Two Ways of Thinking

• “When in Rome”

• adhere to the norms of the place of operation

• in other words do nothing

• LGBT+ people will feel need to pass for straight or cisgender

• bad for business

• Embassy

• implement LGBT+ supportive policies in offices

• in other words do something

• sometimes unavoidable

• but can be used as an excuse for not going further

The Ideal Way of Thinking

• The Advocate

• advocate for LGBT+ rights in the public sphere

• equal marriage

• respect for gender identity

• anti-discrimination laws

• “we are not neutral”

• We advocate

• at global level, always

• except where we feel we can’t, at local level

WE ARE NOT NEUTRAL

Challenges and Counter-Arguments

• “It’s against the law!”

• Challenge hard: It usually isn’t

• sex

• propaganda

• “People will be offended”

• Challenge hard: they usually won’t be

• people can be offended on behalf of others

• Outlook has a really useful “delete” button

• “It’s against our culture!”

• Challenge hard: most anti-LGBT+ states give leeway to global companies

More Challenges and Counter-Arguments

• “Our customers/clients won’t like it”

• Challenge: they usually understand

• And if some don’t, sometimes principles are not free

• “We don’t get involved in politics”

• There is the clearest difference between human rights and politics

• Is advocating for equal rights for all races “politics”?

• “What about straight people?”

• Do not dignify this with an answer

• Be personal

• They are talking about me, my spouse, my son, my sister
