Over the last few weeks many countries and some states here in the USA have opened their churches for public Mass-es. Here in Massachusetts, this past Monday, May 18th, Governor Baker outlined his four phases to lift re-strictions and open up our economy. Houses of worship were included in Phase I and were allowed to open for services as of this past Monday, May 18th. That same day, Bishop McManus decreed that our churches would reopen on Saturday, May 23rd for public Masses. Over the last couple of months, we leaned heavily on the ability to live stream our daily and Sunday Masses, as well as the Sta-tions of the Cross during Lent, our holy hour each Thursday, and special prayers and even a series of instruction. It has been help-ful while we are isolated to still connect through the encouraging comments on Facebook, the notes we receive in the mail, or peo-ple’s kind words when passing through the parking lot for palms, roses for Mothers’ Day or a weekly confession. It seems obvious to us that going forward we need to continue to provide this ser-vice and the ability to connect through the media. Now that people are able to attend Mass, we recognize that some people should not, cannot, or are not comfortable at this time attending gatherings with others for Mass. So, we will continue our live streaming on our website and with Milford local access on Sunday morning. To be able to do that, we needed more than a video captured on a cellphone. We have invested in installing cameras in the upper church, a server and other equipment to continue to offer a quality transmission for our Masses. The cost is $14,000. Any financial assistance people can give with this expense would be greatly appreciated!

Parish Information

A Message from Father Peter Dear Parishioners, This past Monday, after nine weeks of social lockdown and isolation, Governor Baker announced a four phase plan to reo-pen our society and economy here in Massachusetts. Fortu-nately, he has included houses of worship in the first phase and on the same day, Bishop McManus decreed that public Masses could resume on Saturday, May 23rd. While it seems a relief that we can again attend Mass, there are new directives with familiar restrictions that we need to abide by as we move for-ward into what many are calling the ‘new normal.’ For some time, some are saying at least a year, and maybe as long as the rest of our lives, there will real changes in the way that we can worship together for the coming weeks and even months. The Governor has allowed houses of worship to hold services as long as the attendance is within forty percent (40%) of the stated capacity for the building. That means that our upper church, with a capacity of 600 people could hold 200 for a given Mass. However, since people must socially distance a minimum of six feet apart, unless they are from the same household and then can sit together and less than the six feet separation, we cannot accommodate 200 people. Therefore, all attendees will need to enter the upper church through the glass entrance by the connector and the bell tower so that we can assure the number attending is according to government guidelines. Unless there is a medical reason not to, all attend-ing are required to wear a face covering or mask while enter-ing, while inside, and exiting. Those who refuse to wear a covering may be denied entry. When entering, leaving, and for communion, all attendees are asked to be conscious to so-cially distance the required six feet. Holy water fonts need to remain dry. Processions are sus-pended, including the entrance through the congregation, the gospel, at offertory for the collection and bringing forward the gifts, and the ministers leaving the sanctuary at the end of Mass. The sign of peace is not to be shared. Social gatherings before and after services are not allowed. Child care is sus-pended as well as the Liturgy of the Word for children. It is preferred that communion be received in the hand, with your hands flat and extended. Here, in the Diocese of Worcester, communion on the tongue may not be denied, but those com-municants who choose this option are asked to wait until the end of the line to limit any risk of transmission of illness and for the safety and reassurance of others who receive in the hand. We are working to have hand sanitizing dispensers that are touch free available in the entrances of our buildings, at the center, the upper and lower church and the large hall. Most are back ordered but we found some that will be here the first week of June. All donations need to be quarantined before being counted to be safe in not transferring any illness with parish staff and volunteers; thus, making your contribution electronically on line will be a great help to all of our staff and a gesture of caring for their health and safety as well. We also need to organize the responsibility to sanitize the worship area, doorknobs and bathroom after each service. These are many challenges and we are struggling to answer them all. Please realize the most important part of all of this is to keep all of us healthy and safe. If you have a compromised medical condition, are unsure in any way, please be at peace to stay home, we will continue to live stream our Masses.

A Look Back … ‘’Cemetery Improvements’ (Part 2)

