JSPS Asian Core Program Ac1vity Plan of Benthos Group (G2B)
Indonesia: SUSETIONO (Research Center for Oceanography, LIPI)
Malaysia: Zulfigar Bin YASIN (Universi1 Sains Malaysia)
Philippines: Annabelle DEL NORTE-‐CAMPOS (University of the Philippines, Visayas)
Thailand: Suchana Apple CHAVANICH (Chulalongkorn University) Vietnam: DO Cong Thung (Ins1tute for Marine Environment and Resources)
Japan: Toshihiko FUJITA (Na1onal Museum of Nature and Science)
Ac1vity in FY2011 • We have not yet started our actual ac1vity in
this Program. We are talking to prepare our ac1vity.
• Prof. Nishida and FUJITA visited Thailand to discuss about the plan of Benthos Group with CHAVANICH and the Thailand members, and also may visit Vietnam in January.
• However, related to the previous Mul1lateral Project, we have publica1ons of field guides and scien1fic papers: for example, Fauna at Kuta Bay, Lombok Island, published by SUSETIONO and Indonesian members.
Ac1vity in FY2011
• Prac1cally, this Workshop is the star1ng point of our ac1vi1es under this new Program.
• We need to have more discussion about our detailed plans. In FY 2012, we would like to have a mee1ng by Na1onal Group Leaders to discuss our future plans of this Acore program
Strategy for ac1vi1es by benthos group
• Reseach ac1vi1es of the members of the Benthos Group are very diverse, in terms of animal groups and of research fields, e.g., taxonomy, ecology, physiology and so on. It is rela1vely difficult to have a common ac1vity which can be done by all members.
• So, under this JSPS Program, we adopt the plan to have both mul1lateral and bilateral ac1vi1es: • Workshops could be mul1lateral. It will be held mul1laterally by all countries to study commonly-‐requested topics.
• Some researches should be done by bilateral collabora1on between Japan and SE Asian countries
Ac1vity Plan (FY2012 & 2013-‐2015)
• Workshop on “The Integra1ve use of classical and molecular taxonomy on marine benthic organisms” • Many especially young scien1sts request the workshop to learn not only the technique of DNA analysis but also how to apply the DNA data to morphologically based taxonomy
• In FY 2012, the workshop will be held in Malaysia, in October, expec1ng about 20 par1cipants
• First star1ng with basic principles, and to be con1nued in 2013-‐2015 for more advanced contents
• Workshop on prac1cal taxonomy is s1ll necessary. Sod corals and sponges are primary targets. It will be held once a year
Ac1vity Plan (FY2012 & 2013-‐2015) • We are going to carry out bilaterally-‐based collabora1ve
researches partly under this Acore Program. Possilble research plans (partly ongoing) are as follows:
• Indonesia (SUSETIONO) – Biodiversity studies on Kai Kecil Island, SE Mollucas
– Study on coastal ecosystems for food security in Ternate and Tual
– Deep-‐sea explora1on by the RV Baruna Jaya of LIPI • Malaysia (YASIN)
– Making a Field guide to the Malaysian sod corals
• Philippines (NORTE-‐CAMPOS) – Oil Impact monitoring, NaGISA annual sampling, meiobenthic
community structure at the Taklong Island Na1onal Marine Reserve
– Benthic Infaunal community structure on seagrass bed at ICE CREAM sites
– Banate Bay benthic community structure
– Benthic quality monitoring in mariculture and aquaculture sites
South China Sea

Sulu Sea

Davao Oriental
Bolinao
Ilocos Norte Manila Bay Batangas

Zambales Philippine Sea
Ac1vity Plan (FY2012 & 2013-‐2015) • Thailand (CHAVANICH)
• Coral cul1va1on using sexual reproduc1on technique for coral restora1on
• Studies on marine organisms (in par1cular ophiuroids) associated with sod corals
• Photo album of marine organisms in Thailand (for public educa1on and awareness)
• Iden1fica1on guide or photo album of “Ophiuroids in SE Asia”/“Ophiuroids associated sod corals in Thailand”
• Vietnam (DO) • Echinoderms in Nha Trang Bay and Cat Ba Islands • Taxonomy of the mollusks in Vietnam’s seas • Monitoring benthic biodiversity in Song Lo seagrass
bed in Nha Trang Bay. • Addi1onally, SUSETIONO and Indonesian members
suggest the Joint Seminar in Jakarta in FY2012
Opinions to the integra1ve ecosystem research
• The seagrass bed is a good and appropriate site for the studies of benthic animals in tropical marine environment.
• We have had no 1me to discuss on this mager yesterday. But some of the benthos group members can join the research on some aspects in the taxonomy and ecology of benthic animals in the seagrass bed.
Proposal about exchange members based on the ac1vi1es planned in FY2012
• Classical and Molecular Taxonomy Workshop – Japan to Malaysia: two lecturers (Acore, Pagern 2)
– Japan and each country to Malaysia: 6 agendants (other fund)
• Prac1cal Taxonomy Workshop – Japan to ?: one lecturer (Acore)
• Researches on ophiuroids associated with sod corals – Japan to Thailand (Acore, Pagern2) – Thailand to Japan (Acore, Pagern2)
• Mee1ng by Na1onal Group Leaders – One agendant from each country to Japan (by Acore and other fund)
Proposals for new members
• We are planning to invite new Japanese members to do our workshops and researches: senior and young scien1sts – Dr. Yukimitsu IMAHARA (Kuroshio Biological Research Founda1on; sod corals)
– Dr. Yuji ISE (Univ. Tokyo; sponges, molecular) – Mr. Masanori OKANISHI, PhD candidate (Univ. Tokyo; brigle stars, molecular)
Candidates of young scien1sts for educa1on in Japan
• Indonesia – SUPONO, Bitung marine field sta1on, Bitung – HADIYANTO, RCO – LIPI, Jakarta
• Malaysia – Dr. Mahadi Mohamad – Dr. Sazlina Mohd. Salleh – Ms. Norhanis Mohd. Razalli

– Marivic Pepino
• Thailand – Mr. Pataporn Kuanui (Chulalongkorn Univ.; corals, molecular) – Mr. Se Songploy (Chulalongkorn Univ.; corals, molecular)
• There are many requests from benthos biologists, they want support to learn molecular techniques for benthic animals.
• Many candidates are nominated, and we need to keep our discussion
