August 12, 2018

Dear Friends,

After Fr. Tom and I addressed the current crisis of sex abuse and cover-ups, I could tell many people were upset and

angry. No wonder: our shepherds need to lead and protect the flock and when they fail, the Church suffers.

Some people told me they feel helpless in the situation, especially when loved ones leave the Church with the excuse

of scandals. What can we do? More studies, commissions and rules won’t get us out of this mess. The way forward

is a more spiritual one. I offer a few suggestions how people like you can lead us out of this crisis.

● The first job of every Catholic is personal holiness. Lay people need to make up what is sometimes lacking in

the clergy and among the bishops. Do adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Pray the Rosary. Offer up sacri-

fices for them and for the Church. Live like real Catholics with integrity. No more coasting. This is not the

time for passive pew sitters but real disciples.

● Band together in families. Pass on the faith, preserve virtue, provide fellowship and mutual support. The

“domestic church” is an old-fashioned idea that deserves a revival. Insist that your kids live the faith. The

mission of married people is to help their spouses and children get into heaven and only lay people can do

this. Take charge of your family’s spiritual health. You are responsible before God for them.

● Feed your soul with good stuff. One proof the Holy Spirit is alive and acting in the Church is the huge num-

ber of excellent lay apostolates for teens and adults. Many of them are offered right at our parish. Join up

and deepen your understanding of your faith. Make it personal.

● Hold your church leaders accountable. This is a new thing for Catholics brought up in a different time. “Pray,

pay, and obey” is the old saying. No more. Bishops and priests need support, but they also should be called

out when they are wrong. Write letters. It’s okay to speak up when something has gone bad.

● Support your priests and build up the parish. Create an atmosphere of support, friendship, respect and

accountability. Pray for them. Let them know you have their back and you support them. Challenge them to

be the best they can, the priests God called them to be. Best positive and honest and they will welcome your

frank input. Help them with the financial and business needs of the parish and free them up to lead the

parish in prayer and spirituality. Challenge them to be the spiritual leaders they signed up to be.

We love our Church and we love our God, but we are all too very human and we mess it up. That’s why we need

each other.

God bless,

Fr. Richard

speak lord

your servant is listening Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

“Samuel did not yet recognize the Lord, since the word of the Lord had not yet been re-vealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “ Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, ‘Speak, Lord, for your secant is listening.’” When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the Lord came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” —1 Samuel 3:7-10 Several years ago, a woman came to me who was out of work and unsure of where to turn. After taking a strenghts assessment, we explored the many gifts God had given her. She had only done one type of job her entire life up until this point, so she began to learn how she was not defined just by that previous experience. She had so much more to offer. After exploration, I had her take a phonebook and create a list of ten jobs that she thought might require the

gifts we had identified. Even if she knew little about the occupation or never saw herself doing that job, she was to create a list to the best of her ability. Even before she fin-ished the list, she stepped forward armed with a renewed vision of herself and found a job. It was something she could not have imagined before our discussions. Samuel heard a voice and tried to respond. Not knowing who was calling him, his response netted him no gain. It was not until Eli advised him on how to respond that he met up with his destiny as a prophet of God. No call from God is made in isolation from the community. Others can see in us gifts and talents that sometimes we cannot. Discernment enables disciples to become the best of stewards, allowing for the knowledge where they can grow and become the creation that God intended. Apart from the Body of Christ, not only can we not func-tion as God intended, but we are unsure where we fit in the first place. The church needs more Samuels so that the Good News can greater impact our society. To that end, there is at least one Eli for every Samuel. God is calling and it is up to us to respond accordingly. Idea for response Make a list of the different roles you have in life (parent, child, worker, student, etc.) and reflect on where God is in each of those roles. Take time to reflect Who are 3 people in my life that I trust to help me discern how God is calling me and to what He is calling me?

profession of candidates in the secular franciscan order On Saturday, July 21, in St. Lawrence O’Toole Church three new members joined the San Damiano Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order. Louisa Bisogno, Angela Milano, and Catharine Quaranta stood before the altar with the fraternity minister Judy Bruen, the formation director Kathy DelBono, the fraternity witness Susan Williams, and the Father Solanus Casey, Regional Spiritual Assistant, Fa-ther Cidouane Joseph, OFM, to pledge their permanent commitment to the Gospel life in the footsteps of St. Fran-cis of Assisi. Their words were greeted with applause from the large congregation of family, friends, and their Franciscan sisters and brothers who had supported them in their journey toward that day. The ceremony was a part of the Mass of Profession, sol-emnly celebrated by Father Cid, with beautiful musical ac-companiment by Sheila Valastro and Lou Milano, whose mother was professed. The luncheon that followed the Mass was a joyful celebration with family and friends. The lives of the newly professed had begun with a three month period of orientation while attending monthly fra-ternity meetings, getting to know us, observing and asking questions. Then for two years they met with the formation director once a month to study the life of St. Francis, the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order, and to pray for dis-cernment about their vocations. During this time they were also sharing in the fraternity life by attending the regular monthly meetings. They joined the professed members in our apostolates: clothing for CAP and St. Christopher’s Inn, religious articles for the missions, food for the Grayfriars, bag lunches for the Winter Shelter, Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homebound, witness at Planned Parenthood, gifts for

RCIA and RCIT and the First Communion children, stipends to a local family, as well as to a family in India, to lepers in the Amazon, to the Anderson Center for Autism, to the St. Anthony Shelter in the Bronx, and more. They took part in the Transitus of St. Clare, our altar for the Corpus Christi celebration, and the Christmas service. Louisa, Angie, and Cathy bring to our fraternity their tal-ents and strong commitment to the Gospel life. We welcome them most warmly and rejoice that they have become our Franciscan sisters in the love of St. Francis and St. Clare.
