    This Student Guides primary purposes are: to give you an accessible routeinto important rules, policies and regulations o the University that you, as astudent, are required to observe; and to highlight to you the dierent aspects olie in UCD, rom student societies to on-campus services.

    Please Tal.iePlease Talk began in January 2007 in UCD as aresponse to the deaths o several students inthe college by suicide. UCD sta and studentselt something had to be done. Please Talkurges students to understand that talking is asign o strength, not o weakness, and i youreexperiencing problems while at college, thereare people there to talk to. It promotes thismessage through a joint eort between varioussupport services in the college and UCD StudentsUnion. These support services include: chaplains,

    counsellors, student advisers, the welare ocer,disability support services and many more.

    The Please Talk Committee is made up o sta andstudents and was established in 2009 to promotethe campaign and organise new ways to get themessage across and support students. Since then,Please Talk has ran a number o events all overthe UCD campus including breakast mornings indierent aculties, mental health talks, a candle-lit vigil on November 2nd, a t-shirt competition,and many others. These events aim to increase theawareness o Please Talk but also to promote themessage that talking is a sign o strength.

    Please Talk is growing. This year we hope to addto the annual events with treasure hunts, supportgroups, barbeques, and much more. You too canget involved in the campaign by dropping down to

    Rachel, the Welare Ocer, or emailing [email protected]. Please Talk needs you so it can continuehelping your ellow students and saving lives.

    Please Talk urges students tounderstand that talking is a sign ostrength, not o weakness, and i youre

    experiencing problems while at college,there are people there to talk to.

    The chaplains are part o the network osupport involved in the whole student

    UCD oers rst year undergraduate students an opportunity to be part o a peermentoring programme. This programme aims to provide rst years with on-goingpeer support during their rst year at UCD. Mentors are students themselves, andmeet with rst years a number o times during the year to discuss any problems orchallenges that arise while settling into UCD.

    Linking in and staying connected with your Peer Mentor is a great way to ensureyou get involved and stay in the picture.

    The Peer Mentoring programme is co-ordinated by the Student Advisers, with

    a dedicated Student Development Ocer coordinating the Arts Peer MentorProgramme.

    These objectives are delivered through the newly established UCD Access Centrewhich works with the universitys academic schools and programmes to meet their

    ambitious widening participation targets.The Adult Education Centre, which provides a suite o fexible support and studyoptions or part-time students, also works with universitys academic schools andprogrammes to address the universitys fexible learning ambitions. The DisabilityAccess Ocer, working with the Director o Access and Lielong Learning,undertakes the co-ordination o an institution-wide approach to the provision oaccessible buildings and acilities, inormation and communications systems, aswell as creating a supportive work environment within UCD.

    The UCD Access Centre was established in 2010 to work with the universitysacademic schools and programmes to meet UCDs widening participation targets.It provides a range o pre and post entry personal and academic supports ormature students, those rom socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds andstudents with a disability. The Centre provides volunteer opportunities or UCD

    students through its suite o outreach initiatives in schools and communities in theLeinster area.

    The Access Centre provides support or students withdisabilities. We support students with a variety odisabilities including physical and sensory disabilities,dyslexia, Attention Decit Hyperactivity DisorderADHD, Aspergers Syndrome, mental health issuesand signicant ongoing medical conditions includingcystic brosis and diabetes.

    CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE FUNDThe university has put in place a Childcare Subsidy Scheme to assist student

    parents most in need o nancial assistance. Each application is assessed on a caseby case basis and more inormation on this und can be ound by contacting theSU Welare Ocer, Student Adviser or Chaplain. All expenditure through this undis subject to strict eligibility guidelines and there is no guarantee that any studentwill receive a subsidy. Successul applicants will have to submit monthly crche/child-minder invoices. This is an ESF unded scheme.

    OTHER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThere are many dierent scholarships, awarded or academic achievement,available across the University. The Student Assistance Scheme, the ChildcareSubsidy and the Welare Fund are dierent ways that nancial aid reachesstudents.     The Student Health Service provides on-campus medical and psychiatric careto registered UCD students. The service is provided with an ethos o respect,courtesy and integrity, and operates to the highest proessional standards.

    The service is envisaged as an addition to the students own amily doctor orspecialist medical services. It operates within resource constraints so certainservice limitations apply.     Mumps InormationThere have been signicant outbreaks o mumps in Third Level Collegesthroughout Ireland.Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes ever, headache and painul swollen

    glands as well as serious complications. It is spread rom person to personby coughs and sneezes. It can also be transmitted by direct contact throughsaliva.

    Your risk o contracting mumps is signicantly reduced by vaccination. Youneed two doses o the MMR vaccine to maximize your protection. I you havenot received the vaccine or both doses, or are unsure, please have the MMRvaccine rom your GP prior to coming to college. I you havent had yourvaccine beore coming to university you can alternatively arrange to have the

    The UCD Student Counselling Service is committed to supporting positive studentmental health and well-being. Its aim is to provide easily accessible supportor students when personal issues arise that aect their happiness, well-being,capacity to cope, relationships or learning.

