Goals Clover
Paralysis
“There’s so much to do I can’t keep it all straight”
Fear
“I’ve failed in the past, I’ll just fail again”
Impostor Syndrome and Resistance
“No one wants to read my stuff or listen to what I’ve got to say”
Surrender
“I suck at marketing, I just want to write”
Just a little step forward can mean the difference
Sprint vs. Marathon● So much pressure!● Indie community is too fast!● Not all of us can write 9k words a day like Amanda Lee● Not all of us can publish 3-4 books a year● Not all of us can put out a newsletter every two weeks● Not all of us can spend hours promoting on social media
How to get through the pressure?● The do, do, do indie mentality is a $$$ mentality● Separate your goals from the drive to make money● Not everyone is Michael Anderle● Not everyone has 20 books● Not everyone is or will be making six-figures as an author● Set goals for what you can do!
Slow and steady
“They were an overnight success, 10 years in the making”
Piece by piece
“They don’t make skyscrapers in a day, and you can’t build an author career overnight”
Finish something
“10% complete on 100 items means you have zero things done”
Check.

Take “5” out of the “4”● Set 5 High Level Goals from our 4 Leaf Clover● 1 Infrastructure● 1 Content● 1 Connection● 1 Promotion● 1 Freebie/Anything
Beginner Author Example● Infrastructure - Website● Content - Publish 1 book● Connection - Befriend 5 authors in my genre● Promotion - One Marketing campaign/”Push”● Freebie/Anything - Improve my writing craft
Beginner - Infrastructure/Content● Infrastructure - Website
○ Facebook website: www.facebook.com/beginnerauthor○ Banner Image○ Links to my books○ Weekly content
● Content - Publish 1 book○ 30k words○ Digital/Print Cover○ Descriptions○ Categories○ Author page/bio○ Print Books
Beginner - Infrastructure/Content● Connection - Befriend 5 authors in my genre
○ Like, Follow, Subscribe○ Read lead magnets and book 1s○ Leave reviews○ Monthly monitoring of website, author catalog
● Promotion - One Marketing campaign/”Push”○ 1 Newsletter swap○ Social posts○ Two newsletter promo sites○ Free KDP-Select days
● Freebie/Anything - Improve my writing craft
My 2019 Goals● Infrastructure - Move to Mailerlite● Content - Write 150k words, publish 6 Works
○ Three books, 2 Novellas, 1 Short
● Connection - Befriend 5+more authors in my genre● Promotion - Promote Necro Series Three times● Freebie/Anything - Improve my writing craft
I know what you’re thinking...
● Start with a simple list of things you hope to accomplish and expand from there!
● You can develop a year’s worth of goals in less than an hour● Keep goals to 5● Think of the year in halves or quarters
Example:
● Infrastructure - Link Bookfunnel to mailerlite● Content - 2 Books published● Connection - Add 1000 subscribers to my list● Promotion - $250 online sales, $250 in person sales● Freebie/Anything - Redo all of my covers
This is too involved!
Monolithic Work vs. Iterative Work
2020
● You as an individual have only so much bandwidth, aka Work in Progress● To maximize your WIP we may need to limit our WIP ● Never exceed the WIP, always keep the WIP under control● Start with a WIP and assess and grow as you go. (Protip: Start with 2)● A work task should be less than 8 hours of work (if too long split up into 2+)
Work in Progress (WIP)
● Every month:○ Review the completed work○ Review the coming work○ Tweak
● Is there a problem that I can fix?● Can I improve my efficiency?● Did I have a task issue (Work was more than 8 hours of time)?
Iterative Improvement!
● Goal - Re-publish a Book, an updated version of Alone in the Darkness will be available on Amazon (digital and Print), email opt-in updated (epub and mobi), and bookfunnel channels (epub, mobie, pdf)
● Tasks:○ Compile feedback from Liz○ Compile feedback from wife○ Compile feedback from advanced reader (find email with content)○ Format and update final word document○ Upload to bookfunnel (ARC and Regular)○ Review mailerlite email opt-in content○ Update autoresponder links○ Update website optin links○ Upload to Amazon○ Update Amazon Paperback with new word document○ Order new copies (5-10)○ Push out to my List for free
Example: Re-Release Alone in the Darkness
Takeaway● Limit your yearly goals to 5● Focus one on each
○ Infrastructure, Content, Connection, Promotion, and a freebie
● Break those goals down into smaller tasks <8 hours each● Limit your WIP and drive to the end of the year
Digital Tools● (FREE) Strides phone app (Daily goals)
○ Work out, write, get outside, talk to real people
● (FREE) Wunderlist web browser and app (Task tracker)○ Great task aggregator○ Great WIP task tracker○ Move tasks from folders into your WIP
● “Getting Thing Done” aka GTD○ https://gettingthingsdone.com/what-is-gtd/
