Table 6. Categories of BP in Adults*
BP Category SBP DBP
Normal <120 mm Hg and <80 mm Hg
Elevated 120–129 mm Hg and <80 mm Hg
Hypertension
Stage 1 130–139 mm Hg or 80–89 mm Hg
Stage 2 ≥140 mm Hg or ≥90 mm Hg
*Individuals with SBP and DBP in 2 categories should be designated to the higher BP category. BP indicates blood pressure (based on an average of ≥2 careful readings obtained on ≥2 occasions, as detailed in
Section 4); DBP, diastolic blood pressure; and SBP systolic blood pressure.

We defined potential confounders on the basis of the following data:
-use of selected drugs with suggested photosensitizing properties, including oral retinoids, topical retinoids,
tetracycline, macrolides, aminoquinolines, amiodarone, and methoxypsoralene
-use of drugs with suggested antineoplastic effects, including aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and
statins
-composite measures of hospital diagnoses and disease-specific drugs defining medical histories of diabetes,
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic renal insufficiency, or conditions associated with heavy alcohol
consumption
-Charlson comorbidity index scores

“Given the considerable use of HCTZ worldwide and the morbidity associated with NMSC, a causal
association between HCTZ use and NMSC risk would have significant public health implications. The
use of HCTZ should be carefully considered, as several other antihypertensive agents with similar
indications and efficiency are available, but without known associations with skin cancer “
Journal of Internal Medicine, 2017, 282; 322–331
“The high odds ratios, evidence of specificity for HCTZ use compared to use of other diuretics or
nondiuretic antihypertensives, and the plausible biological mechanism of photosensitivity support a
causal relationship between HCTZ use and risk of lip cancer”
“Given the considerable use of HCTZ worldwide, such numbers and attributable proportions are not
negligible when drugs comparable in indications and efficacy to HCTZ are available”

HIDROCLOROTIAZIDA: EL USO CONTINUO Y PROLONGADO EN EL TIEMPO PODRÍA AUMENTAR EL
RIESGO DE CÁNCER CUTÁNEO NO MELANOCÍTICO
Fecha de publicación: 9 de octubre de 2018
Categoría: MEDICAMENTOS DE USO HUMANO, SEGURIDAD Referencia: MUH (FV), 13 /2018
riesgo tras tratamientos prolongados.
Aparece asociado a

HDL CHOLESTEROL – A MOVING TARGET
Elevated HDL-C is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes M. Allard-Ratick, J. Khambhati, M. Topel, P. Sandesara, L. Sperling, A. Quyyumi.
Emory University, Cardiology, Atlanta, United States of America
Background: Previous studies have shown reduced cardiovascular (CV) risk with
increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. However, at elevated
HDL-C levels (>60mg/dl), its atheroprotective functions, such as cholesterol
efflux and anti-oxidant capacity, may be impaired. The association between
high levels of HDL-C and adverse outcomes remains unclear.
Purpose: To study the relationship between elevated HDL-C levels (>60mg/dl)
and adverse CV outcomes in an at-risk population.
Methods: Participants included 5,965 individuals (mean age 63.3―12.4 years,
35% female, 23% African American) Individuals were also stratified by HDL-C categories
Conclusion: Elevated HDL-C levels are paradoxically associated with an increased risk of adverse CV events in
an at-risk population, suggesting dysfunctional HDL and impaired atheroprotection.
