Executive Summary

Through the Business, Innovation, and Leadership signature program, students will develop a sense of

individual responsibility, learn life and career skills, gain business knowledge, creativity and the critical

thinking skills required to achieve the highest levels of personal, academic and career success.

Our future workforce will need to develop advanced technical and functional job skills. The Business,

Innovation and Leadership signature theme encompasses the recommendations of The Partnership for 21st

Century Skills (P21), a national organization of business, education and government leaders which

emphasizes the importance of teaching Life and Career Skills and Learning and Innovation Skills necessary to

prepare students for increasingly complex life and work environments. These skills include flexibility,

initiative, social and leadership skills, creativity, problem solving, communication and collaboration.

In the spring of 2010, the community proposed the Business, Innovation and Leadership signature theme in

part, due to the high concentration of Severna Park residents who are employed in the Management, Business

and Finance sector. In addition, local, state and national employment projections indicate that there will be a

high demand for occupations that will require an associates, bachelors or master’s degree in Business. The

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the two industry sectors projected to have the largest

employment growth through 2018 are the Professional and the Business Services sectors which combined,

are expected to grow at more than twice the annual average for all industries, adding 4.2 million jobs.

SPHS has a strong foundation of programs offering students opportunities to lead and learn business and innovation skills. The signature program will enhance these opportunities and provide a context for learning Business, Innovation and Leadership skills across curriculum.

Community members and K-20 education will come together to share their content area expertise and partner with school personnel to develop Business, Innovation and Leadership curriculum and opportunities for all students with a special emphasis on experiential learning including internships, capstone projects and service learning. Learning associated with risk taking, ethics, time management communication and project management is fundamental to any discipline, be it business, health care, law, performing arts or education. We are convinced that the Business, Innovation and Leadership Signature Program will not only foster ‘thinking outside the box’ but a sense of purpose and belonging that encourages a life well lived.

Mission

The mission of the Severna Park High School Signature program is to inspire business,

innovation, & leadership in all Severna Park High School students. Students will develop a

sense of individual responsibility, learn life and career skills, gain business knowledge, creativity

and the critical thinking skills required to achieve the highest levels of personal, academic and

career success. Students who take full advantage of signature program offerings will complete

high school highly qualified for both workforce and higher education experiences.

Co-Curriculars

Co-curricular activities offer a broad spectrum of learning experiences outside of the traditional

classroom for all students. They are intended to complement, broaden and provide a practical

application of the knowledge students receive in regular classes within the Business, innovation, &

Leadership theme. They provide students with meaningful, expand learning experiences, and

opportunities to grow as individuals.

DECA-A competitive business organization whereby students are given challenges in realistic business

situations then have to tap into their problem solving skills in order to present the best solution before a

judge. Three levels of competition include: County, State, & international.

Technology Student Association (TSA)- The study of STEM fields beyond the classroom give the

students the opportunity to work as a team in competitions in such areas as website design, flight

challenge, film technology, CAD, desktop publishing, extemporaneous speaking, and science

visualization.

Biology Club/Simulation to Advance Innovation & Learning (SAIL)- Students participate in solving

challenges presented to them by the SAIL Center from Anne Arundel Medical Center. Such challenges

include the creation of simulated blood and mannequin models for central line placements.

School Store- Student run business where students are in charge of selling, accounting, inventory,

scheduling, and ordering supplies.

Chick-Fil- A Leader Academy- A national high school leadership program focused on impact through

action. Chick- Fil-A Leader Academy engages students in monthly leader labs with a focus on important

leadership skills that they will use to create student-led community impact projects.

Diamond Challenge Business Idea Competition- An international business concept and social venture competition focusing on the development and validation of new business models for generating revenue and profit. In partnership with the University of Delaware, Horn Program of Entrepreneurship,

students have the ability to compete for $10,000 in cash or scholarship money. M

Coding club- Students are introduced to different types of coding including SCRATCH and Raspberry Pi to

learn how to design webpages, apps, and video games.

ACE-Architecture, Construction, & Engineering- Ace club members work with professional architects,

engineers, and construction managers to learn field skills by participating in planning and designing

projects and attending constructions based field trips.

Screen Printing, Vinyl Cutting, & Laser Engraving Club- Students learn techniques of manufacturing,

supply chain management, inventory control, and marketing, while learning to operate a student run

business.

Signature Exploration Course The Severna Park High school signature exploration course is a broad survey of current issues within the theme of Business, innovation, & Leadership. The purpose is to contextualize learning, making connections between rigorous academic courses and workforce relevance, supporting the goal of Anne Arundel County Public schools to eliminate the gap. The course consists of 4-6 week modules that are collaboratively built with educators and partners to include current career and post-secondary opportunities. The exploration course is a foundation course which leads to the Signature pathway certificate.

Business, Innovation, & Leadership Explorations 1A Course

Rationale:

This course has been developed as an introduction and overview for students who wish to participate in Severna Park High School’s Business, Innovation, & Leadership Signature Program. In this course, students will explore components of business, innovation, and leadership through a project based approached. Students will develop a sense of individual responsibility, learn life and career skills, gain business knowledge, creativity and the critical thinking skills required to achieve the highest levels of personal, academic, and career success. This course explores the competencies as well as the workforce connections of our 21

st century globalized community.

Strategies integral to this course include the effective and ethical use of the internet and various forms of media, the ability to discuss and debate relevant topics, the ability to work collaboratively on a variety of projects and assignments, and the ability to communicate outcomes.

