S = SPECIFIC• Identify• Not Vague• Intentions• Visualize
VISUALIZE THE OUTCOMEBefore After
SPECIFIC EXAMPLE• Good - I want to improve my public speaking skills.• Better - I will develop my public speaking skills in an
effort to help position me for a managerial role by completing my first manual in Toastmasters.
M = MEASURABLE
• Quantify• “You can’t managewhat you can’t measure”
MEASURABLE EXAMPLE• Good - I will complete the Toastmaster manual • Better - I will complete all 10 speeches in the manual
this year
A = ACTIONABLE OR ATTAINABLE• Action verb• Too lofty
ACTIONABLE EXAMPLE• Good - I will be more consistent with my presentations.• Better - I will schedule writing time and practice time for
each speech.
R = REALISTIC OR RELEVANT• Stretch• Common sense• Emotional weight (The Why)• Get out of your comfort zone
REALISTIC EXAMPLE• Good - I will perform 4 speeches a month.• Better - I will improve my communication skills and keep
moving forward by performing one speech each month.
T = TIMELY• Date• Calendar• End
TIMELY EXAMPLE• Good - I will complete the Competent Communicator
manual.• Better - I will complete the Competent Communicator
manual by December 31st 2016.
