Highly skilled surgeon, staff help patient survive near-fatal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

When Terry Traina of McHenry suffered a near-fatal ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in February of 2011, Centegra Hospital-McHenry’s Associates and Dr. Richard Lind provided the lifesaving surgery and care he needed to overcome the odds. Traina became part of the small percentage of people who survive the surgery, and he said the care he received in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit was the reason he is still alive today.

“My family told me the nurses would sit by my bed and talk in my ear,” Traina said. “For three and a half weeks they were on high alert.”

When Traina went home he began therapy at the Centegra Neuro-Rehabilitation Center to regain skills he lost because of his illness. The patience, compassion and support he received from his therapists brought him through some of his darkest moments and helped him make a complete recovery.

Centegra Brings Robotic Surgery to McHenry County

A team of highly skilled physicians and Centegra Associates performed McHenry County’s first robotic surgery July 6, 2011. The team used the newest daVinci Si HD Surgical System to perform a prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) on a 56-year-old patient. The purchase of the $2 million robot was just one way Centegra fulfills its mission to bring the latest technology to the people of the region. Robotic surgery appeals to physicians and to patients who want the latest surgical innovations to treat their conditions. Robotic surgery helps physicians perform minimally invasive surgery so their patients have fewer complications, experience less blood loss and get out of the hospital more quickly. Patients enjoy more mobility immediately after surgery because procedures are performed through four to five incisions, each which is less than a centimeter in length.

Although urology was the first specialty to utilize Centegra Health System’s robotic surgery capabilities, other specialties are now exploring the ways robotic surgery can advance the care they provide to patients in greater McHenry County. Centegra continues to work with physicians and Associates to bring the most advanced technology to the people who live in the communities we serve.

Patient Collects Pearls on Road to Healthy Living

Since Centegra began its Pearls for Wellness program March 1, 2011, Debbie Bielinski has collected more than 44 pearls for her efforts to become healthier. She is one of thousands of greater McHenry County women who have received pearls through Centegra’s Pearls for Wellness program. More than 20,000 pearls have been distributed throughout the county to promote women’s health.

The program encourages women to make wellness and disease prevention a priority. Centegra celebrates women’s commitment to good health by offering a pearl for taking part in a program offered at Centegra. These programs include an annual physical and annual pap smear with Centegra Physician Care, classes at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center, select physician lectures and more.

“When I heard about the pearl program I was excited about it,” Debbie said. “I thought it was fantastic. Every pearl is going to represent an hour of working out and an hour of getting closer to my goal. My plan is to continue collecting the pearls for a necklace, a bracelet and an ankle bracelet.”

Heart Screenings Provided to Local Teens

Diane Zientz was aware of the recent cases of heart trouble in teenagers. When she heard that Centegra Health System was offering heart screenings, she decided to get her 13-year-old son and athlete, Jared, screened. According to the American Heart Association, one out of every 9,000 teenagers dies each year from an undetected heart problem. After follow-up tests, Jared Zientz’s heart defect was revealed as rheumatic carditis.

Diane said that while the result of a sporting event seems important in an athlete’s mind, it doesn’t outweigh the potential risk to his or her health. She said knowing Centegra offers this screening makes her more comfortable with Jared out there playing.

“I’m so glad that we did this test. I wish everybody would do it,” Diane said.

Centegra Health System in the only health system in the county that offers echocardiogram (ECHO) heart screenings designed for teens 13 to 18. An ECHO heart screening is an ultrasound of the heart and can help detect heart defects and abnormalities, even when no symptoms are present.

Illnesses Detected, Lives Saved

American Community Bank Chief Executive Officer Charie Zanck is proud of the wellness efforts put forth by her employees who serve in four different locations throughout McHenry County. More than 70 percent of those bankers have participated in Centegra’s Worksite Wellness Program, and that’s a number that has steadily increased each of the last three years.

Zanck said through the program’s health risk assessments, wellness screenings and lunch and learn educational events, cancer and other illnesses have been detected and lives have been saved. Important blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels have also been lowered.

Because Centegra Health System and American Community Bank are committed to the wellness of our community, these bankers have learned to live healthy lifestyles through nutrition, portion control, exercise, aerobics and much more.

Centegra Health System’s Integrated Delivery Model features an interdisciplinary approach to healthcare that promotes collaboration between physicians, Centegra Associates, patients and their families. Our healthcare providers work as a team to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

We responsibly plan and implement community-based care from prevention and wellness to recovery and rehabilitation programs. In the past year, Centegra has continued to improve the way we provide care to the community.

Examples include:• Centegra’s employed physician group expanded to meet the community’s needs to include chiropractic, endocrinology, geriatric, hospitalist, immediate care, wound care and other specialty services.

• Centegra announced the expansion of our Sleep Services Department to include six new beds at Centegra Sleep Disorders Clinic-Algonquin. The expansion comes as a partnership with the former Alternative Sleep Disorders Center-Ltd.

• Centegra also expanded its services by partnering with the Center for Neurology, located in Crystal Lake. The Center for Neurology is now part of Centegra Physician Care.

Compassionate donors are critical in supporting today’s health programs and services that may not be funded in any other way. Centegra Health System’s commitment to caring for the health and wellness of all the members of our community is clearly evident in the millions of dollars of care provided regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.

What’s more, Centegra invests millions of dollars in capital improvements to facilities, equipment and technology upgrades to keep the level of programs and services equal to academic medical centers and large city hospitals. A portion of the funding for those improvements comes from generous donors to Centegra Health System Foundation.

Centegra Health System Foundation raises funds to support the goals of clinical excellence, superior service and promoting wellness for the greater McHenry County area. Through fundraising, special events and stewardship and by embracing donor passion for superior health care, the foundation works to provide the health system with the essential financial resources needed to support its strategic goals .
