains such a phrase. When challenging Moshe, Datan and Aviram make the point that he has not succeeded in bringing the Jewish people to “a land flowing with milk and honey.” They take this dream and reverse it. They assert that Moshe took the people from “a land flowing with milk and honey” i.e. Egypt, and they jump-oP this turn-of-phrase to caustically question his leadership.

God first used the phrase “a land flowing with milk and honey” to promote the plan to depart Egypt (Exodus 3:4). Moshe conveyed it to the people. The image motivated the people, lodging itself in their collective mind. In last week’s portion, even the spies, returning from their tour of the land, confirm that the land was “flowing with milk and honey,” as promised (Numbers 13:27).

The Torah continues to use the phrase, fifteen times in total. The phrase becomes synonymous with the goodness of Israel, so much so that we rarely stop to consider its meaning. Are streets paved with gold? Does milk flow like water upon a riverbed? The words figuratively describe a life of promise and prosperity. We all get that.

Our Torah, as a whole, is an ongoing touchstone, like the “milk and honey” phrase. It references our common past and our common dreams. Like a family, we partake of its deep imprint within our souls to communicate with one another. May we merit to do so when sharing happy and joyous moments.
