Picture 1: (Genesis 1:1–2:7) 1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. God said, "Let there be light!" and light appeared. He created land and separated it from the water, forming seas, oceans, and lakes, as well as dry land. 2For six days God created things like trees, plants, birds, and animals. 3He looked at everything He created and said, 4"This is good!"

However, God was not finished creating. On the sixth day, 5He formed a man out of dust and breathed life into him. God created the man in His own image. 6The man was later given the name Adam. God looked at Adam and said, "This is very good!" On the seventh day, God rested.

7God saw Adam had no one like him. 8God caused Adam to go into a deep sleep. 9While Adam slept, God removed one of Adam's ribs and used it to create a woman. 10God later named the woman Eve. Adam and Eve lived in a perfect world, without pain, death, or destruction. 11They were in a perfect relationship with God.

Picture 2: (Genesis 2:8–5:32) 1God placed Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. The garden was a beautiful place filled with trees, flowers, rivers, and everything Adam and Eve needed to live. God told Adam and Eve the garden was theirs to care for and enjoy. 2However, God said there was one tree they could not eat from. He told them if they ate from the tree, they would die.

3One day, a serpent (Satan) asked Eve, "Did God really tell you not to eat from the tree in the center of the garden?" 4Eve said, "We may eat from any of the trees except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If we eat from that tree, or even touch it, we will die." 5Satan said, "You will not die. You

will become like God, knowing good and evil." Eve looked at the fruit. 6She saw it looked good and gave into the temptation. 7Eve gave some of the fruit to Adam and he ate it. 8Sin immediately entered the world, bringing death and destruction to God's perfect world. Adam and Eve's relationship with God was broken. Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, He still loved them. 9As a part of their punishment, Adam and Eve had to leave the garden of Eden.

After leaving the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had children and their children had children and so forth.

Picture 3: (Genesis 6:1–9:29) 1For generations, people continued to disobey God. They lived in ways that pleased themselves and not God. 2God was sad He had created people. He decided to destroy every person and animal on earth.

3One man, Noah, and his family tried to obey God. 4God told Noah to build a huge boat called an ark. The ark was 45 feet tall, 75 feet wide, and 450 feet long. Noah obeyed God. 5When the ark was finished, God told Noah to take seven pairs of some animals and one pair of others on the ark. Noah and his family boarded the ark and God shut the door.

6Rain began falling. For 40 days and nights, it rained. Everything on the earth was covered with water. Everything outside the ark died. For 150 days, water covered the earth. After another 150 days, the water went down. Noah waited until God told him to leave the ark. 7After leaving the ark, Noah built an altar and worshiped God. 8God placed a rainbow in the sky as a covenant (agreement) that He would never again flood the whole earth.

9Sadly, Noah's family began disobeying God not long after leaving the ark.

Picture 4: (Genesis 10:1–11:9)1Noah's sons had children and they had children until there were a lot of people on earth. The people had two things in common: they all spoke the same language, and they all lived in the same area.

2To continue living together, the people decided to build a city for themselves. 3Within the city, they built a tower rising to the sky. The people did this so they would be famous and would not be moved all over the earth.

4God saw the people's efforts. He caused the people to begin speaking many different languages so they could not understand one another. 5He scattered (moved) the people all around the earth.

Picture 5: (Genesis 11:10–22:24)Shem, one of Noah's sons, had a family. 1One of Shem's descendants (family member) was a man named Abram.

2Abram married a woman named Sarai. 3One day, God said to Abram, "Leave the place you are living with your family and move to place I will show you. I will make you a great nation." 4Abram obeyed God, and took his nephew Lot with him. 5Abram and Lot's herdsmen fought over the land needed for their animals. 6Abram told Lot to choose which way he wanted to go. 7Lot chose the area of Sodom (SAHD uhm), and Abram went the opposite way. Later, Abram saved Lot's life from the sin in Sodom.