Program Outcomes:

By the end of the course, the student will:

Understand the social and professional opportunities provided through the Signature Program at Severna Park High School and in the wider local, national, and international community.

Participate in case studies to investigate the world beyond their immediate environment.

Gain a basic understanding of business practices, roles, and systems.

Design an “innovative strategy” or “product.”

Communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences.

Acknowledge and develop individual passion while recognizing the perspectives of others.

Understand core skills necessary to be successful in a career pathway.

Course description:

In the Business, Innovation, & Leadership Explorations 2 course, students will work collaboratively using

entrepreneurial thought and action to analyze the organization of businesses, current national and

international business policies and trends through case studies, field trips, and guest industry specialists.

They will work collaboratively in teams with a mentor from the Integrated Community Stake holder

partnership to solve an innovative project based business challenge. Students will formally present their

idea to their mentor, community stakeholders, and students.

Capstone Project:

The Explorations capstone project enables students to bring together the concepts learned in

Explorations 1A & 1B through an engaging and thought provoking challenge. Students will work in

teams to solve a business challenge presented to them by community stakeholders. They will formally

present their findings to the stakeholders which includes the completion of a business plan with global

impacts, advertising and marketing components and product prototypes.

Leadership Institute

The SPHS Leadership Institute strives to develop a positive attitude and spirit among students and to

promote high moral character, civic-mindedness, self-reliance and service for the improvement of

school and community. Members participate in leadership courses, attend seminars and take part in

service projects which prepare them to lead their own service project during their senior year. The

leadership institute can also be used to satisfy program requirements in the Business, innovation, &

Leadership Signature program.

Freshmen in good academic standing may apply to the SPHS Leadership Institute in the spring to

participate during 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Once accepted to the Institute, sophomores are required

to enroll in the first of a series of semester-long leadership courses.

With a hands on approach to leadership, students explore:

Internships

Internships improve learner achievement both academically and technically. It provides relevancy and

engaged learning and gives students the opportunity to explore multiple careers. The Signature

program works in cooperation with the Internship coordinator at Severna Park High School to monitor

senior placement and success in the workplace. Students may apply for a one credit, 135 hour,

internship placement in a selected field in their senior year. Internships may be paid or unpaid,

depending on the placement.

The Signature program partners with Anne Arundel Medical Center, The James and Sylvia Earl

Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning Center (SAIL) ,the National Oceanic & Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA) and AOL Advertising to provide students with unique hands on workplace

experience. The SAIL center is dedicated to the advancement and practice of medicine through research,

training and innovation designed to improve surgical and medical procedures and outcomes for patients.

NOAA’s division of National Marine Sanctuaries provides students with unique opportunities in

environmental, green business, and Government studies. AOL seeks to simplify the internet for

consumers and creators by unleashing the world’s best builders of culture and code.

The Severna Park High School signature program collects quantitative and qualitative yearly data to

ensure continuous program improvement and state of the art curriculum that addresses changing

student and future workplace needs. Data is collected on class enrollment, participation of field trips,

Integrated Community Stakeholder’s Team

The purpose of the ICST is to work collaboratively with the school to address county goals and objectives for academic achievement and college and career readiness for all students by creating unique opportunities for students through the Signature program. After selecting the theme, the ICST works with the school to determine needs, timeline and budget, program elements, outcomes, resources, curricula and creates a detailed Signature Program plan. In partnership with school personnel, the ICST will remain involved with the sustainability of the Signature Program. The ICST is made up of individuals from six community sectors, including, business/industry, health, education, community services, media and communication, and government. The school based team provides guidance and support to the Signature program through the curriculum

and instruction platform. The team is comprised of teachers and administration representing each

department in the school. The team meets once a month to plan advisories, review overlays, support

signature related themes, determine school- wide signature needs and ensure a whole-school

implementation process.

The Severna Park High School’s Signature program was launched in 2011 and has continued to grow.

Currently, there are two explorations courses developed as well as overlays, guest speakers, field trips,

and co-curriculars. The sustainability of the program depends on the continual engagement of ICST

build self-sustaining and replicable strategies for the signature process. The continued success of the

program depends upon:

Overlays:

Overlays are points in the curriculum that make connections between academic content and workforce

relevance. Classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and experts in the field become partners to

create the overlays. Business, industry, and community partners determine the topics that are currently

important in their field which bring relevance to the content. Teachers and curriculum specialists then

Severna Park High School Students Win First Place at the University of

Delaware’s Horn Program in Entrepreneurship Diamond Challenge

International Business Concept Competition.

Congratulations to Gabriel Werner and Nathan Wagener for winning the Diamond Challenge business

concept competition on April 15, 2016. Their invention is an air pump that uses new technology to store

the needle. The students conceived their idea through the Project Lead The Way Engineering program.

They further developed it through DECA and the Business, Innovation, & Leadership Signature

Entrepreneur club.

The Diamond Challenge is a venture concept competition for high school students and young

entrepreneurs centered on building businesses or social ventures. The business concept

competition focuses on the development and validation of new business models for generating revenue

and profit. The students competed against 1000+ high school students from 22 countries and 17 states.

As first place winners, the students received a total award of $10,000. This includes the semifinalist

award and travel subsidy as well as a $1,000 grant award to the team’s school. The students also

received an additional $1,000 tuition award and the opportunity to further develop their business in a

startup incubator called Catapult.
