‘Horses go to Rio’ with this year’s Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival
The streets of Scone will be decked out Carnivale-style this May when the Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival takes place from 5 – 15 May. The theme for this year’s festival - Horses go to Rio - has just been unveiled. It’s hoped the theme will bring a new sense of fun and colour to the event. “We really wanted to up the ante this year and do something a bit crazy that everyone can get involved with,” said Horse Festival committee president, Lee Watts. “We can’t wait to see how businesses decorate their shopfronts and the horse parade should be a sight to behold with dancers and feathers making their way down Kelly Street.”
The business with the best-decorated shopfront will win a free advertisement in next year’s official program valued at $880.
To find out more about the event log on to www.sconehorsefestival.com.au/ or follow it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Thinking business beyond the bypassMany Scone business people are concerned about the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) current design for the bypass and overpass.Forty people attended a meeting about the bypass plans last week, organised by Upper Hunter Shire Council and the Scone Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Wayne Bedggood encouraged people to make their views known to RMS by the deadline of 19 February 2016.
Council and the Chamber are in agreement that the bypass presents both challenges and opportunities, that the current RMS design needed better access to and from Scone, and that research was needed on the likely impact on local businesses.
“The new bypass plans from RMS leave much to be desired and I think that, by the end of Council’s excellent presentation, all of those present agreed,” Chamber President Ben Wyndham said.
Concerns were also raised at the meeting about how much businesses relied on passing trade and how much the bypass would impact them.
Council and the Chamber are going to work with local businesses to gather data on the importance of passing trade. Select businesses will be asked to monitor and measure turnover over several weeks to gauge the relative importance of passing trade.
At last week’s meeting some Scone business owners stated that passing trade made up 50% to 80% of their business at certain times of the year.

Swinging into plans for the Scone Golf CourseOver 40 Scone Golf Club members attended Upper Hunter Shire Council’s public information session to discuss the proposed plans for the Scone Golf Course redesign project this week along with the design team Shape On It Pty Ltd and Scone Sporties.
Image: Mark Wylie, Harley Kruse, Rod Hinwoods and Hugh Lester from Shape On It Pty Ltd and Upper Hunter Shire Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Alan Fletcher hosted a public information session this week to discuss the plans of the Scone Golf Course redesign project.
Harley Kruse, Rod Hinwoods, Mark Wylie and Hugh Lester from Shape On It Pty Ltd and Council’s Director of Infrastructure Services Alan Fletcher presented the plans for the golf course. The redesign is necessary because of the planned bypass for Scone.
The majority of the crowd thought the plans were positive with some suggestions for different number of pars and lengths for the fairways.
Mr Alan Fletcher said that all suggestions raised have been recorded and will be taken on board.
“Shape On It Pty Ltd has now gone back to the office to see if they can incorporate the suggestions raised at last night’s meeting into their plans.
“Although we did receive quite a few suggestions at the meeting, Council is still seeking community views on the draft redesign for Scone Golf Course with written comments invited by Friday 12 February 2016,” Mr Fletcher said.
The design can be viewed at Council offices in Scone, Merriwa and Murrurundi, at Scone Sporties Clubhouse or on Council’s website www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au.
Mr Alan Fletcher reminded those who attended that the redesigned course could not be an improved version of the current course, but would be of a standard comparable to the current course with 18 tees and nine greens, and similar course distances and slope rating.
The golf course redesign is needed as the Roads and Maritime Services proposed New England Highway bypass of Scone has a planned route through the existing golf course affecting holes 1, 4, 6, 7, 9 and the practise range. It does not involve changes to the Scone Sporties Clubhouse.
Roads and Maritime is funding the redesign of the course which is expected to take around 40 weeks to complete once construction starts. It is intended that the current course will be kept open during construction of the new course.
The site for the new course is vacant land owned by Council, on the southern side of the existing course and the proposed bypass. The Scone Golf Course is managed by Scone RSL Club Ltd who own the clubhouse and surrounding land and lease the current golf course from Council.
Under the draft design, access to the course from the clubhouse and car park will be under the bypass bridge over Parsons Gully near the tee for the current first hole.
Please provide written comments by Friday 12 February 2016 to: Council offices in Scone, Merriwa or Murrurundi, fax to 02 6545 2671
Post to General Manager, Upper Hunter Shire Council, at PO Box 208, Scone 2337.

Scone-bred horse’s second world titleScone gelding Zin Zan Eddie recently won the Carrington at Randwick on Saturday January 23. The six year old is one of many good performers to come out of Stuart Ramsey’s Turangga Stud in the Segenhoe Valley. Another of those is Able Friend, the Hong Kong superstar who has earned so much respect he is the most highly world-rated performer produced in the Hunter Valley.
Mr Ramsey has owned Turangga Stud for less than a decade. The 2009 son of Shamardal by Giant’s Causeway was assessed as one of the three best performers four and up in the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings sponsored by Switzerland-based clockmakers Longines at the end of the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

King of the Ranges supports Indigenous stockmenTwo Indigenous stockmen from the Gulf of Carpentaria will make their way to Murrurundi later this month for the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge.
It’s part of a partnership between the King of the Ranges committee and Lawn Hill & Riversleigh Pastoral Holding Company designed to help Indigenous stockmen pick up skills that will further their career. Gerald Aplin and Peter Jupiter will spend some time picking up stockman skills with local committee members before they put them to the test.
Gerald Aplin completed the program last year, but it will be Peter Jupiter’s first time competing in the event. Mr Jupiter has worked at Lawn Hill for 2 years and head stockman there for the past year.
He will be introduced to some of the required KOTR Challenge skills such as using a cattle dog to work stock, packing and saddling a packhorse and cutting targets with a stockwhip whilst riding at speed.
Bonding with borrowed horses and dogs will be an added test, but both these young men are gifted with natural ability, balance and reflexes and enjoy their work as stockmen.
Don’t miss all the action from 26 – 28 February at Murrurundi.
For further information visit www.kingoftheranges.com.au or contact 0419 207 910.
Image: Gerald Aplin, 20 years of age, has built on his knowledge and skills gained from competing at KOTR in 2015 and looks forward to the event this month.

Immunity in the community By Peta Gay Railton [pictured]
Pet Medical is proud to launch Immunity in the Community initiative. Our aim is to rid this area of Parvovirus in 3 years. Parvovirus is a very contagious disease that can kill puppies. The virus is hardy and can survive in the soil for up to 12 months. It’s often carried around on peoples shoes and clothing. Unvaccinated puppies will become ill and will die if left untreated. Adult dogs may not become unwell BUT WILL SHED VIRUS. A gram of faeces can contain enough virus to infect 1000 dogs. Vaccinated dogs do NOT shed the virus so the virus will die after 12 months.
Puppies need 3 initial vaccinations, 6 to 8 weeks, 10 to 12 weeks and 14 to 16 weeks. Adult dogs only require one vaccination a year. To encourage vaccination we are offering a free vaccination with a consultation. If you are struggling to afford vaccination you can take part in our Sunday vaccination clinic held at our Muswellbrook branch. Please call Muswellbrook on 65411555 to make an appointment between 12 and 2pm. Sunday clinic vaccinations are only $30.
If everyone vaccinated their dog, Parvovirus will have nowhere to go and will die in the soil after a year. Lets get rid of Parvo, vaccinate your dog.