The summer of 1908 saw much activity at the cemetery as Fr. McGrath had a natural spring beyond the Round Tower and the Tomb excavated to create a second ornamental lake. For several weeks, workmen were busy digging, grading and then seeding the banks of the new lake. In an article in the Milford Daily News of September 30, 1908, Fr. McGrath explained that he was ‘anxious that the cemeteries be well kept and since his coming here has bent his energies to that end.’ In the latter part of the 20th centu-ry, this lake was removed and the ground filled in. It can be iden-tified now in the 21st century by the lack of burials in this area and that in early spring it often floods because of the underground spring that fed the lake created by Fr. McGrath and removed by subsequent leadership. The other improvement that Fr. McGrath made to the cemetery was to install a new monument for his parents’ burial place. In the original cemetery which is south of Hamilton Ave, the marker is a large Celtic cross, twelve feet in height made of Westerly granite. It stands on a pedestal of solid granite and the arms of the crossbeam are four feet in length. It is here, with his beloved par-ents, that the remains of this faithful and dedicat-ed servant of Saint Mary’s Parish rests peacefully today. However, the most remarkable achievement that Fr. McGrath realized for the cemetery is one that he never saw. In his will, he left a sum for the installation of a bronze sculpture of the Crucifixion that stands near the Round Tower. It was to be a memorial for the priests of the parish and is situated in an area that could be used as a burial ground for the priests of the parish. It would be the responsibility of his executor, Fr. Hanrahan to oversee the details of this work of art and to secure its installation. Daprato Statuary Company was founded in Chicago in 1860 by four Daprato brothers who immigrated from Braga, Italy. They became renowned for their excellent craftmanship of statuary. In 1904, they opened a branch in New York and in 1909 were designated a “Pontifical Institute of Christian Art” by Pope St. Pius X. In 1983, the descendants of the founding brothers joined forces and their company is now Daprato Rigali Studios. Their monumental work, known as “The Crucifixion Group” has two figures standing on either side of our Lord crucified. The

cross stands twelve feet above its pedestal and there are two fig-ures, each five feet in height, on either side of the cross, these are

depictions of Our Lady and the Beloved Disciple, Saint John. There is a third figure, generally understood to be Mary Magda-

lene, who is kneeling at the base of the cross. The sculpture is crafted of Orbronze, a combination of superior metals with a highly perfected copper surface, oxidized and finished to give it a

permanent finished bronze appearance; this makes the piece non-rusting, non-corrosive

and weather proof. Standing on a pedestal of Milford pink granite with the names of the

former pastors of Saint Mary’s Parish, it is a work of beauty that endures and inspires even to our own day. Nearly a century after its

installation, it has little evidence of the ele-ments it has withstood these hundred years of

New England snow, rain, and wind.

May 24, 2020 1st Reading New Testament: Acts of the Apostles 81:12-14 (59A)

2nd Reading New Testament:: 1 Peter 4:13-16 Gospel: John 17:1-11a

Our meditation: "I am praying for them…” (John 17:9) Our response: Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foun-dation of Stewardship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and family and for those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give praise, to thank, and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants you to do with the gifts He has given you.

Live Streaming Camera Fund

The success of our live streaming has encouraged us to investi-gate the ability to continue this ability even when this emergency is over. Streaming from a small chapel with a handful of people is a simpler task that trying to transmit from a much larger space like the upper church with people attending Mass. We learned during Holy Week that the lighting, sound, & particulars of streaming from the upper church are complicated. To install 2 permanent cameras to live stream from our church costs $14,000. “Zoom Chat”

This Week at Home

Monday, May 25: Fill Us Although Jesus’ disciples think they understand him, Jesus insists that their understanding is incomplete: during his passion, they will abandon him. Only with the gift of the Holy Spirit will they find the courage to stay faithful. By contrast, Paul encounters men who have not heard of the Holy Spirit but who are well prepared to receive this gift. We need both the Spirit and the formation of our faith community to guide us forward. Pray for the Spirit to fill you and your faith community. Today’s Readings: Acts 19:1–8; Psalm 68:2–3ab,

4–5acd, 6–7ab; John 16:29–33.

Tuesday, May 26: Imitators

There are similarities between Paul’s journey to Jerusalem and Jesus’ preparations for his passion. In John’s account of the Gospel, Jesus gives a long farewell discourse in which he talks with his disciples about all that is going to happen. Paul also makes a formal farewell before facing the hard-ships that await him. As he says goodbye, Paul urges his listeners to imi-tate Jesus just as he has. Hear more of Paul’s heartfelt words by reading all or part of his letter to the Philippians. Today’s Readings: Acts 20:17–27; Psalm

68:10–11, 20–21; John 17:1–11a.

Wednesday, May 27: Set Apart

In the Gospel passage, the word world refers to all that opposes God. As Jesus continues his prayer to the Father, he speaks about how his follow-ers are set apart from the world. He prays that God will further consecrate or sanctify them to continue his work of sharing the truth of God’s love. Paul also was set apart for God’s work, and he reminded others to remain steadfast in holiness. In what concrete ways can you set yourself apart from the world? Today’s Readings: Acts 20:28–38; Psalm 68:29–30, 33–35a, 35bc–

36ab; John 17:11b–19.

Thursday, May 28: That All May Be One

Religion, sadly, often divides people instead of uniting them. The Pharisees and Sadducees disagreed on whether there was any kind of afterlife. Disa-greements about beliefs and practices persist among Christians today. Such division compels us to bow our heads and echo Jesus’ prayer for unity. Acts 22:30; 23:6–11; Psalm 16:1–2a and 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11; John 17:20–26.