8Abram and Sarai did not have any children. They wanted a child, but God had not allowed them to become parents. Sarai suggested Abram have a child with her servant Hagar (HAY gahr). Abram listened to Sarai and had a son with Hagar. 9The son's name was Ishmael (ISH may el). Abram was 86 years old at this time.

10God renewed His covenant with Abram. God told Abram he would be the father of a great nation. God changed Abram's name to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah. God also said Sarah would have a baby boy, although she was 89 years old and Abraham was 99. 11God said the baby's name was to be 12Isaac, which means "laughter." (Sarah had laughed when she heard she would have a baby.)

Everything happened just as God said.

13Sometime later, God tested Abraham. God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. 14Abraham obeyed God and took Isaac with him up the mountain. 15Abraham built an altar, tied up Isaac, and placed him on the altar. Just before he sacrificed Isaac, God stopped him. Because of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac, God knew Abraham would not keep anything from Him. God provided a ram for the sacrifice.

Picture 6: (Genesis 23:1–36:43)1After he grew up, Isaac married a young woman named Rebekah (reh BEK uh). 2Isaac and Rebekah had twin sons, 3Jacob and Esau (EE saw). 4Even before the boys were born, they fought one another.

Part of Jacob and Esau's problems was their parents. Isaac liked Esau better, and Rebekah liked Jacob. 5Esau was an outdoorsman and loved to hunt. Jacob liked to stay close to home. 6One day, Esau had been hunting and became hungry. He smelled the stew Jacob was cooking. 7Esau asked Jacob for a bowl of stew. Jacob said he would give it to him if Esau would give him his birthright, a special right given to firstborn sons. 8Esau agreed.

Just before his death, Isaac had become blind. He wanted to present Esau his birthright. Isaac instructed Esau to prepare his favorite meal. 9Rebekah overheard the conversation and planned to help Jacob. She prepared a meal and had Jacob take it to Isaac. Jacob, dressed in goat skins, pretended to be Esau. Isaac believed Jacob was Esau and gave him the blessing that belonged to Esau. 10When Esau learned what had happened, he became so angry he wanted to kill Jacob. 11Jacob became afraid and ran away. For many years, the brothers lived apart from one another.

[Call attention to the jersey drawing.] This is a wrestling jersey. 12Jacob was a "wrestler." He wrestled (struggled with knowing what to do) with the truth and doing what was right. The number 12 stands for the 12 children Jacob fathered. 13The "L" stands for liar. Throughout his life, Jacob lied many times.

14One night, God spoke to Jacob in a dream. God renewed the covenant he had made with Jacob's grandfather Abraham. God told Jacob, "I will be with you. I will watch over you everywhere you go." 15Jacob promised to do everything God said.

16Jacob fell in love with a woman named Rachel. He wanted to marry her, but Rachel's father tricked him into marrying his older daughter, Leah (LEE uh), first. Now, Jacob knew what it felt like to be lied to. God was not done with Jacob.

17Years later, Jacob married Rachel. 18Rachel became the mother of Joseph.

19While preparing to meet Esau, Jacob once again "wrestled" with God. God changed Jacob's name to Israel [change the "L" to "I"]. 20Later, Jacob and Esau reunited and forgave each other.

Picture 7: (Genesis 37:1–50:26)1Like his father Isaac, Jacob (Israel) had a favorite son as well. 2Israel's favorite son was Joseph. 3Israel made Joseph a beautiful robe.

4Joseph's brothers did not like the fact that he was Jacob's favorite son. The brothers decided to kill Joseph and tell their father a wild animal killed him. However, Reuben (RHOO ben), one of the brothers tried to save him. 5While Reuben was away from the brothers, they sold Joseph to a group of men from Egypt. 6Later, the brothers showed Jacob Joseph's robe. Jacob assumed Joseph was killed by an animal.

