    Processor 80286

In 1982, In tel produced the 80286

micropro cessor. This was the f irst Intel ch ip

that cou ld run al l the softw are that was

w ri t ten fo r i ts predecessor. The 286, as it was

known, was so ld to over 15 m i ll ion people

around the wo rld. It also d id no t take long ,

before there were a host o f new brand 286chips and som e no -name brand 286 chips to

    f lood the market .

Processor 80386In 1985, Intel buil t the revo lutio nary 386

m icropro cessor which was a 32 bi t chip that could

run mult ip le prog rams at the same t ime.

Apple produced the Apple Mack intosh wh ich was

the f i rs t compu ter to use a graphical user inter face

(GUI).A t the same time, Advanced Micro Devices were

also in compet it ion w ith Intel and were develop ing

variat ions of th e 386 m icropro cesso r. Soon , users

cou ld choo se between single speed and doub le

speed, much more memory and a var iety of hard

Microsoft launched Window s 3.0 in 1986 which

    Processor 80486

The rivalry between the various manufacturers,

brought about the 486 generation of computers.

The Intel 486 (TM) was the first processor to

offer a built-in math coprocessor whichspeeded up computing. Soon, the single speed

and double speed 486 processors were phased

out for the faster 486 DX -33 and the 486 DX-66.

As technology advanced at massive speeds,

the next phase of 486 allowed easierinstallation of hardware with plug and play Bios

and greater speed. The 486 DX2 was then

replaced by the superfast 486 DX4.

    Processor Pentium

The Intel Pentium processor was introduced in

1993. This was a big leap from the 486 and was a

586 chip with a new name. Initially, the Pentium

chip gave many problems the main one beingoverheating which was solved by placing a fan

over the chip. The Pentium was designed to

include speech, sound and photographic images.

The CD-Rom development also played a big part

in the life of the Pentium.

Processor PentiumIIIntel launched the Pentium II processor in

1997. The Pentium II incorporated the

MMX(TM) technology and was designed to

process video, audio and graphics moreeffectively. Its high speed capabilities

brought the concept of "now" technology.

It is able to turn itself on when another

computer wishes to access it and when inshutdown mode, will automatically turn

    itself off.

Processor PentiumIIIThe Intel Pentium III proc esso r o f 1999, was a

jump to the nex t level by In tel to try and get away

from AMD, the other com pany that produces

pro cesso rs. Intel jumped to the Pentium III at

speeds of 450 MHz and 500 Mhz wh ich left AMDflatfooted fo r a short whi le. The Intel Pentium III

was designed to run on the Internet and has bu i l t

in automatic securi ty features. It also has as a

design feature, 3D capabi l i t ies on th e proc essor.

A few mon ths after the release of the Pentium III,

AMD had the answer - the AMD K6 IIIP 3D Now

wh ich performs on a par with the Pent ium III bu t

is on ly a quarter of the price.
