a remote site is added. The power consumption has been reduced
by 40%. The solution has resulted in a scalable, cost effective,

The Outcome
Commend UK, a leading Integrated Intercom solutions provider, has
been chosen by Northumbrian Water Group (comprising Northumbrian
Water and Essex & Suffolk Water) to provide a cost effective, highly
scalable, networked security intercom solution that linked their
remote sites to their central operating points in Durham, Sunderland,
Teesside and Hanningfield in Essex. Some of the remote sites had to
have local disaster recovery in case of a network failure as 365, 24/7
operation is required. All this had to be achieved as well as reducing
their total cost of ownership and ensuring a future proof solution was
installed.

Northumbrian Water Group operates in the north east of England,
where it trades as Northumbrian Water, and in the south east of
England, where it trades as Essex & Suffolk Water.
Northumbrian Water provides water and sewerage services to
2.7 million people in the north east of England with an operating area
of 9,422 km2 through 16,965 km of mains and 29,724 km of sewers.
The major population centres of Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside are
their main area but Northumbrian Water also serve large rural areas
in Northumberland and County Durham (provision of waste water
services only in Hartlepool).
Essex & Suffolk Water provides water services to 1.8 million people
with an operating area of 2,892 km2 through 8,580 km of mains.
The Solution Short Profile of NWGCommend UK along with 2020 Vision Technology designed a solution
based around Northumbrian Water Groups existing virtual environment.
By installing a single Commend VirtuoSIS Software Server on their
VMware infrastructure at the central NWG Headquarters it gave them
the capacity for 25,000 networked subscribers.
The intercoms on the remote sites were programmed to feed back
to the VirtuoSIS which in turn negated the need for remote hardware
servers on the local site. Disaster recovery was built in to high priority
remote sites by way of a small IP server that gives the remote sites
local control in case of a network failure.
Disaster recovery is automatically built into the VirtuoSIS at the
headquarters by utilising the high availability that VMware offers. This
also ensures that live backups are constantly taken and you have the
ability to work on the server with no down time.
