CREATED IN 1928 BY DEDICATED ARTISTS OF STATURE FOR THE PROTECTION OFARTISTS) INTERESTS) AND TRADITIONAL REALISM IN AMERICAN ART.

THE AMERICAN ARTISTSPROFESSIONAL LEAGUE

In January 1928) F. Ballard Williams) AssistantTreasurer of the National Academy of Design in NewYork) called a meeting of fifteen members of theSalmagundi Club. The purpose: to discuss the need fora national organization to meet the increasing interestsin traditional realism in American art Most attendingwere prominent academicians of their day. Theattendees all agreed that an organization designed toprotect artists' interests and promote traditionalAmerican art was necessary and The American ArtistsProfessional League (AAPL) was bom.

The AAPL first focused on the issue of obtainingcommissions of official portraits for American Artists.By using its national stature) the AAPL influenced arider to a Congressional Bill stipulating that all officialportraits paid for with taxpayers) dollars were to bepainted by American artists) a fact that remains ineffect to this day.

Another milestone for the organization was theimprovement of the chemical and physical purity ofartists) pigments. By securing a fund from the CarnegieCorporation Endowment Fund) a program of colorpigment research was established for the AAPL It wascompleted in 1932) making the AAPL the country)sleading authority on artists) pigments at that time. TheAAPL was also instrumental in establishing andsecuring the U.S. Bureau of Standards original set ofgovernment~sponsored standards for artists) colors)updated in 1962.

In its ongoing effort to promote and encourage artistsspecializing in realistic art forms) the AAPL has staged aGrand National Einibition for over 70 years+ Each year)hundreds of applicants from all 50 states in all mediasubmit their work for review by a selection committeeconsisting of professional artists in the fields of oil)watermedia) pastel and graphics and sculpture.

By Board resolution in 1958) the AAPL created theAmerican Artists Fund, an arm of the organizationspecifically designed for educational and charitablepurposes. Through private and corporate donations andcontributions to the Fund, the AAPL sponsors its GrandNational Exhibition and awards scholarships to collegelevel students studying American art. This year) theAAPL will award over $10)000 in prizes to exhibitorsand has marked $2,000 for college scholarships.
