Setting up Excel to automatically open .CSX files published to eReports  The process of setting the default program for an extension is a little different for each version of Windows.   The Financial and HR PeopleSoft applications use a custom extension (.CSX) which is very similar to a regular comma separated values file (.CSV).  If you have Excel installed on your Windows machine the file association for the .CSV extension is already defined but you will have to define a new file association for .CSX files.     

Using the GUI in Windows 7 to set associations:  If the .CSX extension has never had an association defined (I.E. a new machine).   

1) Save a .CSX file. 

  

2) Put your cursor over the .CSX and right click the mouse to open the options box.   3) Select the Open option.

 (NOTE: In this screen shot, I used a .CSK association so I could get this dialog box.  The .CSX was already defined)  

4) Now you can select the program to automatically use to open files with a .CSX file extension. a. Select radial button “Select a program from a list of installed programs”. b. Click OK. 

 

  

5) Normally, you will see Microsoft Excel as an option.   a. Select the Microsoft Excel icon. b. Check the box “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”. c. Click OK and you are done.   

Setting up Excel to automatically open .CSX files published to eReports   If Microsoft Excel is not an option but Excel is installed on your machine you can browse to the location of 

the Excel program (excel.exe).  

1) If the Open with box does not have the Microsoft Excel icon. 

 (NOTE: In this screen shot the Microsoft Excel icon is showing because Excel is installed correctly on this PC.)   

2) Select the Browse … button and browse to EXCEL.EXE. 

a. For Windows 7 machines with Office 2010 the path normally is 

C:\Program Files (x86\Microsoft Office\Office14

3) Browse using the left side folder structure (not by double clicking folders in the right panel).  

 4) Select (Highlight) the EXCEL.EXE icon

5) Click the Open button. 

 

  

6) The Microsoft Excel icon is added to the choose program box. 

a. Select the Microsoft Excel icon (It normally is automatically selected) b. Check the box “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”. c. Click OK and you are done.

If Microsoft Excel is not in the path above, you can find where it is and browse to that path 

instead of the one above.  

1) Open Windows Explorer. 

a. Select Local Disk (C:) in the left panel b. Type excel.exe in the search box c. Press enter. d. Use the path to the excel.exe shown in the search results in the instructions above.

 If you were not able to successfully create the association with the steps above.  You still have three options available to opening up .CSX files published on eReports. 

1) Follow these steps to view the file.  You will need to do this every time you want to view a .CSX files. (https://assist‐erp.osu.edu/assistereports84/WebHelp/Basics%20Pages/basics_excel_import_wizard.html)   

2) Send email to eReportsTeam@osu.edu and we can start a shadow session and try to define the association. 

3) Contact your local IT support and have them setup the association. Step four on this document shows an easier way to setup the association but requires an administrator.
