Theatre Etiquette

A Heart for the Arts

My friend, Austin, a treasured member of our crew and FOA

family, is moving to Texas. I’m happy for him and his career. He

started with us when he was just a young kid.

I’ve heard from dozens of kids – grown up now - who have said

that the FOA gave them a place to learn more about their craft,

and because of their experiences here, grew more confident and

articulate at school and with their family. I’ve heard from parents

who can testify that their child found their strength and belief in

themselves at the FOA. At school, many kids are labeled by well-

meaning teachers- and most definitely peers- as athletes,

scholars, nerds, or nobodies, and, well, we all know that people

are never that one-dimensional. At the FOA, they can re-discover

themselves all while learning more about their own inner Artist.

And that’s important. But honestly, that level of growth can happen in the arts

everywhere. That’s why I support the arts in schools and

anywhere we can practice them.

Yet there’s another level that we hope our young ones - and our

young-at-hearts - can achieve. It is a level where the story we are

telling is more important than any other aspect of our project. It is

more important than our own interests, it is more relevant than our

skills, and much larger than the part we get after auditions.

Sometimes the story is fun-loving silliness like Seussical, helping

us to demonstrate for ourselves, each other, and perhaps you, the

audience, that seeking joy and fun can be quite necessary in a

world filled with cynicism, greed, and war. Other times, stories like

Exodus and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe lift our minds to

consider our highest values, like courage, loyalty, and

faith. Whatever the story, if we have chosen to tell it together,

then each person plays their role in telling it, and the story

wouldn’t be complete without every individual playing their role.

This level of understanding can be difficult for the most mature of

us, but we strive for it here nonetheless.

That’s what makes the Foundation of Arts unique even among

arts organizations. We try not to get the cart before the horse, so

to speak. You see, while we love the art we are creating, fully

appreciating excellence in theatre, visual arts, and dance, it’s the

process of creating that we deem the most valuable. When the

creative process is focused on teamwork, discipline,

perseverance, and creativity in an encouraging atmosphere, then

great blessings occur in the individual. And the funny thing is,

when the process is focused on the right principles, excellence in

the product seems to come naturally.

I hope Austin experienced the FOA at its best. He grew up to be

such a value to his family, his teammates at work, and our

community. And he is quite a talent. He will always have a home

here, but I’m pretty sure he will do his best, as well, to put the

story first in Texas, just like he does here at the FOA.

because we put process over product, then I’d love to hear more

thoughts from you on why that’s important. In the meantime, find

your place in our FOA family, we would love to have you.

piece by the FOA’s Alisa Becton is one for the ages. Tickets on sale February 20.

The Producers Auditions Join us on the stage for a hilariously over the top musical.

Support The Foundation of Arts because we…

• Believe that engaging in the arts grows people and unites community

• Help people, and each other, learn discipline, teamwork, creativity, and focus through arts experiences - which arm them for success in any field

• Provide disciplined, creative, arts study and experiences, trying our best to enable everyone to learn, even if they can’t fully pay for it

• Are a place for children and adults to participate in goal-oriented arts-study, in a non-competitive and technique-based environment

• Serve at least 400 families per week through arts education, theatre, and outreach activities

• Offer community theatre with ten differing productions per year including The Nutcracker Ballet, musical theatre, and children’s theatre

• Stand alone as an arts organization in Northeast Arkansas that provides live theatre at relatively low ticket prices for thousands of patrons each year—and a Pay What You Can performance for each show so that everyone can grow from live theatre

• Work with adults and children with disabilities through the arts, allowing them to perform annually on stage

• Bring an annual count of 55,000 trips into downtown Jonesboro for our community

• Need your support—ticket sales and tuition paid support only about half of what it takes to serve Northeast Arkansas and the more than 20,000 people we positively affect annually
