Past the dining room is the state-of- the- art kitchen, complete with sub-zero fridge, a 48” Viking commer- cial stove, granite counter- tops, custom Dura-Supreme cabinets and two massive butcher block islands that are perfect for prep-work or just sitting and enjoying a meal or cup of coffee. This space is a combination of the original kitchen and Dr.’s office. “It was Martha’s goal to have an updated kitchen that looked like it always belonged to the house”, Brenda Larson of Creative Solutions said.” She went to great lengths to keep the integrity of the home, and she did a great job!” Kevin Kowatch was able to match the original texture work and Ed Deg and Dave Bower did the carpentry work, including the handmade plastered hood, and Cre- ative Solutions supplied the design work and cabinetry. Set amongst the glistening stainless steel appliances and quartersawn oak is a massive petrified rock fireplace that adds so much character to the space. A built in pantry, wall oven and coat closet were also added. A laundry room is now where the maid’s quarters once were and it has a steam shower, Dura Supreme vanity and solid surface top, a pedestal-style washer and dryer with Dura Supreme cabinets surround- ing them and a built in iron- ing center. A person should also notice the solid surface window ledges that were built by Ed Deg. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bath and many closets tucked into ev- ery nook and cranny. “This old house has great storage space,” Tammy said. The bathroom has been remod- eled, but still looks old and even has a vintage style slipper tub and bead board walls. All of the electrical in the house was redone too by Prairie Electric, and Olson Plumbing redid all of the plumbing throughout the home. “The master bath is pretty good sized too, for an older home,” Tammy said. Mar- tha even had a small sitting area in here, but I turned that section into my office space. A dream come true…Justin and Tammy Jones always loved the home of their family friends Rocky and Martha Gorder, and they recently got the op-portunity to make it their own. In 2005, Brenda Larson decided it was time to go out on her own. After 26 years with Great Plains Supply, the opportunity to go into business presented itself. With a love of draw-ing house plans and room layouts that dated back to her childhood days with her Grandma Gabrielson, it was time to try her hand at her own business. And so Creative Solutions, based on Brenda’s ability to solve difficult layout problems for customers, was born.

Creative SolutionSAccording to Brenda, the

decision to go out on her own was simple. Brenda wanted to continue to sell cabinets, loved wood work-ing, and had excellent rela-tionships with contractors and walk in customers from her days at Great Plains. “They were a great bunch of guys and were willing to teach me what they knew. John Bock and Dick Ness were huge contributors to my love of wood, and Ted Goss even took me on job sites and taught me how to install cabinets.”

Brenda and her husband, Tim, are in this together. Tim brings more than 30 years of construction experience to the partner-ship and will do some of the custom installs as well as unload the trucks, make some deliveries, and accord-ing to Brenda, “keeps our home going,” Brenda is no stranger to the area, having lived and worked here her entire life, and will be the

first to tell you that Creative Solutions is not one of those businesses “just out to make a fast buck, and leave town. I am here to stay… we love the people of this area. They have been good to us for many generations.”

From a product stand-point Creative Solutions sells mainly cabinets, coun-tertops and closet organiz-ers. They also sell interior doors, cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures, including many of the name brands on the market today. But Creative Solutions was not created for the sole pur-pose of selling products.

The business special-izes in selling products and designs for new and remodels designed to fit any budget, from average priced remodels to high-end customer kitchens. “It is up to the customer to tell us what they want, what they can spend, and we will give them the most that we can for their money” according to Brenda. The challenge, which Brenda loves, is to take a difficult layout, draw out different scenarios, and figure out the advantages and disadvantages of each for the prospective custom-er. Brenda goes on to state she understands every cus-tomer has different wants and needs as well as budget, and the goal of the busi-ness is easy: try very hard to accommodate everyone, and to sell the best products possible for the customer’s dollar. “I do not want to sell them junk. I want them to thank me, and tell me how

much they enjoy their new house, kitchen, or bathroom area.”

Like many other busi-nesses in the community, finding time to get all the work done can be a problem. In a typical month, Brenda, Tim and the staff may be working on as many as 10-15 remodels, most often at night while their custom-ers are home. As a result, Creative Solutions is open by appointment only at this time during daytime busi-ness hours. This does not mean that they are not open for business by any means. “There has to be balance in life,” according to Brenda

and so if there is work to be done in the evenings, she may take some time off dur-ing the day. Always know, if the showroom is not open during the day, Brenda and Creative Solutions are readily available by phone and can be reached anytime at 406-480-1361. Brenda is always ready to discuss any customer’s remodel or design desires. “We welcome new homeowners and carpenters to the area. Please feel free to call for an appointment as we would love to work with you.”

