UOS is proud to be one of the community participants in the Houston Jewish Community Foundation’s Create a Legacy Program. As a participant we are planning for the future of our congregation by asking our members to make plans for a legacy gift to UOS. There are several ways this can be accomplished, but we first ask for a Letter of Intent, indicating your support. The form is avail-able in the office. Brochures are available in the foyer, and the members of this committee are anxious to speak with you; they are Nada Chandler (713-256-1030), Joe Blog (713-530-5337) and Basil Joffe (713-302-6691). Feel free to contact them for more information. Our goal is to have a very large percentage of our members participate and we look forward receiving the completed Letter of Intents send to the office. Please do not assume that someone else will help us reach this goal – it is up to you! Please note that you may designate one of the other partici-pating organizations, as well as designating UOS.
For more information, please see our web site at http://www.uosh.org/uoslegacy.html

Adam Hoffman (Shevet Tzion) Madrich for Shevet Maapilim This past week, my group learned about the challenges in building the Tower of Babel. As an activity, the kids were split into two teams in which one person was a "looker", "teller", or "builder." One person from the team would look at a structure, tell another person, who would, in turn, tell the builder how to build the structure. Similar to the Tower of Babel, the children had trouble communicating. We learned through this game that not only is communication and unity important, but also individuality and uniqueness as well.
Battle of the Streets Maya Wadler (Shevet Tzion) Madricha for Shevet Haro'eh
This past weekend we had an amazing program called 'Battle of the Streets.' This week was the first of many street meals we will have. The way it works is that each part of the meal is eaten at a different house, and afterwards each street will be awarded a score for their meal. This past Shabbat we ate each course at differ-ent houses on Sarong. I really enjoyed this program and hope it continues to be a great success.
Shalom, There may very well be an expectation that this week's Dvar Torah will talk about Aliyah, as we are reading the parsha of Lech L'cha. And now that Trump was just elected, it may be that many are considering to flee... But in any case, the main story in this week's parsha is the emergence and character development of Av-raham. There's a lot we can learn about him, through the textual stories before us and the midrashim that further expound them. One such story takes place upon Avraham's return from defeating the united armies of the 4 kings, and returning Lot (and presumably other captives as well) to their city of Sdom. Upon their return, they grant Avraham a generous reward for his action - all of their physical property. Avraham replies modestly yet confusingly: I will not take anything, from a string to a shoelace. This is odd, as the range given by Avraham is actually quite small. We might have expected him to say, any-thing from a string to a flock of sheep, something that would encompass anything he might receive, from a small value to a large one. The Chizkuni actually interprets the pasuk that way, explaining that the 'string' is actually the name of a jewelry piece worn in the hair, and is quite expensive. However, this is not the only time such an example is used to include a wide range. In parshat Nitzavim the same technique is used: from the wood-chopper to the water-drawer. And again in Megilat Esther: from Hodu to Kush (according to most geographic study these are two cities right next to each other). Rav Shimshon Refael Hirsh explains that this technique is used when perceiving things as a cycle - meaning for us to say from Lech-Lecha to Noach. Although there is actually a very short distance between the two, if we go from the other direction, it encompasses all the Torah. It would be like travelling from Houston to San Antonio by going East, and therefore encompassing the entire world. Therefore, Avraham is referring to all property. This Shabbat, as we celebrate the Shabbat Project, we try to include every Jewish family and individual in the commemoration of Shabbat. Or, in the words of Avraham Avinu, from the youth to the young adults. Bnei Akiva strives for this all over the world, trying to connect youth and families to Judaism and its values.
Shabbat Shalom
