Dear Newton Neighbor:

I am delighted to dedicate the months of April, May and June to the 3rd annual Festival of the Arts in Newton and to share this Calendar of Events with you. This is our opportunity to celebrate and showcase Newton’s talented citizens and organizations and make it a truly citywide event. Nearly all of our arts and cultural organization are participating in almost 100 events that span every art form and I hope that residents and families of all backgrounds will take advantage of this opportunity unique to Newton. Art, music and cultural events are very important to the richness and vitality of a community and to Newton in particular. We have an abundance of talented residents and organizations that contribute to the local and national art, music and culture scene. The extraordinary number of talented people who live here is part of what makes Newton the vibrant and enriching community it is.

The Festival of the Arts will help support our four food pantries and our non-profit arts and cultural organizations so that they may continue their important work throughout the year. It is essential that as a community we continue to invest in helping our neighbors and in ensuring access to culture and the arts for all.

I am grateful to Newton Community Pride and its president Ruth Barnett, along with the staff of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs, our generous business community and an engaged volunteer committee who all together have created this amazing Festival of the Arts.

I hope you will join us this spring. Together, let’s experience and discover all that Newton has to offer. With your support, we can keep Newton the kind of community that we value. This Festival of the Arts is a new beginning.

Sincerely,

Setti D. WarrenMayor City of Newton, MA

MOnDaY aPril 3“Raise the Roof”: A Film 7pm Temple Shalom, 175 Temple St., WN Presented with the National Center for Jewish FilmA six time film festival award winner, “Raise the Roof ” documents MassArt professors’ construction of a magnificent, mural-covered wooden Polish synagogue cupola ceiling destroyed by the Nazis. Three hundred six plus 16 equals one amazing accomplishment. That’s the number of students/artisans and countries involved in the construction of an ornate synagogue cupola ceiling. There were once a few hundred magnificent wooden cupola ceilings in synagogues in Poland, but the remaining ones were destroyed by the Nazis. Inspired by images of these exceptional 17th and 18th century houses of worship, Professors Rick and Laura Brown of MassArt and Handshouse Studio, set out to build a replica of the mural covered Gwozdziec synagogue. The Browns finally realized their decade-long dream in 2014. The cupola ceiling was unveiled at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. The award-winning movie traces the recreation of the cupola over a few years. See the trailer at http://bit.ly/2njyKwl. In addition to the movie, Rick and Laura Brown and Krista Lima, who served as a Core Painting Leader on the project will answer questions during a panel discussion. The evening which will include a reception will end by 9:30pm.Tix: $10.00 per person, payable by credit card only at http://bit.ly/2l0OW96. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Encaustic painting lends itself perfectly to this concept of here and now. There is immediacy to encaustic which suits an intuitive style of working, and its inherent translucent characteristics readily express a wide range of subject matter. Sat. May 6, 1-3pm Tim Ray, and Dayramir GonzalezTim Ray followed by Dayramir Gonzalez at 2pm. Perhaps best known as long-time pianist for Lyle Lovett, Tim Ray’s wide-ranging skills as a soloist and accompanist have afforded him the opportunity to perform with legendary performers from Aretha Franklin, and Bonnie Raitt, to Phil Woods and the Boston Pops. Dayramir Gonzalez’ meteoric rise is being chronicled in a documentary currently in production. Returning to Berklee College from his home in NYC to shoot some interviews, he graciously accepted our invitation to play in Newton before heading to Cuba to host a music festival. Look for a special surprise guest to perform with him.

Sat. May 13, 1-3pm Alan Rowe and Dominique EadeAlan returns to perform his dramatic and colorful mastery. His range of energetic hard swinging compositions to sensitive, melodic ballads distinguish his style and his reputation as one of the grand masters in New England. A special treat at 2pm, vocalist Dominique Eade. David Hajdu wrote in the New York Times Magazine, “I already knew who the Next Thing in jazz singing would be: Dominique Eade. An impossibly versatile vocalist, composer, lyricist and instrumental arranger...”

Sat. May 20, 1-3pm Alexei Tsiganov and Nina Ott-Chris & Lopes Trio Russian born Alexei Tsiganov’s jaw-dropping artistry and innovation embrace a multitude of styles: Classical, Latin, Modal, BeBop, and more beginning at 1pm. At 2pm Nina Ott and Chris Lopes bring their trio to perform. Nina was on the faculty at Berklee for 6 years before moving to San Francisco. Returning east after years of performing in the vibrant Latin Jazz scene there, Nina and her husband Chris Lopes bring their magical trio back to Waban. This group’s interactions are breathtaking and their rhythmic creativity is hypnotic. In case of rain, the performances will move inside. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. As a thirteen-year-old, Amy’s grandmother escaped the Warsaw Ghetto alone, by disguising herself as a gentile. “My mother taught me: our memories and our families shape who we become. What does it mean to be part of a family, and how does each generation bear the imprint of the past, its traumas and its gifts? Flying Couch is my answer to these questions, the documentation of my quest for identity and understanding.” Book signing follows discussion.Free www.newtonfreelibrary.net

Joint Art Reception for Eli Portman (Gallery) & Barney Levitt (Main Hall)7pm Newton Free Library, 330 Homer St., NCThe public is welcome to attend the opening reception for this art show. He uses dynamic pen and ink line work, and sometimes very bright, almost garish colors, to illustrate landscapes and scenes in Boston that remind us of where we came from, and where we’re going. Barney Levitt tries to create a narrative from the objects of his still life paintings that elevate and give new meaning to their ordinariness. www.newtonfreelibrary.net.

Photographer Stewart Clements captured the exhibition. Multi-media artist Wendy Fine created physical spaces that told the story of the Mizrahi family’s emigration from Iran to Newton as a result of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Viewers experienced the tensions for women as they exited to the street while donning a Chador, and the memories and loss of family gatherings around their Persian carpet. Then with the rebirth of traditions in a new world, the exhibition focused on the role of women in perpetuating culture and tradition. Wendy Wolfe Fine is a Newton multi-media artist and documentary filmmaker whose work aligns with hybrid documentary filmmakers and visual artists who use avant-garde and documentary technique to develop complex visualizations that depict the cultural, the historic and the personal. www.newtoncommunitypride.org/festival
