MISSIONWKU Summer Sessions supports the overall mission of Western Kentucky University by providing academic opportunities that benefit both students and faculty. We work to maintain optimal enrollment during summer sessions, as we extend access to lifelong learners. We address students’ emerging needs in order to enhance student success at WKU.

ABOUT WKU SUMMER SESSIONS

DEFINITIONS

Structured Courses: Courses with set meet-ing times and dates, including C (lecture/lab), L (lecture), and S (seminar) courses, but does not include Independent Study, Thesis, or Practicum.

Sections: Courses may have multiple sections offered in the same session, and each section is counted.

Course Enrollment: Registration in course sections. Students will be duplicated in this count.

Head Count: Students registered for more than one course are counted only once during the term.

Term: Within the summer term, there is a May Session (3 to 13 weeks beginning in May), A and B Sessions (3 to 8 weeks beginning in June), and C and D Sessions (3 to 5 weeks long beginning in July).

Full Term: Classes that meet the entire summer term.

ENROLLMENTWKU experienced a slight decrease in enrollment in Fall 2015 compared to Fall 2016. This typically impacts the enrollment of Summer Sessions. However, WKU also implemented a policy so that no student would be dropped for non-payment. There were 6,097 students that took Summer 2016 classes. This was a 3.1% increase from Summer 2015. Course enrollment was 10,585 which was a 0.7% increase from Summer 2015. The student credit hour production was 30,260, an increase of 0.3%

Summer scholarship

WKU Summer Sessions sponsored a scholarship program in 2016 to try to offset some of the financial burdens of summer school. The scholarship program was modified this year from an automatic award to an application process to mirror the scholarship process students face in the Fall semester. The scholarship was offered to any undergraduate student at WKU with 6 or more hours in the summer (not all study abroad). For students with a current GPA of 2.5 to 2.99, the scholarship amount was $200. For students with a current GPA of 3.0 or higher, the scholarship amount was $395, which is equivalent to one hour of Kentucky undergraduate resident rate tuition. There were 63 undergraduate students that received the $200 scholarship, and 203 received the $395 scholarship.

STUDY ABROADThere were 270 students that studied abroad in Summer 2016, a decrease of 19.6% over Summer 2015. WKU Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs were offered in Argentine, Belgium, Czech Republic, Iceland, Ireland, Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa.

STUDY AWAYWKU’s School of Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport (KRS) in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) has partnered with the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach’s (DELO) Study Away office to offer a summer seminar May 15-22 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Led by KRS faculty Dr. Brad Stinnett and Dr. Evie Oregon, 19 graduate and undergraduate students received an unparalleled behind-the-scenes look at facility planning, design, and constructions processes in professional, intercollegiate, and interscholastic recreation and sport facilities.

“The 3rd annual study away was phenomenal, and our students were exposed to some state of the art facilities and some great professionals,” said Oregon. “I love this trip because we are not only able to learn a lot about each of our students, but more impor-tantly, they were given a chance to learn more about themselves and all of the great opportunities that are available to them in the world of sport and recreation.”

Throughout the seven days in Charlotte, the students and faculty toured Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bank of America Stadium, Time Warner Cable Arena, Bojangles Coliseum, Charlotte Convention Center, Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, and much more.

“Dr. Oregon and I cannot replicate these experiences in the classroom,” stated Stinnett. “As an instructor, this is my favorite course to teach, as I get to watch as students increase their knowledge of venue design and management, enhance their professional network, and clarify their career goals.”

Other Study Away programs for Summer 2016 included a Kentucky Experience course and a Citizen and Self class in San Francisco, California.

Graduate enrollment continues to account for approximately 30% of the entire summer course enrollment.

The data on the right represents course enrollment from the first date of each summer session. In 2016, May Session began May 16, A Session began June 6, B Session began June 13, C Session began July 5, and D Session began July 11.

May Session grew 12% from 2015 to 2016. The July II (D Session) also showed growth this year.

The most popular parts of term in summer 2016 were as follows: 13 week May session, 5 week D Session (July II), 3 week May Session, and 4 week A Session (June I).

WKU Summer Sessions offers convenient classes to fit almost any students’ schedule. This chart demon-strates the enrollment trend in the alternative delivery methods. The online course enrollment data here ex-cludes Independent Learning courses. Evening, weekend, and IVS data exclude WKU Regional campus enrollment.

The increase in the undergraduate population is encouraging, especially since that population has seen two years of decline in the Fall semesters. Targeted marketing, scholarship opportunities, and course offerings contributed to the increase in Summer 2016.

faculty stipend data BY COLLEGE

For courses with high enrollment, a new incentive plan was implanted in Summer 2016.

Additional compensation was paid to the instructor: $100 per credit hour for 20 - 24 students, $200 per credit hour for 25 – 29 students, and $300 per credit hour for 30 or more students.

There were 134 adjustments made for high enrolled classes.

Full-time faculty stipend rates remained the same in 2016 as they have been for the previous six summers. The stipend for full-time faculty was $1,500 per credit hour.

Part-time faculty rates also remained the same. A part-time faculty would make the following for a 3 credit hour course:

• Level I: $1,692• Level II: $1,840• Level III: $2,136• Level IV: $2,280

In Summer 2016, there were 341 paid full-time faculty and 72 paid part-time faculty.

Summer 2016 was the fifth summer in which an enrollment based stipend schedule was utilized. Each college came up with their own guidelines for low-enrolled classes. Departments with good stipend efficiency were awarded through summer distribution dollars.

The winter term effect

Many students are taking both summer and winter courses in order to graduate sooner. In fact, 53% of the Winter 2016 students enrolled in a class this summer.

Institutional Research confirmed that 72% of students who graduated from WKU in 4 years, took at least one summer or winter term course.

Of the students that started but did NOT graduate, 66% never took a summer or winter class.
