As I mentioned in my note to open the school year, Seward High School is working with Education Elements on a process for increasing opportunities for Personalized Learning at Seward High. I’m very proud of all of the different ways we leverage technology and our relationships with students and their parents to create unique and individualized supports and challenges for students as they work towards their graduation and beyond. I’m also quite proud of the ways teachers adjust to meet the needs of the students they serve. The staff will be moving from the “Discovery Phase,” where we have been conducting professional devel-opment on personalized learning, into the “Planning Phase” during the October 20th in-service. My hope, for the results of this process, is that you and your child(ren) will recog-nize even more ways teachers work to meet the individual needs of students as we model life-long learning and continuous improvement. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns as Seward High moves into the “Planning” and “Launch” phases of Education Element’s Personalized Learning Process.

Some huge congratulations go to the boy’s and girl’s cross-country teams for their perfor-mance at the State 2017 Cross-Country Championship Meet. It’s worthy to note that this year’s boy’s team is comprised of four freshmen—Sam Koster, Neil Lindquist, Tray Ingalls, and Max Pfeiffenberger. The team is rounded out by Jaden Van Dyke, Brendan McMurray, and Zen Petrosius. The girl’s team is comprised of Emma Moore, Ruby Lindquist, Sadie Lindquist, Sophia Dow, Kalista Rodriguez, Hana Cooney, and Shiphrah Breuckner. Trapper Allen and Maranatha Breuckner were the alternates.

The Football played their last regular season game at Nikiski on Saturday, September 30th.

Both swimming and volleyball continue through mid-November. The hours of practice through these long seasons—even as they’re working hard in the classroom—is a testament to their commitment and dedication. Please take the time to congratulate our athletes on their efforts.

There are several important dates to note in October:

October 17 Seward Site-Based Council Meeting. This includes a District-Wide Budget Meeting at 6:00 PM.

October 20 End of the Quarter/In-Service (no school)

October 25 Teacher Collaboration Day (Early Release at 12:50)

Spreading the Flu

People with the flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away according to the CDC. If we have the Flu, we generally spread it by droplets when we cough, sneeze, or

talk. Droplets can land in the mouths or noses of others who are nearby or be inhaled into the lungs. We may also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus

on it and then touching our own mouth or nose.

We can infect other people 1 day before development of symptoms and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. Some never show symptoms and still spread the flu.

I would recommend prevention by getting the annual flu vaccine. Simply washing your hands with soap and water is still the number one way to prevent spread of illness. If

you do get sick, please stay home.

Seward High Art Students brought the 70’s back by creating their own black-light paintings. These original paintings followed the Fish Tank theme of this year's Music and Arts Festival and were on display there! They were painted with special neon paint that glows under a black light. Great job everyone!
