‘Brad’s Single’ FaresWhile you wouldn’t expect the divorce of Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to enter the aviation space, it has indeed, thanks to Norwegian Air. The carrier cheekily used the split to advertise its sale fares to Los Ange-les, taking out an ad in a newspaper that simply read ‘Brad is single’ along with the price, in a bid to lure travellers to LA.
Airlines were one of the most complained about industries by Kiwi consumers last year, with Air New Zealand taking the bulk of those complaints, according to a new report by the Commerce Com-mission.Around 3% of all complaints to the commission under the Fair Trad-ing Act last year were related to air-lines, with 134 in total, according to the commission’s Consumer Is-sues 2016 report. The year before, airlines weren’t mentioned in the industries with the most complaints.
Kiwis Complaining About Airlines
Most concerns were about possible misrepresentation around seat avail-ability; the difference between an advertised price and booking price; opt-out of travel insurance; fees per leg of a trip; and general pricing er-rors, notes the commission.Of the 134 complaints, 88 were about Air NZ, and the carrier was the fifth most complained about trader overall, behind Spark, Vodafone, sellers using TradeMe, and Harvey Norman. The Air NZ figure is more than double its complaints total of 43 the year before, and four times higher than Jetstar, which saw the second highest number of complaints with 22; while Qantas accounted for seven. The air-lines which accounted for the remain-ing complaints aren’t mentioned. The commission noted that large retailers with a higher volume of sales might reasonably be expected to gen-erate a higher number of complaints, and it hasn’t adjusted for the fact—al-though it did say trader practices can also be a cause. It also noted that the numbers reflect what consumers have complained about, and don’t indicate that any law has been breached.Air NZ didn’t respond to requests for comment.

CX: 747 Played A Crucial Role In Our GrowthCathay Pacific is preparing to farewell its iconic Boeing 747, which it says played a crucial role in transforming CX from a regional carrier to a global air-line. CX’s 747 will operate its final flight, a journey from Hong Kong to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, on 30 Sep and 01 Oct. The aircraft first joined the CX fleet in 1979, replacing the Boeing 707. Able to carry more than double the amount of passengers, the arrival of the more fuel-efficient 747 enabled CX to rapidly ex-pand its network to European and North American destinations throughout the 1980s and 1990s, opening HKG up to the world. It was CX’s sole long-haul aircraft until the mid-1990s, when the A340 arrived. However the 747’s oper-ating economics can’t compete anymore with modern aircraft like the B777 and A350, one of which will begin flying to Auckland from 28 Oct.
Whittaker’s New RoleAir New Zealand group gm airports John Whittaker has been appointed to the executive role of chief air op-erations and people safety officer, effective 03 Oct. FJ HNL From $699Fiji Airways has Auckland-Honolulu flights from $699, for sales to 17 Oct. A free stopover is permitted in Nadi in both directions, when less than 72 hours. See GDS for details.
Better AKL Road LinkWork has started today on the East-West Link roading project in Auckland, which will eventually im-prove travel times for those heading to and from the airport. The first stage of the project, the $15 million Onehunga works, is now underway and will include widening the South-western Motorway to four lanes in each direction between Neilson St and Queenstown Rd in Onehunga to provide extra capacity, as well as adding dedicated bus lanes to State Highway 20 at Walmsley Rd to im-prove airport travel times. Stage one is expected to be complete by Feb.
Wellington has become the second New Zealand airport to reach the five million passenger mark, fol-lowing growth of 5.2% in the 12 months to Aug. The strongest growth at the air-port has been from Auckland, with more visitors connecting from over-seas; and there’s also strong regional growth thanks to Jetstar’s new ser-vices, extra Sounds Air services and Air New Zealand flying larger aircraft
into some regional areas.“We’ve seen significant spikes in passenger num-bers around key events such as the Military Tattoo earlier in the year, All Blacks games in Wellington and the Super Rugby final,” says airport chief commercial officer Matt Clarke.“The market is growing strongly. We’re seeing airlines investing in capacity and Wellington Airport is working with all our airline partners to grow the market and stimulate demand to travel.”As well as strong domestic growth, international passenger numbers are up almost 20% in 12 months to reach over 900,000, and the launch of the new Singapore Airlines service will increase that further, says Clarke.“Having SQ coming into our city will be a game changer for Wellington and for New Zealand as it will supercharge central New Zealand’s tourism indus-try,” he says. “Wellington will be the gateway to New Zealand for passen-gers coming in from Canberra and we are already seeing new visitor itinerar-ies on sale around the world with New Zealand adventures starting or ending right here in the capital.”

Qantas will launch daily flights between Melbourne and Tokyo’s Narita Airport from 16 Dec—and Jetstar will stop operating the route from 25 Feb, after the sum-mer peak.QF says the new flights are down to growing demand and mark the next step in the carrier’s Asian growth strategy. They’ll be operated by an upgraded, two-class A330-300 with 297 seats, and will connect with JQ’s domestic network within Japan as well as QF and JQ services across the Tasman.“The Qantas Group is perfectly placed to support the resurgent growth we’re seeing, with the biggest Australia-Japan network, the biggest domestic network in Australia, and the biggest low-cost carrier network in Japan through Jetstar,” says QF International boss Gareth Evans. “Our dual-brand strategy and the
size of our fleet means we have the ability to move quickly to meet de-mand where it’s strongest, putting the right aircraft on the right route. We have received great feedback on the world-class product we’ve created for our Airbus A330 fleet, and now even more customers flying to Japan will be able to enjoy the reconfigured aircraft.”Fares for QF’s new MEL-NRT service are on sale now. JQ customers booked on MEL-NRT flights from 26 Feb will be re-accommodated on the QF flights.

Coconut macarons, ice wine and a flight over the Niagara Falls were among the highlights for agents on an Eastern Canada famil with World Journeys—which reports that demand for the region is growing. The group flew Air Canada to To-ronto and stayed at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, where they de-clared the hotel’s famous coconut macaroons the ‘most delicious thing in the world’. They also tasted the region’s famous ice wine at Konzel-mann Estate Winery, then experi-enced Niagara Falls by boat at night (complete with fireworks) and on a helicopter ride.Next they boarded VIA Rail (in business class) for a trip to Mon-treal, where they enjoyed a walking tour of the Old Town and a glamor-ous dinner at the Ritz Carlton. After-wards it was on to Quebec City for a walking tour through the important sites, before heading home. For more photos from the trip, see
