Session 2 – Research Techniques?
Session 2 Aims & Outcomes:
• Aims: To explore the research requirements of the assignment.
• To explore new ways of analysing design examples.
• To explore audience considerations and the affect this may have on individual design work.
• Outcomes: you will understand the research requirements of the assignment brief.
• You will understand a more in-depth process of formally analysing your research results.
• You will have begun to carry our purposeful supportive research based on assignment requirements.
• You will understand the audience considerations important when designing for a client.
Research
What do we need to research?
• Share your ideas with the group:
• Graphic Design styles; history, designers, periods
• Influential Graphic Designers of 20th & 21st Century; see suggested research
• The materials, techniques & processes used in different styles and designer work; this needs to be substantial and linked to your experimental research.
• The visual elements of Graphic Design; how do chosen styles and designers use these?
• The visual principles of Graphic Design; find out what you can but we will be investigating the principles
• Page layout conventions in Graphic Design; how do styles and designers use these?
• Typography styles and types; how do styles and designers use these?
Research Techniques:
• Up to now we have used describe, reflect, & formally analyse.
• To evolve our research techniques further we need to adopt the following steps:
• Evaluation – what are your thoughts/feelings about the design/artwork, and why is this?
• Subject – what is the image about, how do you know this?
• Elements – formally analyse the elements and layout.
• Materials – what materials and techniques have been use, and why?
• Intention – what is the designer/artist saying/expressing to the audience, and how?
• Opinion – what is your opinion of the design/artwork, and why?
• Comparison – what can you compare the design to?
• Relevance – how relevant is the design to you, how do you plan to use your findings?