Parade of HomeSWith all the business for

Creative Solutions, Brenda was finding it difficult to find time to work with the Parade of Homes. For several years she had been asked previously, but with the Boys and Girls Club needing a fundraiser last year, Brenda felt it was the perfect time.

Sidney’s Parade of Homes will be different from others. While most other community Parade of Homes are spec homes used specifically for a tour, the local tour will be composed of houses that are actually lived in. As Brenda states “The homeowners open up their homes, and we should

be honored to invade their space” as the proceeds for this tour are going to the local cause.

The 2013 Parade of Homes tour includes something for everyone. Included in the tour will be a Ranch style home, a split level home, a two story colonial, and a his-torical home, among those to be seen. And as with the variety of homes on the tour, the decorating styles will vary from house to house as well. “It is a great opportunity to showcase many styles of homes and cabinetry as well as differ-ent contractors” according to Brenda. “There is some-thing for everyone.”

The Parade of Homes tour is more than just showing a home to the public. It takes a great deal of time, and efforts from a great many volunteers to make it pos-sible. Brenda states “I am so proud of the way my friends and family and those of the home owners have pitched in to help these homeown-ers get ready. This is a lot of work for these people. I hope everyone appreciates their generosity and hard work. People have been so generous with their time to help pull off the parade. Many have offered their assistance and it is much appreciated. “

2013 Parade of Home tour will be held Sept. 29. For more information you can contact Brenda at the showroom at 406-488-1461 or on her cell at 406-480-1361. Her showroom is located at 109 3rd Ave NW in Sidney. Tickets are going fast, pur-chase yours now at Creative Solutions, TriFecta Home Center, the Boys & Girls Club or the Sidney Herald.

(StatePoint) Having trouble keeping your home comfortable year-round? You’re not alone. The average mid-size U.S. home has a staggering half mile of gaps and cracks that outside air, including dust and allergens, can infil-trate and that inside, conditioned air can leak out of, according to the Air Barrier Association of America.

Just as you wouldn’t want to leave a window open in winter or summer, you don’t want to let gaps and small holes around windows, doors, plumb-ing penetrations and electrical outlets go unaddressed.

By doing some straightforward air sealing and insulating projects around the home, homeowners can typically save up to 30 percent on home energy costs, according to the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET). Even if you’re not that handy, you’re in luck. Sealing your home is as simple as knowing your 1,2,3’s and ABC’s.

all you need to Get Started iS:• One sealant: An inexpensive product can do the

trick. Opt for a versatile sealant, such as Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant, to tackle a series of sealing projects around the home.

• Two Hours: It only takes a couple of hours to seal all those gaps and cracks that cause drafts in your home. Doing so will permanently increase the comfort, performance and energy-efficiency of your house. For a complete home sealing project checklist, visit www.GreatStuff.dow.com/pdfs/checklist.pdf.

• Three Locations: Three key locations will be impacted the most by air sealing projects -- the attic, basement and central living space. So where should you start looking?

An easy trick to remember is the ABC’s of air sealing:• A is for Attic: The attic is one of the main places

in the home you’re likely to lose heat. So in ad-dition to adding insulation, seal around the attic door to help keep air from escaping. You’ll keep heat inside your living space and make your family comfortable year-round by sealing the attic tightly to prevent drafts.

• B is for Basement: It’s damp, dark and cold, and often one of the largest air leakage culprits in the home. It’s also the most accessible, making it an excellent place to start sealing to prevent cooler air from seeping into the rest of your house.

• C is for Central Living Areas: Don’t neglect the most trafficked areas of your house where you eat, sleep, watch TV and hang out. Fill the gaps and cracks in your living spaces -- including around electrical outlets and plumbing penetra-tions -- to prevent drafts throughout the year that directly impact the comfort of the home.By sealing plumbing penetrations

with sealants like Great Stuff Insulat-ing Foam Sealants, homeowners can begin to see financial returns after less than half a month, saving $45 annually, according to a recent study conducted by Dow Building Solutions and DR Nelson & Associates.

By following easy steps to seal your home, you can put a little extra spend-ing money in your pocket and increase the overall comfort, performance and energy efficiency of your home.

