THE Directors of the Post-Graduate H ospital and Babies middotWards in presenting their Annual Report inform their

friends and the public that more patients have been under their care than in a ny year since the establi shment of these Institushytions 842 house patients have been treated of these 286 were babies and 556 adults 13007 patients have been treated in the Dispensary where 4379T visi ts have been made The District Physician of the Dispensary Dr J C Smith has attended 413 patients at their homes

The Directors earnestly appeal to the people of New York in behalf of this g reat charity Babies children women and men here receive skilled med ical and surgical care and a large class of practicioners of medicine by watching the details of this treatment a re made mu ch more competent for thei r work

Seven years ago the Directors of the New York PostshyGraduate Hospital assisted by several charitable ladies estabshylished a Babies Ward This Institution the first in the city of New York to provide especial care by themselves for infants is now enlarged to such an extent that the whole house adjacen t to the Post-Graduate Hospital is used for its purposes Many of the beds in the Babies Wards a re endowed if this were do ne for all of them much more good would be accomplished

The A uxilia ry Committee appointed by the Executive Committee of the Boa rd of Directors whose nam es a re found on page 3 of this R eport have rendered invaluable assistance to the Directors during the year

The Babies Wards have again been much improved by changes in the Sunbeam Vmiddotlard a t the top of the building

~middotTh e Auxil iary Committee of th e Board of Directors will publish a detailed account of the work of the Babies Nnrds similar to the oll e issued last winter at a later elate

A fund of $ [ 800 towards the establishment of a new building was raised during the last summer from an exhibition of tableaux at Newport besides othe r work which is noted in the Treasurers Report

The work of these wards is conducted on a broad basis hav ing a three-fold object

FIRST- The proper Medical and Surg ical care of the little waifs who are sent from all parts of the city for treatment Among the many hospitals and charities of New York there has been almost no provision made for the ca re of sick and needy infa nts The general hospitals decline to receive them a nd ma ny lives are sacrificed because poor women in tenement houses are so frequently unable to g ive their infants suitable nourishment and medical treatment during illness The Wards we re kept open throug hout the whole of the past summer and during July and August a number of infants were middotsent to the Convalescent Home a t Summit N J Tickets of admisshysion were distributed among the summer corps of physicians of the Board of Health a nd of the Child rens Aid Socie ty This has ilwolved a large ou tlay on the part of the H ospital but it is believed that much good was thereby accomplished No cases except contagious diseases a re refused save for want of room Admission can be had at any hour of the day or night

SECOND-The iTards are utilized for the higher education of physicians in this important and neglected branch During the past year between four and five hundred physicians from all parts of the United States a nd Canada have taken Courses at the New York Post-Graduate Medical School they have been here enabled to watch all the phases of infan til e disease and learn the newes t methods of t reatment These Wards are thus helpi ng to treat sick infants in many sparsely settl ed region s of the SOL th and 1 est

THIRD-The nurses from the Post-Graduate Training School are given special training in the care of sick infants which will enable them to do useful service in this special branch after graduation

Particular attention is called to the Orthopcedic Ward for Children Perhaps the effect of surgical treatment and good nursin

b O are never better seen than in such a ward as this This

is under the care of Professor A M Phelps and it forms one of the most pleasing charities in the city deformed and helpless children are relieved of suffering improved in appearshyance and made able to make their way in life The ward was form erly occupied by the Babies Ward but it has been specially fitted up as a childrens Orthopcedic Ward It is a large and sunny room where the little sufferers receive the best of care Miss Ellen Brown Miss L Waydell Miss J Earle Miss Fountain Miss Shearer Mrs Hallock Miss Mott Miss Lewis Miss M Earle Mrs Cannon Miss J E Larremore Miss Morrison Miss M Bennett and Miss Livingston of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church have acted as an influential Auxiliary Committee to the Orthopcedic Ward They have raised considerable sums of money) and have rendered invaluable seryice by their visits and attendance to the wants of the little children of this interesting Ward

The Womans Ward is also one worthy of special considerashytion the most serious surgical operations are here performed by eminent surgeons Facilities for treating poor women in the city of N ew York for serious surgical diseases are still very limited much more ought to be done than is done We have but one endowed bed in the Womans Ward we ought to have many more for many of our patients are not even able to pay the small sum necessary for their board which is fixed at a nominal price The Directors

repeat their urg ent desire to endow every bed in their H osshypital so that non e but actually poor people may be treated here It may be convenient for people with limited means to be treated in a hospital but the most deserving class a re really those who have nothing who cannot even pay the cost of feedshying them who are literally in the highways and hedges of life

