In 1996, Saint Francis was founded with the dream of providing service dogs to people with disabilities. This year Saint Francis Service Dogs celebrates 20 years of helping people to better experience the world through partnership with a service dog. We have come a long way since 1996...

* Saint Francis placed its first service dog in 1998.

Today, Saint Francis has placed over 125 service dogs with children and adults with disabilities, and supports 60 service dog teams presently working together. With 52 puppies and dogs in the training program, Saint Francis places 10-15 dogs each year.

* Initially, Saint Francis relied entirely on volunteers

and had no home. Today, Saint Francis has 14 employees and a state-of-the-art kennel facility on an 18-acre campus. The kennel facility can house 12 dogs in advanced training while also providing offices, grooming, and isolation kennel space.

The Prison Pup Program began in 2002 at Bland Correctional Center. Now there are 26 inmate handlers with 26 puppies in the program.

* Saint Francis has expanded its service area. In

addition to serving Virginia, we also serve a 300 mile radius of Roanoke, which includes portions of North Carolina and West Virginia.

* Saint Francis Saint Francis earned accreditation with

Assistance Dogs International (ADI) in 2007 and again in 2012. Saint Francis was the first service dog organization in Virginia to achieve this distinction.

Saint Francis saw a need for service dogs for children with autism, and created a solution to accommodate those children.

Saint Francis saw the demand for service dogs for injured veterans, and created a program to support our nation’s heroes.

Saint Francis discovered a unique way in which Facility dogs could support many children and adults, and established a Facility Dog Program. Our Facility Dog Program began in a rehabilitation facility and has expanded to schools for children with learning disabilities, in courtrooms and in child advocacy programs.

Why does all of this matter? Because of the profound way in which a Saint Francis Service Dog changes lives. Some of our partners have said the following:

“Saint Francis has allowed me to see that miracles can start with a dream, pad quietly into one’s life on four paws, begin in a prison

cell, spring from the hearts of volunteers and be seen in the eyes of recipients.”

—Carol Willoughby, co-founder of Saint Francis

“Every parent’s dream for their child is that each stepping stone in life is safe and gentle.

Because of all the loving, patient, kind and generous people who work in all aspects of Saint Francis, my hopes and dreams

for my son’s future are expanding.” — Mother of a child with a Saint Francis Service Dog

“For the first time in my life, I feel I have a real purpose and role in society.” — Partner

“He is the reason I am still alive.” —Partner

As we recognize our achievements over the past 20 years, we know we have a lot more to do. We thank you for your volunteerism and for your donations. We would not have been able to accomplish all that we have without your support.

There are many children and adults waiting for a service dog. Saint Francis operates without a revenue stream, insurance reimbursements or government funds. We rely on your philanthropy to continue our growth. As we look forward, we ask that if you are moved by what we do, please continue to support our mission.

Thank you!

Charitable Giving

The PATH act allows taxpayers who are age 70 1/2 or older to make contributions from their IRA to qualified charitable organizations. The amounts aren’t deemed taxable income and can be used to satisfy an IRA owner’s required mini-mum distribution (RMD).

To take advantage of the exclusion, you will need to arrange a direct transfer by the IRA trustee to a charity by December 31. Consult your tax advisor for more information.

The examples are for illustration purposes only, and assume Married Filing Joint status with no other income items other than the Required Minimum Distribution from the IRA and

no other itemized deductions. Please consult your tax advisor to determine the impact on your personal tax return.