    Just as in any group o people, students can encounter diculties, particularlyin the transition rom school to college or at pressure times during college

    years. Diculties can range rom minor concerns and stresses to major liecrises. Although in many cases students may nd ways to deal with these issuesthemselves or with the support o riends and amily, there are times when it isbenecial to seek proessional help. Counselling oers students the opportunity toget this proessional help, to think about new ways o addressing diculties and to

    be supported while doing so.

    The ServiceThe Student Counselling Service is a condential, individual counselling serviceto students o the university. The Service is located upstairs in the StudentCentre. At the rst meeting between a student and a counsellor, the counsellorwill explain how the service works and answer any questions that a student mayhave. Consultations typically last up to 50 minutes and students attend weekly,

    ortnightly or at less requent intervals depending on the students needs. Studentsusually attend or between 1-6 appointments.

    StaThe service is resourced by clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists andcounsellors.

    Due or completion by the Spring 2012, the new Student Centre will revolutionisestudent lie in UCD. In a single step, UCD will jump to the top o the league o Irishuniversities or on-campus, quality student acilities.

    At the centre o the new building will be an Olympic standard, 50 metre swimmingpool with movable foors to allow experienced and learner swimmers the chanceto use the acility. The student centre will also eature a brand new gymnasium,dance studio and spinning classroom, all o which will be available to students.Ater your workout you can wind down in the sauna or the jacuzzi.

    I you just want to relax without the workout, there will be a state o the art3D cinema, screening the latest blockbusters as well as lm classics and moviemarathons. In addition to the cinema, there will be a brand new drama theatreand debating chamber as well as new acilities or the over 100 clubs and societies.

    UCDs large student media, which includes newspapers as well as a television andradio station, will also be housed within the building.

    Once built, the new Student Centre will represent a massive expansion in therange o medical acilities available to UCDs student population.     OnCampus AccommodationUCDs on-campus accommodation oers a number o accommodation optionsto students on both the Beleld and Blackrock campuses. Comprising oaccommodation or over 2,700 students, the residences vary rom traditionalHalls o Residence style accommodation with shared kitchen and dining acilitiesto catered accommodation and sel- catering apartments or up to six students.Facilities also include a gym, printing acility and a Res Lie program to buildcommunity spirit within the residence.

    Bookings or on-campus accommodation are made throughout the summermonths starting on the 8th June 2011, with residential licenses commencing on the5th September 2011. While most students only require accommodation until theend o the summer examination period, there is also an option available to remain

    on campus throughout the summer months. This is ideally suited to graduatestudents writing dissertations.

    ResidencesThe Residences centre around the southern side o the Beleld campus and on theBlackrock campus. Each Residence location has a Reception Oce. The centraloce in Merville is open Monday to Friday 08.00-14.00 and at key times duringthe weekends. In other locations the reception oces are open each weekday and

    Alongside your leisure activities being catered or, your student rights and day-to-day welare are taken care o by The Students Union. Elected rom among thestudent body, The Students Union represents students opinions and addressesthe problems and concerns that students ace both on an individual and a groupbasis, rom unplanned pregnancy to late grant distribution. Services oered bythe Union include the shops, bars and the pool hall known as The Trap. They alsoorganise regular live music perormances in the Student Club along with variousother events during the year.

    UCD Sport oers all UCD students the opportunity to use the sports acilities asan individual or as part o a group. UCD students can join any o the sports clubsranging rom Archery to GAA to Ultimate Frisbee. All sports clubs cater or alllevels and abilities. Alternatively, i you are interested in participating in tnessclasses or health and exercise programmes, UCD students can choose to pay-as-

    Societies are an exciting eature o lie at UCD. There are more than 100 o them,covering everything rom debating and creative writing to juggling and dancing-and even beyond! Dont miss out on the opportunity to get involved duringFreshers Week and join as many societies as you can or no more than 2 each ormembership. There is guaranteed to be something or everyone!

    Freshers Week: 19th 23rd September 2011You get the time to join societies during Freshers Week, which takes place inthe second week o term rom 19th - 23rd September. Each society will have astand in the Freshers Pavilion, which is located beside the Student Centre orthe week. Societies can also be joined ater Freshers Week, with most takingmembership anytime during the year, or more specically during RereshersDay, which takes place at the start o Semester 2.

    During Freshers Week, there will be a range o activities run by all the societies,which are advertised on posters around campus. Many societies also oerspecic events or Freshers and new members, to give you the opportunity tomeet up with other people who have newly joined. You should try to join thesociety that represents your school or course, as well as other societies thatoer events and activities that you nd interesting. Its important to move

    outside your comort zone a little bit to enjoy new opportunities. Societies arean ideal way to meet new riends and get involved in student lie.

    the society activities that youll nd going on regularly:

    DramSoc has two plays on each week and allows student writers, directorsand actors fex their creative muscles.

    UCDs two largest debating societies, the Literary and Historical Societyand the Law Society both have lunchtime and evening debates each weekas well as other events.