Turning an existing house that needs to be updated and completely renovated is a huge undertaking, but Lee and Kelly Alvstad were up for the challenge. Not only did they update their home, but they completely redecorated with their unique style and the result is vibrant country comfort.

The Alvstsads bought their house on 15th Avenue SW in Sidney in 2009. Long-time area residents of the area know the house as the Sobolik home or more re-cently the Gilbertson home. When purchasing the home, Lee was attracted to the huge garage and nice yard, and Kelly liked the square footage of the home, the garden area and the decorat-ing challenge.

The main living area of the home was originally on the lower section of the split-level and the four bedrooms and a bathroom were on the upper section. The Alvstads added unique painting treatments and barnwood accents through-out the home In 2012, they decided to remodel their kitchen and went to Brenda Larson of Creative Solu-tions. However, as the plan-ning developed, they found out that there was a new law that would not allow anyone to get financing on a house that had a kitchen on the lower level.

The Creative Solutions team and the Alvstads went back to the drawing board and totally flipped the inside of the home. After the plans were finalized, the Alvstads set out to find a contractor. The couple had been talking with friends and found out about Kevin Brost of Brost Construction. “Kevin came up with a lot of different ideas for the kitchen and bathroom upstairs,” Lee said. “We were happy with him.”

The first thing a person notices upon entering through the front door is the massive stairway built from old cedar rails and posts that are accented with the original nails and hangers that were used when they were fencing boards. It took awhile for the posts to be built into a stairway as Lee

had many hours of sanding the old and splintered wood into a smooth surface and then applying two gallons of shellac for a beautiful fin-ish.The result is a piece of art, and Lee is so impressed, “Kevin was even able to fit the posts to the curvature of the wall.”

At the top of the stairs is a huge, yet cozy room that is the kitchen, dining room

and living room in an open-concept design. The kitchen fea-tures beau-tiful Dura Supreme cabinetry in Knotty Alder in the Bella Doorstyle with a unique custom heir-loom finish. The knotty alder enhanc-es the rustic charm that the Alvstads

love. The Basil solid-surface HiMacs countertops are easy-care and seamless, which was critical in the design of the large circular island. One of Kelly’s prized features in the kitchen has

to be the hide-a-way mixer stand in the island. “We just had to decide on the place-ment of Kelly’s must-needs in the kitchen, and this mixer stand was one of her wishes,” Brenda said. When Kelly is ready to bake, she opens the cabinet door, pulls and lifts a heavy-duty Kitchen Aid mixer from in-side the cabinet and is ready to go! “I just turn to open the fridge for my eggs and other ingredients too, which makes it easy,” said Kelly. Of course, this modern kitchen also features rollout shelves, large diagonal super susans, a hidden trash container, a pantry and many other accessories that Larson always tries to incorporate into her kitchen designs. The tiled backsplash and new stainless steel appli-ances contrast nicely with the hardwood floors, knotty alder cabinets and vibrant green walls. A dining area and large living room, show-casing a new bay window, round out the rest of this comfortable living space.

Down the hall is a small guest bathroom and a master suite, complete with unique bathroom, walk-in closet and laundry area. Another of Kelly’s favorite

things about the house is the vintage-style acrylic slipper tub that sits in front of a glass block wall that disguises a walk-in shower.

“The entire design of the bathroom was centered around that tub,” Larson said, “and Kevin did a great job of maximizing the space.”

The bathroom also in-

cludes a nice-sized vanity and toilet area Kelly also appreciates the placement of the washer and dryer in their bedroom. “I love the convenience of having the appliances so close and it doesn’t bother us to have a load in before we go to bed,” Kelly said. “We just don’t pay attention to it any-more.”

Alvstads were very enthusiastic when asked to be in the Parade of Homes. “We love this house and this community,” Kelly said. “Also as young parents, we definitely see a need for the Boys and Girls Club and are proud to be a part of this fundraiser for them.”

When asked if there would have been any changes they would make in the remodeling project, Lee considered the placement of the pantry. “A corner pan-try would’ve allowed more room for a doorway that we could use when we eventu-ally build a deck that will wrap around the backside of the house. It’s just some-thing you find out and think about as time goes on.”

And, as time goes on, so does the remodeling of this home. “Now we’re taking care of the downstairs,” Kelly said. “It’s a home in progress. We’re always go-ing to be working on some-thing!” For now Lee and Kelly and baby daughter, Skye are living comfortably in their home that is filled with love and happiness and their son, Andrew’s legacy.