Friday, May 29: In the Hands of Others

In Luke’s Gospel account, Jesus tells his disciples that they will be handed over to kings and governors (21:12–13). In the passage from Acts, Paul is in the hands of the local governor who consults on his case with the king. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus tells Peter that one day Peter will be arrest-ed and crucified. Centuries later, Christians still come into conflict with those in authority. Pray for those who are attacked or imprisoned because of their faith. Acts 25:13b–21; Psalm 103:1–2, 11–12, 19–20ab; John 21:15–19.

Saturday, May 30: The Work Continues

As we near the end of our Easter season, we hear the conclusions to the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel according to John. Paul has arrived at Rome, in fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy that his followers would be his wit-nesses throughout the world. Today Christian missionaries have crossed oceans to enter new regions and share the story of salvation. John’s Gos-pel notes that Jesus said and did far more than any book could contain. The Jesus who has risen, ascended to his Father, and filled us with his Spirit continues his mission through us. May the good work we do in Jesus’ name fill more volumes than could ever be written. Today’s Readings: Acts

28:16–20, 30–31; Psalm 11:4, 5 and 7; John 21:20–25.

Jesus says, “I pray for them.” The following are suggestions from parents on how to help chil-

dren learn to pray and encourage them to pray regularly. As Jesus prays for us, his disciples, in this Sunday’s gospel, he teaches us the

importance of praying every day.

Extra! Extra! Pray All About It! To help older children pray for what’s happening in the world, we discuss one or two news stories a week and pray for the leaders who must respond. We ask God to bless those in power and guide them as they make these important decisions.

—Sara Kennedy

Prayer Calendar Every month, each member of our family secretly prayed for a friend, neighbor or relative. We wrote the names of these people on the bottom of our calendar. I added daily checkboxes for each of us to mark when we prayed for them. Not only did my children want to check off the boxes, but they also anted everyone to succeed, so they would give reminders and offer to pray with another family member.

—Rebecca Manderson

Praying an Adverb My 9-year-old son didn’t like to sit at his desk and study for a concentrated period of time. So I suggested he ask God for help with his schoolwork. Since he was studying grammar, I told him to pray using an adverb, tying the concept to what he was learning. He knew what I meant. He prayed, “Help me to do my work willingly and calm-ly.” This strategy helped him whenever he needed to focus on a task.

—Alice Burnett

At Your Fingertips I wanted to help my preschool-aged boys learn how to pray for the leaders of our country, so I taught them to use fingers to remember specific prayer items.

• Thumb: Pray for our country.

• Pointer: Pray for our nation’s government.

• long finger: Pray for our president and vice-president.

• Ring finger: Pray for those who serve in our military.

• Pinkie: Pray for local community leaders.

—Kala Carlson

School-List Prayers Using a school list, we write the names of our kids’ teachers and classmates on separate note cards. Every night we draw a name and pray together for that person. We also pray that our kids will find a way to encourage that person the next day at school. If they are successful, they tell us what they did that night at dinner.

—Jennifer Wendel

Bark for Prayer We never expected that adding a puppy to our family of eight would introduce an active way to pray. Now as we walk our dog each day, we often encounter other dogs, and whenever we do, we say a prayer for the dog owners. Our “bark-for-prayer” walks have given us a new way to connect with God and our neighbors.

Did You Know? Learn to “Stop” Inappropriate Activity Before It Happens Child safety tip: Teach your child to respect the word “stop!” Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body. Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and par-ents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to be tickled or hugged anymore. Reinforcing this excellent lesson gives your child the power to recognize—and to stop—“bad touching” by others if it should happen. For particular help, you may call: Worcester Diocese, Office for Healing and Prevention at (508) 929-4363 Source: “Know the Rules . . . Partners in Charity

2020

It has been a few weeks since our weekend in-pew appeal for the 2020 Partners In Charity. Thank you to those who made a gift and a

special thank you for those who gave for the first time. Your gift will help us in reaching our parish goal. To date 162 parish households have responded to bring us to $45,379, MORE THAN 60% towards our goal of $75,000. Though we are not able to worship together, the need that this appeal satisfies continues and even increases during this pandemic. So, we need the support of all members of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish. If you have not yet completed your pledge, please prayerfully make your pledge and return it to the Church office, or make your gift on line www.partners-charity.net. Please consider a pledge that allows us to count on your generosity knowing that you can delay actual payment until af-ter this crisis. Or you can make it with a credit card. Some companies also will match employee gifts.

A Prayer in Time of Pandemic

O God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation, hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters and deliver us from this time of trial. Open our ears and our hearts to the voice of your Son: Be not afraid, for I am with you always. Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants; give us the wisdom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress and confident in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer to St. Michael Saint Michael, the Archangel defend us in battle, be our protection against the wick-edness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls, Amen.

God is watching over you. I know because I asked Him to!
