Energy Exchange: Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade
• Certain hybrid renewable energy technologies: Pump storage hydro Wind Solar thermal
• Certain energy efficiency technologies:Waste heat recovery Demand limiting/peak shaving (chillers & water plants)
• Certain automation system elements: HVAC/DDC (Chillers, Boilers, AHU’s)Water/Wastewater SCADA(UMCS) Electric distribution/generation SCADA(UMCS) Some utility interfaces Building/activity sub‐metering
• Host site stakeholder engagement
7
What worked
Energy Exchange: Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade
• Certain Distributed generation technologies: Compressed air storage generation Bottoming cycle waste heat generation
• Certain automation system integrations: OEM wind turbine on‐board control system
• “Non‐ real time” utility information interface ultimately provided
8
What didn’t work
Energy Exchange: Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade
• Utility DR program participation with DRAS servers & DR contractors
• Non‐cost effective technologies (at the time): Battery storage PV solar
• High maintenance solutions• Some automated systems/processes Due to site union labor issues
• Production process/plant operation interfaces
9
What was considered but not implemented
Energy Exchange: Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade
• Some project participants did not really “play ball” as they had originally agreed to
• Some project participants had financial issues arise during the project
• State utility regulation changes during the course of the project
• Project must be a “living” solution Operations New technologies and programs Site mission requirements change Site/Program personnel change