Conrad and Linda Con-radsen, Savage, live in a reclamation government home, primarily built for the Lower Yellowstone ir-rigation project. The project provides irrigation water to 52,133 acres of fertile land lying along the west bank of the Yellowstone River. There are two divisions, dependent on state location, incorpo-rated into the project.

Conradsens live in Divi-sion One, which encompass-es 34,755 acres of Dawson and Richland counties in east central Montana. (information taken from Lower Yellowstone Project, by Timothy A. Dick, Bureau of Reclamation, 1993)

The home was built in 1906-07, and Con and Linda still have the plans of the original home. Clayton Lau-ridsen remodeled the house shortly after the Conradsens took over the home in 1967 when they were married.

When the Conradsens had Clayton update the home, Clayton was amazed how ac-curate and square this home was originally built. The house was built facing the ditch, so the couple wanted to flip the layout of the home as well as add square footage for their growing family.

Linda has always had a sentimental side, keep-ing the vintage look and wanting to have memories of loved ones close at hand. Linda recently remodeled her kitchen and bathroom, and she also did a makeover in the living room.

The kitchen job began with the need that her son “sure could use those old cabinets” in his home. It gave Linda the nudge she needed to contact Brenda Larson of Creative Solu-tions for project designs, styles of cabinetry and countertops, and also making some room for that pantry she wanted so desperately. “I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted,” Linda said. “My

mom, Maryann Meschke Minch, used to tell me that I needed a new kitchen, and thanks to her, I have it, and she’s smiling every day because we both loved the white cupboards, and I love the beadboard. She wanted to help every one of us, this was her gift to me.” The beadboard is also a senti-mental feature, as well as the wall pantry, due to Aunt Lila Whited. “I’ve loved that beadboard and pantry since I was 5 years old,” she said. The clean, crispness of the white Dura Supreme Cabi-nets from Creative Solutions are accented beautifully by the Congoleum vinyl, wood-plank-look floor, brick backsplash and accent walls and a rich brown, solid-sur-face countertop by Ed Deg.

(Ed also made the oak china cabinet and the TV stand in a previous remodel.) Jason Wind did the carpentry work on the entire remodel job.

Linda is quite happy with the results of this remodel because she wanted to keep the original feeling of the home, but also because she thinks of her mother and aunt every time she works in the kitchen. “Everything looks like it’s been here for years, and we love it!”

Off of the kitchen, 4x4 posts are routered with leaves, while the bathroom layout gently calls one in to take a peek at the beauti-ful river rock flooring and walls with a glass-block shower divid-er. Linda loves the bathroom that Jason Wind and Larry Hanzek created.

Although Jason was a little nervous about working with the small pebbles of river rock, Linda insisted on them after watching those DIY shows on TV, and the room turned out spectacular! The glass blocks that Larry installed, keep plenty of light filtering in while a person showers in the open-stall. The ques-tion arose of staying warm while showering without a door, but Linda was think-ing on that as well. “We just added a heat lamp above! I just love my bathroom and more so that Jason thought outside of the box on this room.” Because of the smaller quarters in this area, Linda chose to have a pocket door installed so no additional space would be lost.

Since Linda is an artist, she has a visual of what she wants, and it didn’t take much to update the living room. No walls were changed, but there had been a printed wallpaper of roses that needed to be toned down a bit. Linda added a small amount of Maca-demia glaze to mute the colored paper. She wanted to keep the paper but just change it a tad. “I just took a brush and swished a little - another idea from Brenda,” Linda said.

For many years Linda wanted a place on the lawn where the family could sit around the campfire, and

when Brenda Larson asked the Conradsens to show their home in the Parade of Homes, a goal of Linda’s was to have that fire pit put in. Linda and a few help-ers put in the forms for the concrete and then other family members showed up to finish the project. “My son-in-law Doug Whitehead has to have everything to a level, so he’s not quite sure of my design on the fire pit. Doug is a PA in Laurel, but he loves to do this kind of stuff. He and Tracy, my daughter, just went to work

on this, then they all got together and had that fire pit done in just a little bit of time!” The beautifully landscaped yard also dis-plays many of Linda’s artis-tic touches!

Throughout this remodel, Con and Linda had a few adjust-ments to make. When

the hungry farmer came home for a meal, it was usu-ally prepared on the outside cooker. “We had a lot of hamburgers!”

