Seven Healthy Habits Plans

Monday: Habits 1, 2, 3 “Start with You”

1. Be Proactive- You’re in Charge- Write a list of words on the board (love, respect, trustworthy,

pride, honesty, peace, success, security, humble, kind, valuable, patient). Read the list of words. Students will respond with words that have the opposite meaning. What are the differences between the two words? How do these qualities play out in your life? Which side of the coin are you going to choose to live?

- Group students and pass out scenarios (document name scenarios). They will role-play how to respond to the situation proactively. Discuss how each situation plays out.

2. Begin with the End in Mind- Have a Plan- What career would you like to have in the future? Think about a

career from your ILP that you found interesting, or one that you have always thought you might like to pursue. What steps must you take to get there? Discuss as a whole group some of the student’s responses.

- A Personal Mission Statement: Explain what a mission statement is and how it is the first step toward beginning with the end in mind by reading pages 81-84 aloud. Students will then fill out their Great Discovery page (pdf name Great Discovery). Discuss the four methods to writing a mission statement on pages 90 and 91. Students will then write their own mission statements.

3. Put First Things First- Work First, Then Play- Have students brainstorm all the activities they need to get done

this week. Include things like homework, sports, family engagements, etc. Write these on the board. Then ask them to rank their importance by numbering them, one being the most important and ten being the least. Then discuss how students ranked their activities and why one is more important than the other. Students should be doing this on their own sheet of paper. Tell them to keep it because they will use it with another habit.

Tuesday: Habits 4, 5, 6 “Then Play Well with Others”

4. Think Win-Win- Everyone Can Win- Have the students sit in a circle. Pass around a bag of Hershey’s

the poor listening styles on pages 168-170. How did they eventually talk with one another properly? Talk about genuine listening skills on pages 171-178.

- How do you seek to be understood after you have sought to first understand? Read pages 178-179.

7. Sharpen the Saw- Balance Feels Best- Place a balance and two different colored chips on a table. Tell

Read pages 206 and 207 and discuss why balance is important.

- How can we sharpen our saw in four ways: body, mind, heart, and soul? Do a four-square on the board together with suggestions to sharpen all four. Challenge students to take a baby step today. Read the baby steps on page 242.

- Look back at the list made for Habit 3. Are there any activities you would like to change the ranking of, or activities you would like to add or take away to make your life more balanced?
