Legacy Gardens is open for funeral care. This new, and special, Legacy Funerals venue at Papamoa features a memorial garden, a 200-seat funeral chapel and smaller room options, plus full catering facilities. It is also the only funeral venue in the Bay to include a columbarium - a place for the respectful storage of urns holding cremated remains. Legacy Gardens - on the corner of Ashley Place and Te Okuroa Drive, Papamoa - has been designed to offer a sense of peace and tranquillity. It will add to Legacy’s already impressive venue options. Legacy Funerals currently operate facilities at Tauranga Park on Pyes Pa Road and Woodhill on Grange Road. Legacy Funerals is owned by Legacy Trust, which has gifted more than $2.4 million back to the local community - generosity that is only possible because of the choice families have made in using Legacy Funerals.

How it all started in 2011

In 2011 a group of mates went to Fiji to build a medical dispensary. We were inspired to see how the power of community could achieve so much in a short amount of time.It was amazing to see that by working together we could make such a positive difference in the local Fijian community. This was the start of our journey and many conversations about how we could use this same power of community to make positive changes to our neighbourhoods here in New Zealand. The beginning of Neighbourhood ProjectsThe Fiji trip left us asking “Is it possible that people in our own communities could work together to make our local neighbourhoods a better place to be?”

About Good Neighbour

By meeting practical needs, could we build better relationships, and begin the journey of transforming our communities through simple acts of generosity and kindness? Well we think it can, and so the vision of the Good Neighbour Trust was born.A small group of us began to meet to dream and brainstorm about what this could look like.We decided to form a charitable trust called Good Neighbour. This was an undertaking that took over a year to complete. The beginning of Food RescueWhat started as a very practical organisation that was focused on meeting needs through projects soon branched out to include distributing food good enough to eat (that otherwise would be going to waste in land fill) to charities.

A dynamic couple in our group, John and Jackie Paine began investigating this concept.A trip to Wellington to look at a food rescue organisation called Kaibosh was the catalyst and Good Neighbour Food Rescue became a reality. Lavina Good, a community minded person, independently contacted Kaibosh who put her in contact with the Paines. The trio began working together to move

Good Neighbour Food Rescue forward. Next came a period of assessing the need of community organisations and the availability of food in a feasibility study funded by the “Working together more fund.” Early in 2014 a trial of picking up food then sorting it ready for community organisations to pick up, quickly led to the establishment of Good Neighbour Food Rescue. Food Rescue is growing rapidly and has huge potential and is now the second strand of Good Neighbour. The beginning of Community GardensThe other area of Good Neighbour came about when we met Al and Anne Gourley. They had started an organisation called “Lets Get Growing” to set up community gardens where neighbours rent a small garden and grow veges and make friends as they work together in this communal garden.

“Lets Get Growing” needed a charitable trust to be a part of, we decided this was a good fit for Good Neighbour and a new partnership was formed. This became the third strand of Good Neighbour

ANZAC DAY Anzac Day is a national day of commemoration observed on 25 April each year. It commemorates those who died serving New Zealand during war while honouring returned and current servicemen and women, past and present.

25 April marks the day in 1915 when Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Gallipoli in Turkey, the site of New Zealand’s first major battle of World War One with the loss of over 2,700 New Zealand soldiers.

The Anzac Day dawn service is a moving rite of passage for many kiwis. Every year, thousands of Kiwis and Australians - young and old - attend services in their local communities. Some even travel to Gallipoli. Since the first commemorative services in 1916, Anzac Day has evolved into the observance we know today, with Kiwis and Australians of all ages attending services and events across the world, from dawn until dusk. In the afternoon we relax, spend time with our loved ones and reflect.

We honour the Anzac values of courage, compassion, camaraderie, and commitment and a time we depended on each other as brothers.

Sometimes we need a little more support than family or friends can offer. Whether it’s post-operative convalescence, palliative or general care at home, deciding what support is needed and where to find it can be challenging. The staff at New Zealand’s longest running private homecare provider, Miranda Smith Homecare, know how difficult these decisions can be.

Owner, Miranda Smith says: “People may be in crisis when they contact us, or they may require our services to assist with and plan their recovery from illness or injury. Whatever the reason, we believe choosing the right support is critical. Peace of mind comes with knowing the correct care is in place, in the familiar surroundings of home with family and friends nearby. This dramatically impacts recovery and helps to maintain independence”.

Miranda Smith Homecare offers a highly professional, caring and above all else, trustworthy service. Staff have the experience to ensure the stress of requiring in-home assistance doesn’t become a burden for those needing such support. When at-home care is your preferred choice, contact Miranda Smith Homecare, New Zealand’s most experienced private homecare provider.

