SERVING THE MARGINALIZEDJOE WHITE
MARCH 6TH
WHO IS IN THE ROOM?
2
WHAT IN YOUR CITY CONTRIBUTES TO PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY?
3
WHAT BRINGS YOU TO THIS WORK?
4
THIS IS MY “WHY”5
FUEL FOR MY “WHY”6
WHY ARE WE SEEING THESE RESULTS?
7
ECONOMIC FACTORS? GENERATIONAL POVERTY?
8
ACCORDING TO RESEARCH…
“Black boys raised in America, even in the wealthiest families and living
in some of the most well-to-do neighborhoods, still earn less in
adulthood than white boys with similar backgrounds.”

WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OUR KIDS?
• Understanding Wealth?
• Investing?
• Entrepreneurship?
• Real Estate?
• Assets vs. Liabilities?
• Retirement, 401k, Index Investing?
• Understanding culture?
• White-dominant cultural norms?
• Assimilation vs. Resistance?
• Civic Engagement?
• The Fundamentals of Democracy?
• Power?
13
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM?
14
TO PREPARE KIDS FOR A JOB
• In a capitalistic society, too many actors have no urgency to teach kids what they need to
know to win
• As such, wealth is protected for the elite few
• If we want to break the cycle of poverty, including an explicit lesson on managing
resources is imperative
• Eliminating racism and racial bias in our system requires more diverse peoples who are
ready to assume leadership
• Use data wisely!
15
THE DATA IS TELLING A COMPELLING STORY!
16
ARE YOU DATA-DRIVEN?
17
OR ARE YOU VALUES-DRIVEN?
18
… OR ARE YOU VALUES-DRIVEN AND INFORMED BY DATA?
19
IN ORDER TO MOST EFFECTIVELY SERVE THE MARGINALIZED, WE MUST BE CLEAR ON OUR VALUES AND USE THEM TO EXTERMINATE BIAS, RACISM, AND CULTURAL BIAS
20
LEADERS: VALUES ARE ONLY VALUABLE WHEN THEY ARE CLEARLY DEFINED, RESOURCED, AND INCENTIVIZED.
21
WHAT DO YOU VALUE?
what makes the good society?
22
1 This document was prepared using language from two sources: The Executive’s Compass: Business and the Good Society by James O’Toole; and David
Levy’s book review for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis: https://www.minneapolisfed.org/publications/the-region/the-executives-compass-business-
and-the-good-society
HERE’S WHAT I VALUE23
JW
LET’S TEST YOUR VALUES
• Should education be compulsory?
• How many of you think vaccines should be mandatory for all American kids?
• Should everyone be mandated to wear a seatbelt?
• Should judges use decision-making tools/frameworks when levying sentences?
• Should educators who work in urban centers also live in urban centers?
24
WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO GIVE UP TO ENSURE THAT THE NEXT GENERATION EXPERIENCES A MORE EQUITABLE SOCIETY THAN YOU DID?
25
ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE SOME ELEMENT OF PERSONAL LIFE AND DESTINY TO FOCUS ON GENERATIONAL LEGACY?
26
TO SERVE EFFECTIVELY
• Leaders are responsible for establishing the compass that the school or org operates by.
• Use this compass to expose racism and implicit bias.
• We need your leadership pushing your spheres of influence. We need you sitting on
boards of organizations. We need you engaging with civics.
• Authentically educate students about what is possible- even when it seems impossible.

THANK YOU