There has also been the issue of reaching for the things that “used to be in that place. “Con isn’t used to the transition,” Linda says. “He’s always asking, ‘Where’s the soup – where’s the pots and pans?’ He likes the new, and he’ll get used to it!” Linda stills walks around the kitchen as she sings to Con - “Have a told you lately that I love my cabinets? Have I told you lately that I love my bath-room? He gets so sick of hearing that!”

The Conradsens are proud to be part of this event with the proceeds going to the Richland County Boys & Girls Club. Linda donates to the club, and she feels that it’s a great place for chil-dren to be and to keep them safe and off the streets after school hours.

As a side note: If you’ve lived in the area for years, names may be familiar, as Linda’s folks had Johnny Sidney Radio and TV, located north of where the Chinese restaurant (the old A & W) resides today. “We lived right on Central, right on the magic turn around. I didn’t even have to drive main – we just watched the cars go by!”

Tri Fecta Home Center is slowly working up to the vision the sisters, Rebecca Benson, Teresa Benson and TJ Rost, had in mind when they opened the store in July.

The focus is currently on many different styles and colors of furniture and décor. If you don’t find what you are looking for, they can custom order it for you.

Tri Fecta offers around 15-20 quality furniture lines. Although many of the lines were picked out before opening, quite a few lines were discovered during an exhibition they attended in Las Vegas, Nev..

The Las Vegas Market is held twice a year and features more than 1,500 exhibitors featuring an ar-ray of new products from a

number of top manufactur-ers and furniture lines. At-tending this exhibition gave them the opportunity to see all the newer furniture companies and the lines they offer.

Tri Fecta likes working with the “little man compa-nies” as they are typically higher quality products. Since Tri Fecta prides itself on the quality of the fur-niture they sell, this works out perfectly. With higher quality also comes a higher price tag, but they try to keep your budget in mind. This allows them to offer exclusive design lines that no one else locally has.

The ladies at Tri Fecta are all about offering what their customers need. TJ Rost said they are “still trying to feel out what

the community needs.” As more customers come through the doors, they can get a better idea of what is needed locally. As the needs become more apparent, other products, services and styles will be offered. The plan is to eventually offer interior decorating, as well as many top finishing lines for contractors including tile, lighting and plumbing. They are slowly building up the various products they offer, with the first addition being paint, which is com-ing soon.

All three of the sisters at Tri Fecta have a keen sense of style and would be more than willing to help you pick out your dream furniture. Tri Fecta is located next to Video Hot Spot on Central Avenue in Sidney.

(StatePoint) Keeping your home in shape may not top your daily to-do list, but completing certain small seasonal tasks can save you money, time and the need to complete larger, more expensive projects in the future.

“Investing a small amount for preventative fall home maintenance can save thou-sands in the long run,” Leah Ingram, personal finance expert, says.

Don’t know where to start? The following check-list from HomeAdvisor can help homeowners prepare their homes for the cooler months:

• Clean gutters: During the year, de-bris such as leaves and twigs can pile in your gutter. Cleaning them once a year prevents problems such as water damage, roof dam-age and flooding.

•Service your furnace: A well-main-tained furnace can help save on heating costs and prevent the need for repairs. Before temperatures drop, schedule your furnace to be serviced.

• Install weather stripping: As fuel and electricity costs continue to rise, keeping your home warm without wasting money and energy is important. Weather stripping your doors and windows can make a big impact.

• Winterize sprinklers: Removing all the water that’s in the lines, pipes, fittings, valves, sprinklers and pumps will prevent your equipment from freezing, expanding and potentially breaking. Hire a profes-sional to attach an air compressor to the system to blow out the water from the lines, pipes and other parts. The service is inexpensive and a professional will know the proper amount of volume and pressure to use to ensure no water is left in the system.

• Clean your chimney: Chimney

maintenance is not optional. Deadly fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and expensive chimney repairs are serious consequences associated with neglected chimney maintenance. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends all fireplaces, chim-neys, flues and venting systems be inspected at least once a year by a pro.

• Flush your water heater: Generally speaking, water heaters are fairly reliable, so they usually aren’t top of mind. But flushing your water heater periodically can prevent leaks and promote efficiency.“Hiring a professional for

fall maintenance tasks like these is a great idea,” In-gram says. “Use a resource such as Cost Guide to research the average price of a project in your zip code before hiring a pro.”

To use Cost Guide and find a professional, visit www.HomeAdvisor.com.

(StatePoint) During fall, many homeowners focus on small upgrades and improvements. The turning season is the perfect time to find and correct potential compromises in your home before they become larger, and more costly, renovation issues.

