Father Leete’s message . . . “Nemo dat quod non habet.” A Latin phrase that means, “You cannot give what you don’t have.”

When I entered the seminary, I registered as a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel parish in the Westport area of Kansas City. Msgr. Blacet was the Pastor of that parish and had been for a number of years.

Msgr. Blacet died recently at the age of 98, having been ordained in 1946. This was the era when most seminary classes were still taught in Latin

so priests at that time were generally fluent in the language. One of my memories of the good Monsignor was the Latin phrase, “Nemo dat quod

non habet.” He would mention that to me often when I would complain about whatever struggles I was having in the seminary. His point was, if I

didn’t learn what I was sent to learn in the seminary, it would be impossible for me to pass that knowledge on to the people I would be serving as a

priest. I can’t give what I don’t have. If I didn’t study as diligently as I could in the seminary, I would be lacking when I was finished with school. And it might be that lack that would make me unable to lead a precious soul to Our Lord.

After all, this is why priests are ordained. A priest is not ordained to be an entertainer, a psychiatrist, a counselor, a money manager or a social

worker. A priest is ordained to offer sacrifice on behalf of the living and the dead and to lead souls to Our Lord. Nothing is more important than that. The salvation of souls is the supreme law of the Church, as stated in the Church’s own law book called the Code of Canon Law.

As I begin my assignment here at Cathedral, I ask you to please, in your charity, pray for me that I will use wisely what the Church

in her goodness has given me: a philosophical and theological foundation for leading souls to Christ. I hope that I will, with God’s

grace, conscientiously apply what I’ve learned and that what I lack will be provided by the Holy Spirit. Whatever good I

accomplish will only be done by allowing God to work through me. Whatever mistakes I make, those are all my own.

I thank you for the kind words of welcome I’ve received so far. Please pray for me and know that you are all in my daily prayers. I

ask you to offer a prayer also for the repose of the soul of Msgr. Blacet. He spent over 70 years in the priesthood giving to the souls

in his care what he had and led a countless number of them to Our Lord. May we all be that kind of good and faithful servant who

passes on to others what has been so generously given to us.

Stewardship makes a difference… Thank you to all

of our vegetable growers who brought in some of their

harvest to Cathedral’s pantry: Dr. Tim Curry, Bill and

Gisele McGaughy, Steve and Norma Conant, Kris and

Jeff Daise, Dustin Carpenter, Chris and Bob Den

Ouden, and many others who have donated items for those

in need. Everything is so appreciated. God bless you.