Through the generosity of Mrs C P Huntington the directors have just added a Lying-In service at No 543 East 13th Street to the other facilities of the Hospital under the cha rge o f Professor von Ramdohr where poor women can be ca red for in their homes without charge

Two hundred dolla rs ($200) will endow a bed in the Babies vVard for a year Three thou sand dolla rs ($3000) on e in pershypetu ~ ty Three hundred dolla rs ($300) will endow a bed in the ~Tomans Ward for a yea r or in any other ward in the Hospital a nd three thousand dollars ($3000) one in perpetuity

The directors find their buildings so inadequate for their rapidly increa sing work that if sufficient enco urag ement be given they i~tend to greatl y improve and enlarge their facilities a t a very early date and they earnestly appeal to the citizens of New York for aid to carry o n their Hospital in a proper ma nner

FIRST- The proper Medical and Surg ical care of the little waifs who are sent from all parts of the city for treatment Among the many hospitals and charities of New York there has been almost no provision made for the ca re of sick and needy infa nts The general hospitals decline to receive them a nd ma ny lives are sacrificed because poor women in tenement houses are so frequently unable to g ive their infants suitable nourishment and medical treatment during illness The Wards we re kept open throug hout the whole of the past summer and during July and August a number of infants were middotsent to the Convalescent Home a t Summit N J Tickets of admisshysion were distributed among the summer corps of physicians of the Board of Health a nd of the Child rens Aid Socie ty This has ilwolved a large ou tlay on the part of the H ospital but it is believed that much good was thereby accomplished No cases except contagious diseases a re refused save for want of room Admission can be had at any hour of the day or night

is under the care of Professor A M Phelps and it forms one of the most pleasing charities in the city deformed and helpless children are relieved of suffering improved in appearshyance and made able to make their way in life The ward was form erly occupied by the Babies Ward but it has been specially fitted up as a childrens Orthopcedic Ward It is a large and sunny room where the little sufferers receive the best of care Miss Ellen Brown Miss L Waydell Miss J Earle Miss Fountain Miss Shearer Mrs Hallock Miss Mott Miss Lewis Miss M Earle Mrs Cannon Miss J E Larremore Miss Morrison Miss M Bennett and Miss Livingston of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church have acted as an influential Auxiliary Committee to the Orthopcedic Ward They have raised considerable sums of money) and have rendered invaluable seryice by their visits and attendance to the wants of the little children of this interesting Ward

The Womans Ward is also one worthy of special considerashytion the most serious surgical operations are here performed by eminent surgeons Facilities for treating poor women in the city of N ew York for serious surgical diseases are still very limited much more ought to be done than is done We have but one endowed bed in the Womans Ward we ought to have many more for many of our patients are not even able to pay the small sum necessary for their board which is fixed at a nominal price The Directors

repeat their urg ent desire to endow every bed in their H osshypital so that non e but actually poor people may be treated here It may be convenient for people with limited means to be treated in a hospital but the most deserving class a re really those who have nothing who cannot even pay the cost of feedshying them who are literally in the highways and hedges of life

Through the generosity of Mrs C P Huntington the directors have just added a Lying-In service at No 543 East 13th Street to the other facilities of the Hospital under the cha rge o f Professor von Ramdohr where poor women can be ca red for in their homes without charge

Two hundred dolla rs ($200) will endow a bed in the Babies vVard for a year Three thou sand dolla rs ($3000) on e in pershypetu ~ ty Three hundred dolla rs ($300) will endow a bed in the ~Tomans Ward for a yea r or in any other ward in the Hospital a nd three thousand dollars ($3000) one in perpetuity

THE Directors of the Post-Graduate H ospital and Babies middotWards in presenting their Annual Report inform their

friends and the public that more patients have been under their care than in a ny year since the establi shment of these Institushytions 842 house patients have been treated of these 286 were babies and 556 adults 13007 patients have been treated in the Dispensary where 4379T visi ts have been made The District Physician of the Dispensary Dr J C Smith has attended 413 patients at their homes

The Directors earnestly appeal to the people of New York in behalf of this g reat charity Babies children women and men here receive skilled med ical and surgical care and a large class of practicioners of medicine by watching the details of this treatment a re made mu ch more competent for thei r work