While in Egypt, Joseph faced difficulties. 7He was sold into slavery, accused of things he did not do, and put in prison. All the time, God was with Joseph. God gave Joseph the ability to interpret dreams. This helped Joseph be freed from prison as well

as earned him a place of leadership with Pharaoh. Pharaoh trusted Joseph so much he was put in charge of all of Egypt.

8When a famine (a shortage of food usually caused by a lack of rain) took place, Israel sent his sons (Joseph's brothers) to Egypt to buy food. The brothers appeared before Joseph, but they did not recognize him. 9Although Joseph recognized his brothers, he did not tell them who he was at first. Joseph provided food for his brothers, and 10later invited them to come and live in Egypt. Joseph promised he would not get even with his brothers for their actions. He told them, "I know you wanted to harm me, but God planned these things for good. God wanted me to save many lives."

Picture 8: (Exodus 1:1–4:31) 1Following Joseph's death and the death of the current Pharaoh, a new Pharaoh came to power in Egypt. This Pharaoh did not know about Joseph and all he had done. 2Pharaoh believed there were too many Israelites, so he made them slaves. He even ordered all the boy babies born to the Israelites (Hebrews) killed.

3During this time, a Hebrew woman had a son. 4For three months she hid her baby. 5When he became too big to hide, she put her son in a basket and told her daugher to place it in the Nile River. 6Pharaoh's daughter came to bathe in the river and found the basket. She paid the baby's mother to take care of him until the boy was older. 7When he was old enough, his mother took him to Pharaoh's daughter, 8who named him Moses and raised him as her son.

Later, Moses saw an Egyptian hit a Hebrew (an Israelite). 9Moses became angry and killed the Egyptian. 10For 40 years, Moses hid because he was afraid of what he had done. One day while Moses was tending his father-in-law's sheep, 11God spoke to him through a burning bush. God said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites leave Egypt." 12Moses made excuses as to why he could not obey God. God responded to Moses' excuses. 13Finally, Moses agreed to follow God's plan.

14Moses and his brother, Aaron, gathered all the elders (leaders) of the Israelites together and told them what God said. 15The people believed what Moses and Aaron said. They knew God had seen their suffering. 16The people bowed and worshiped God.

Picture 9: (Exodus 5:1–40:38)1Moses and Aaron talked with Pharaoh. They said to him, "The God of Israel says, 'Let My people go!' " 2Pharaoh said "No, the people cannot leave." He ordered the Israelites' work to be increased. 3The people blamed Moses for the added work. Moses complained to God. Once again, God promised Moses He would free the Israelites from Egypt.

God told Moses He would get Pharaoh's attention and he would allow the Israelites to leave. 4God sent 10 plagues, signs from God, including turning the water of the Nile River to blood, frogs, gnats, flies, death of livestock, boils (sores on people), hail, locusts, and darkness. Even after these nine plagues, Pharaoh would not allow the Israelites to leave. God had one more plague. 5Moses told the Israelites to sacrifice a lamb and to place some blood on the doorframes of their homes. 6That night, the firstborn son of every home without the blood would die. The Israelites obeyed and their sons lived, but the Egyptians' firstborn sons all died. This plague is known as the passover, because the death of the Israelites' sons was passed over.

7Pharaoh told Moses to take the Israelites and leave Egypt. The Egyptians gave them anything they wanted. 8After living in Egypt for 430 years, the Israelites left Egypt.

Throughout their journey, God took care of the Israelites. 9He parted the Red Sea so they could cross on dry land, killed Pharaoh's army when it chased after the Israelites, and provided everything the people needed.

10The Israelites were in the wilderness for a long time. 11They complained they were starving. God provided food called manna and water for them to eat and drink.

12When the Israelites reached Mount Sinai, God told Moses to say to the people, "You are my special people. If you do as I say, I will always take care of you." 13The people said they would do everything God said. 14God gave Moses the Ten Commandments to share with the people. Moses told the people about the Ten Commandments and other laws they must keep.
