Bottom Line The most important financial term for a startup… the net earnings or income 

Gross Margin Expressed as a percentage. Total revenue after cost of sales

Fixed vs Variable Costs Fixed, does not increase or decease with volume. Variable, fluctuate with

volumeEquity vs Debt  Equity, money obtained from investors in exchange for ownership. Debt

comes in the form of loans from banks that must be repaid over time

Leverage If you have way more debt than equity, you will be considered “highly

leveraged” aka “very risky” to potential investors