Easter and Sweet TreatsIt’s hard to talk about Easter food without acknowledging a few historical traditions. The foods we associate with this time of year have Christian and Pagan symbolism. Why do we traditionally eat certain foods on certain days?

Hot cross buns and various breads are eaten on Good Friday and Easter eggs on Easter Sunday. Mix that in with a good measure of 20th century commercialism, all manner of cute stuff like chicks and Easter bunnies, and we end up with a blur of something that probably, to many, means a long weekend full of sugar-loaded treats.

Whatever your beliefs, Easter is often a time for family and friends to get together. Here are some suggestions that take into account the historical and traditional meanings of Easter and acknowledge the celebration of sharing food with family and friends.

Spiced buns to be eaten on Good Friday were institutionalised in Tudor England by law. They could also be eaten at Christmas or funerals. The symbolism of the cross is obvious in Christian belief but also had Greek, Roman and Saxon references.

It is one of few breads that we only eat at this time of the year. Although we eat them before and after Good Friday, they are quite unique in their time of offering.

EASTER - 14th - 18th April

Hot Cross Buns INGREDIENTS:For the Buns• 500g white bread flour• ½ teaspoon of salt• 2 heaped tsp mixed spice• 50g caster sugar• 50g butter chopped into cubes• 200g mixed dried fruit• 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast• 200ml milk• 2 eggs

For the crosses & glaze• 3 tbsp plain flour• Honey or golden syrup for brushing

Method1. Tip the flour into a bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice and sugar.2. Rub in the butter with your fingertips. Stir in the dried fruit, then sprinkle over the yeast and stir in. Gently warm the milk so it is hot, but still cool enough to put your finger in for a couple of seconds. Beat with the eggs, then pour into the dried ingredients.3. Using a blunt knife, mix the ingredients to a moist dough, then leave to soak for 5 mins. Take out of the bowl and cut the dough into 8 equal pieces.4. Shape the dough into buns on a floured surface. Space apart on a baking sheet, cover loosely with cling film, then leave in a warm place until half again in size. This will take 45 mins - 1 hr 15 mins, depending on how warm the room is.5. When the buns are risen, heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Mix the flour with 2 tbsp water to make a paste. Pour into a plastic food bag and make a nick in one of the corners. Pipe crosses on top of each bun.6. Bake for 12 - 15 mins until risen and golden. Trim the excess cross mixture from the buns , then brush all over with honey or golden syrup. The buns will keep fresh for a day. After that they are best toasted and served with butter.

Falls PreventionA fall at any age can be dangerous, but falls become increasingly common and far more likely to cause injury after the age of 55.

Approximately 1 in 3 people over the age of 65 will fall in any one year. Of these, 4% end up in hospital and 1% suffer a hip fracture.Falls can have devastating consequences for older adults, particularly those living alone. Along with serious injury or fractures, people face a possible loss of independence and a knock to their confidence too. Falls are also the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for both males and females aged over 75 years. Some people, especially those who have had a fall, restrict what they do because of a fear of falling. While this sounds sensible, reduced activity actually puts you at a greater risk of falling. This is because it causes you to lose muscle strength and coordination. So, it is important to keep up

activities you enjoy, as safely as possible - ‘the more you do, the more you can do’.

Why are falls more common with age?Health conditions that can increase your risk of falling may be hard to notice by yourself. Regular check-ups with your doctor are a good way to spot them.

Factors involved in why falls occur include:• poor leg strength and impaired balance• side effects from your medications• other medical conditions• eyesight problems• nutritional deficiencies• hazards around the home environment.

Tips to prevent fallsEach year about one-third of all New Zealanders over age 65 will fall. Many of these falls result in broken bones. You can play a role in preventing falls. Look after yourself by:

1. Exercising regularly• Lack of exercise can lead to weak legs, which increases the chances of falling.• Any increased exercise is helpful. Start with 5 minutes a day and build up.• Exercise programmes that increase strength and improve balance, such as Steady As You Go are very good.• Check with your doctor first before starting a strenuous exercise programme.

2. Being mindful of medications• Medications, or combinations of medications, may have side effects, which can increase the risk of falls.• Have your doctor or pharmacist review all your medications for any side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness.• Ask if there are any that can be reduced or stopped.• As we get older and need more medications, taking them correctly gets harder.• Work out a system to make sure you take the right tablets at the right time.

3. Keeping your vision sharp• Poor vision can make it harder to get around safely.• Have your eyes checked every year and wear glasses or contact lenses with the right

prescription strength.