“Whether it is routine home exterior checks or appliances purchases, there are many ways homeowners can conduct basic, inexpen-sive home maintenance,” said Harold “Bud” Dietrich, member of the American In-stitute of Architects Custom Residential Architecture Network.

DIY Home InspectIonMany people don’t know

that they should perform twice-a-year home inspec-tions. The prime time for these inspections is in the spring and fall. Take the time to give your house a thorough review.

Start by walking the perimeter of your property to see if there is any rotting wood, mold, loose gutters or shingles. Then check for any cracks that have settled or work that could be done to siding, roofing or win-dows.

Inspect the bathroom and kitchen for loose or miss-ing tiles and leaks in sinks and faucets. Ensure that appliances are working at maximum capacity.

Although these may not seem like major issues, it is much easier to tackle them during milder seasons so potential problems aren’t made worse by extreme weather.

exterIor UpDatesMany people underesti-

mate the seriousness of dirt and mulch covering the sid-ing of a home. Most build-ing codes actually require at least six inches of the foundation to be exposed.

Beyond breaking these codes, dirt and mulch build-up pulls moisture from the ground and causes it to develop in the walls. Eventu-

ally mold will start to grow, which can lead to a variety of indoor air quality and structural problems. Rak-ing around the foundation of your home regularly can help combat this problem.

Another area to consider for easy updates is exterior paint. Peeling paint isn’t only unattractive; it also exposes the siding of your home to the elements. Regu-lar maintenance of areas that need re-painting can save major headaches down the line.

UpDatIng applIancesBuying new appliances

can be an investment, and, as such, paying a higher price upfront can actually save you money in the long run. The right appliances can last for 20 years or more, while more inexpensive models often break down after a few years. Newer

models are also often more energy efficient. If cost or budget is an issue, store display models are often offered at extremely dis-counted prices.

Also make an investment in flooring and countertops. Buying laminate counter-tops will initially be cheaper than granite countertops, but in 10 years the granite countertops will still look brand new, while the lami-nate will be worn out and need to be replaced.

An architect can help homeowners apply many of these cost-saving home improvements in smart and strategic ways. To find one in your area, visit: http://architectfinder.aia.org/.

Don’t wait. Fall is the ideal time to make small improvements that will save you money and time later on.

Smart improvements can save money

(StatePoint) In cool weather, wise homeowners will take steps to en-sure their homes are well-prepared. There are a number of ways you can keep your home comfortable and your energy bills in check all season.

Is your heating equipment work-ing optimally or are you wasting energy and paying more than you should?

It is estimated that nearly half of all heating and cooling equipment in U.S. homes never performs to its advertised capacity and efficiency due to incorrect installa-tion, according to U.S. government statistics. And if you have an older system that was built before current efficien-cy standards, you could be spending more than needed on heating your home.

If you need to replace your system, be sure to have it properly installed by an HVACR professional, certified by North Ameri-can Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest independent, nonprofit cer-tification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are skilled pro-fessionals who have proven their knowledge in the HVACR industry by pass-ing specialized certification tests.

Beyond having an efficient heating system properly installed, there are several other steps you can take to make your home cool-weath-er friendly:

• Clean heating filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change

them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer.

• Check and maintain insulation. Improperly insulated walls, floors, attics, basements and crawlspaces drain away heat and can also lead to moisture imbalance. Add-ing weather stripping and caulk around windows and doors can also improve a home’s insulation.

• Turn down the thermostat or install a programmable thermostat to regulate temperature.

• Clean the furnace area. Don’t keep chemicals or cleaning products near a heater, and don’t store any-thing next to it that could impede ventilation.

• Keep vents and returns free of obstructions. Don’t lay carpet over vents, place furniture over or in front of them, or obstruct the flow of air.

• Dry air feels cooler than moist air,

so install a humidifier. A simple humidifier may make the home feel five degrees warmer than a home with dry air.

• Look into geothermal heating sys-tems. By using the earth`s natural heat, these systems are among the most efficient and energy-conserv-ing heating and cooling technolo-gies currently available.

• Have your system serviced regu-larly for optimal performance. To avoid poor service and scams, be sure to hire an HVACR professional certified by NATE. To find a quali-fied local contractor who employs certified technicians, look for the NATE logo or go to HVACRAdvice.com. By making sure your

heating system is operating efficiently and by adopting a few energy-friendly habits, you can maintain a warm, comfortable home while keeping heating costs down.

Is your home’s heating system ready for cool weather?
