OUR PASTOR ’S PAGE
The Call to Christian Perfection
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Nobody is perfect, right? Some of us may be “perfectionists,” but all of us realize that we are far from perfect. However, at the end of the gospel reading this Sunday, Jesus tells us, “So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). How could our Lord possibly be asking us to be something that is impossible? Only God is perfect, right? It is important to understand Jesus’ command in light of the Old Covenant. Being perfect does not mean being without defect; it means that our moral righteousness must surpass that of the Mosaic Law. In the first reading from today, we hear “Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). Jesus is taking this com-mand to a whole new level: Our measure of holiness, our measure of perfection, must be measured against God’s infinite holiness and infinite perfection. Jesus gives us three ways of how to concrete-ly live out this perfection: Do not retaliate when injured; go “the extra mile” in our work; and love our enemies.
Let us look first at how to go “above and beyond” the call of duty. At our jobs (and even in our volunteer work), we sometimes have to do things we do not like. Yet, when we do these things joy-fully, we are perfecting our work — we find meaning in it and we do it for God. It is also a great wit-ness to others of how Jesus makes all the difference – even at work. However, the two other teach-ings in today’s gospel are not as easy to live concretely. Firstly, Jesus is not preaching passivism! When He says to not retaliate, He is not saying we should not defend ourselves. The Church has always taught that it is just to defend ourselves as long as we do not inflict disproportionate damage. Rather, He is telling us that when our reputation is attacked, we do not stoop to that level of nasti-ness. All of us here at some point have probably been the object of gossip, detraction, or misunder-standing. It is painful, but as our parents tell us growing up: “‘Two wrongs’ don’t make a ‘right.’” Therefore, we turn the other cheek, and we pray for those who hurt us.
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Notice: Our Lord does not say “‘enemy is a bad word.” He says to love our enemies, which means He knows we all have them. There are people in all of our lives that we cannot stand. We do not have to “hang out” with them or drink beer with them, but we have to love them. This is what makes the Christian different from eve-rybody else. As children of our heavenly Father, we actually love those who hate us. It is to be per-fect like God, because He loves even those who hate Him. We cannot do it alone, though; we need His grace. That is why we pray, and that is why we go to Mass.
P.S. Today is Commitment Weekend across the Diocese of Tyler. If you have not already re-
turned your pledge or gift please do so today. Every gift is important and we thank you in ad-
vance for your generous support to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Lowry

Pr. Lowry

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of
God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