4. Removing hazards at home• About half of all falls happen at home.• Make your home safer by reducing tripping hazards and clutter, adding hand-rails and improving lighting.

Personal medical alarmsPeople at risk of falls, or those who have had a fall in the past, may find it useful to have a medical alarm. These can make it easier to remain independent and continue living in your own home, especially if you live alone. Medical alarms are usually worn as a pendant or wristband, which can be activated to call for assistance if you have a fall and require medical help but are unable to get to the phone. This is a safeguard for people wanting to continue with everyday life around the home and garden. It can also offer peace of mind for family members about your ongoing safety.

What to do if you have a fallIf you have a fall at home: • Stay calm and decide whether to try to get up.If you can get up: • Bend your knees up, roll onto your side, then push up onto all-fours.• Crawl towards a sturdy chair.• Use this support to help get yourself seated.• Rest at any time, if necessary, and then try again.

Medical alarms, keeping the phone near ground level and giving friends a spare key are useful precautions you can make in case one day you cannot get up from a fall.

Exercises to prevent falls• Regular exercise is important in preventing falls. Benefits include: improved balance, muscle strength and flexibility; stronger bones; more energy; better sleep; and better control of blood pressure, blood sugar and weight. General fitness can be improved by walking for 30 minutes most days of the week (or three 10-minute walks). It should make you breathe harder, but you should still be able to speak easily.• Programmes designed specifically for balance and muscle strength have been shown to reduce the number of falls and injuries resulting from falls by between 30% and 50%.

Tauranga City Libraries has a new website! A small team of librarians had the daunting task of working on the new site for a few months and completed it with the help of the TCC Web Team. The website is fresher, simpler and it is a lot easier to navigate. There are a range of accessibility options at the top right-hand corner of the site for those who need them. There will be a few issues that need to be ironed out, so please bear with us if you come across anything unusual.

Our Adult Colouring groups continue to grow in popularity and we are now introducing a group at Greerton Library. These groups meet once a month to colour-in and chat and to share their creations. It’s a lot of fun and a very relaxing hobby. Details for the three colouring clubs are below.

If you’re on a low income, you may be able to get a rebate to help pay the rates on your home. A rebate of up to $610 is available based on your income, dependants and rates bill. To find out if you qualify for a rates rebate, visit the Rates Rebate website, www.ratesrebates.govt.nz You then apply to your local council for the rebate. When you complete the application form you’ll need to include your income details. In general, if you’re receiving the standard rates of NZ Super, most councils won’t need any more information. In some cases, they may need more details so Senior Services at the Ministry of Social Development will need to give you information to pass on to them.

How to apply You can pick up an application form from the Customer Service Centre at 91 Willow Street or your local library, or download one from the Rates Rebate website, www.ratesrebates.govt.nz If you’re receiving a standard rate of NZ Super, in most cases you don’t need proof of income.

Coffee & Cake (and conversation)The March meeting was well attended and it was really good to see so many new members. It was also a delight to welcome Kim Young back into the group after an extended absence - she amazed everyone by getting from Bureta to Greerton on her mobility scooter - a distance of 26km round trip!Congratulations to Ian, Dick Colin and Lesley who were the winning team for the Word Builder quiz. There was lots of enthusiasm for the quiz and we’ll definitely have another one later in the year. There was also lots of interest in the “Soup and Crackers” meeting for July which we’ll incorporate as a mid-winter Christmas.

Left to right: Lesley, Colin, Pat, Jim, Ian and Dick.

Free flu shots in Unichem and Life Pharmacies for pregnant women and people 65 years and olderFor the first time, people aged 65 and older will have access to free flu vaccinations at selected Unichem & Life community pharmacies across New Zealand from April 1, following an announcement from Pharmac.

Professional Services, Alison Van Wyk says, “We’re always supportive of improving convenient access to health care and advice for everyone in New Zealand and Pharmac’s latest announcement will enable us to work alongside our medical colleagues to better protect the most vulnerable people in our communities from the flu.”

Influenza, commonly called the flu, can be a serious illness to people of all ages. Over 1.2 million New Zealanders are vaccinated annually and in 2016, figures showed 67 per cent of over 65 year olds and 18 per cent of pregnant women received a flu vaccination.

“There remains a large proportion of New Zealanders who are not getting the flu vaccination and who could benefit from accessing it.”

Van Wyk says. “People with certain chronic medical conditions such as asthma and some cardiovascular conditions should continue to access the vaccine free from their local medical centre or GP and will be referred by their pharmacist.”

Contact or call into your local Life Pharmacy for your free flu shot.
