Section C[25 marks]

Question 26 - 31 are based on the following passage.Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

1 Except for their overgrown beard and moustache, two Australian miners who created history

with their miraculous escape from entombment a kilometre underground, showed no signs of

physical or emotional harm from the worst ordeal of their life. Trapped in a 12-metre metal

cage, which saved them after an earthquake struck a gold mine in Tasmania, Todd Russell and

Brant Webb strode in the cold pre-dawn darkness towards their ecstatic families to the

surprise of the doctors whose advice they ignored.

2 Although about 10 000 miners die every year in mining accidents throughout the world,

no survivor has escaped so courageously and triumphantly after a 14-day nightmare in

conditions that had never been experienced anywhere before.

3 Every word on the progress of the delicate rescue operations was digested with anxiety

and hope because it was hard to believe that anyone could emerge alive from such an

extraordinary accident. But emerge the trapped men did, as though they had just finished

their regular shift underground, and walked without any help from the dozens of willing

hands near the entrance of the mine. The very sight of the two happy and relieved men

brought tears of joy to their families and the townsfolk.

4 The two miners had been initially feared dead after missing for the first five days. Not

surprisingly, they too had doubted that they would ever see their families again while their

families had admitted that they had given up hope of finding the miners alive. The very fact

that Russell, who has three young children, and Webb, a father of teenage twins, have

survived against all odds is amazing. Furthermore, their resilience and determination to walk

unaided to their families and friends were remarkable.

5 The biggest obstacle they had faced was the possibility of a further cave-in if the rescuers

blasted the rocks in the final stage of the rescue. The blast might cause some loose rocks to

dislodge onto the cage. Rescue experts who had flown in from various parts of Australia were

aware of the danger after studying the site. So far, they had used low impact blasting to cut a

horizontal tunnel to get as close to the trapped miners as they could. Now, they had to

carefully test every step of their thrust into the newly-cut rocky cave not only for the safety of

the two miners but also for themselves.

6 This slowed down the rescue operations and perhaps prolonged the agony of the trapped

men, whose expected date of freedom was repeatedly pushed back. The first sign of a

breakthrough came on Monday night when a small probe, used as a directional guide, poked

through the rock below the trapped miners’ cage. At this stage, only a metre of rock separated

the rescuers from the miners.

7 Tirelessly, the rescuers began to drill and dig the final vertical tunnel and reached the

miners, who greeted them with shouts of “yee-hah”. They were then bound to a stretcher and

carried through the 90 cm deep and 1 m wide escape tunnel, which had been manually drilled

with small explosives used to crack the solid rocks. To the elation of the rescuers, Webb came

out first, followed by Russell a few minutes later. They walked confidently as though nothing

had happened to a board where they removed their name cards to end what seemed to be

their longest ever shift underground.

8 Amid the cheers, joy, ringing of the church bells, waving and yelling of greetings, the

townsfolk, the miners, their families and the rescuers remembered the third miner, Larry

Knight, who was killed in the rock fall a week earlier. His body had been recovered and buried

the day the two trapped miners were rescued.
