What is a SFP Module?

• The small form-factor pluggable (SFP) is a compact, hot-pluggable network interface module used for both telecommunication and data communications applications.

• These SFP Transceiver modules NV-GLC-SX-MMD, NV-GLC-LH-SMD, NV-GLC-EX-SMD, NV-SFP-RJ45, and the NV-SFP-10G-SR-LC are hot-pluggable devices and therefore there is no need to power down the Switch when installing or removing these modules.

• SFP+ - SFP+ is an updated version that supports higher speeds up to 10Gbps.

When to recommend?• If the customer is running only Ethernet cable for our Flex-10G switch, then

we should recommend the NV-SFP-RJ45.• For a max bandwidth of 10Gb/s on our Flex-10G, the

NV-SFP-10G-SR-LC should be recommended.• For Fiber cabling of speed up to 1Gb/s, any of the below can be

recommended based on the distance and the mode – Single/Multi.• NV-GLC-SX-MMD, NV-GLC-LH-SMD, NV-GLC-EX-SMD• NVT Phybridge modules should be positioned whenever possible as they

are fully tested and compatible with our products. Third party modules should work just fine, but we KNOW these 100% work without an issue.

MMF vs SMF

• MMF - Multi-mode optical fiber is a type of optical fiber mostly used for communication over short distances, such as within a building or on a campus.

• Multi-mode fiber has a large core diameter that enables multiple light modes to be propagated and limits the maximum length of a transmission link because of modal dispersion.

• SMF - Single-mode Fiber is a type of optical fiber mostly used for communication over long distances.

• Single-mode fiber (SMF) has much tighter tolerances for optics used. The core is smaller, and the laser wavelength is narrower.

NV-GLC-SX-MMD

• Speed: 1.25 Gb/s• Wavelength: 850nm VCSEL• Distance: up to 550m on 50/125μm MMF• Operating temperature: 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F)Used in Multi-mode fiber,

where the max. distance is within 550m.

NV-GLC-LH-SMD

• Speed: 1.25 Gb/s• Wavelength: 1310nm FP• Distance: up to 20km on 9/125μm SMF• Operating temperature: 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F)Used in Single-mode fiber, has a reach of around 20km.

NV-GLC-EX-SMD

• Speed: 1.25 Gb/s• Wavelength: 1310nm DFB• Distance: up to 40km on 9/125μm SMF• Operating temperature: 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F)Used in Single-mode fiber, has a reach of around 40km

NV-SFP-RJ45

• Speed: 1.25 Gb/s• Rate category: 10/100/1000 Base• Distance: up to 100m• Operating temperature: 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F)

Page 9: SFP Modules Training - NVT Phybridge

NV-SFP-10G-SR-LC• Speed: 10 Gb/s• Wavelength: 850nm DFB• Distance: up to 300m on 50/125μm MMF• Operating temperature: 0°C to 70°C (32°F to 158°F).

Used in Multi-mode fiber, where the max. distance is within 300m.

This is a SFP+ module and is compatible only with our FLEX-10G (as other chariot switches do not support 10Gb/s).

Electrostatic Discharge Sensitivity (ESD)

• The SFP Transceivers are ESD sensitive devices. Always use an ESD wrist strap when installing these devices.

• Only trained, qualified service personnel shall install or maintain these devices.
