This week we will be back at the Country Club and the program is:
Pappajohn Center—Judy Eyles
Located in Iowa State University’s Research Park, the Pappajohn Center is the catalyst that
brings together the people and ideas necessary for launching and growing successful enterprises.
Whether the undertaking is a student initiated enterprise, a new small business, a high technology
start-up, or a corporate spin-off, the Pappajohn Center provides assistance and resources to aid
the development process and support the entire launch of a new venture.

Program was Gift Wrap 401: Fun and Unusual by Mike Miller, Geri Derner and volunteers
Before the meeting started Mike had Cynthia open a large long package which was built from many
smaller boxes and it contained an United States Flag so we could have one at our meeting.
Cynthia then lead the business meeting and Bill Boon had us sing a redition of Shoo Fly Pie and
Apple Pan Dowdy.
The program started with Mike handing out head dresses to the committee members in attendance
as chair Deb Russell was Santa, Geri Deri received the Top Elf, Mike And Maeann Unser received
Deer Antlers and Lynell Dougherty was the Snow Queen.
Program Cont:
Being Anne Schmidt’s actual birthday. She got the “honor” of opening what she discovered was a 12
layer “Onion Package” Mike calls it this because there are many layers to open like an onion and
each layer is another package for us to wrap and charge for so the one package in a mini worked it
was up to a extra large with 10 other packages inside.
As she worked on the Onion Package, Neal Dietz was volunteered by the members to open another
large box which contained a pair of hiking sticks in another what Mike calls a “Frankenbox” - a box
made up of a lot of other interconnected boxes.
As she still worked on the Onion Package, Tom Randall was volunteered to open the “Broken Down”
gift set which consisted of a Light bulb good to go into a stocking, a lamp shade which the light bulb
connected to and a box containing the lamp base which was in a two box Frankenbox. So this one
gift broke down into 3 packages for us to wrap.
Once she got to the center Anne found a Twenty dollar bill surrounded by 5 One dollar bills which
she donated to the gift wrap committee. She said it was worth all the time it took to open.
Always try to get the item into a square or rectangular box so it is easy to wrap. Always use tissue
paper to protect the item from damage inside the box and it makes the opening of the box more of a
surprise to then have to take out the tissue paper which if a lot is needed then there is an upcharge
for materials.
Mike then gave a demonstration on choose the right width of paper (the one that come closest to
reaching a little over 1/2 the distance around the package), how to measure the paper length
(measure one and a little less than 1/4 around the package) so you have good overlap and can fold
to make a nice seam on the bottom of the package. A ribbon and a nametage are also included in
the package but any special use of ribbon going all the way around the package is an upcharge for
materials.
This year we would like to take pictures of large or unusual items or just a person with a lot of items
wrapped sowe can put them on facebook and try to get more buzz on our girt wrapping at the mall.
Remember to get permission and the persons name so we can put them on the
facebook site.

Editors note : Sorry to say I am not used to checking my email every day and I am missing some an-
nouncements that chairs are sending to me to send to the membership. As chairs of committees listed above you can send a group email to your committee’s members or the entire Noon Kiwanis membership as I do every week with this bulletin. Just go to the Kiwanis website, log into our members only portion, scroll down to the email tab and you will find the place were you can put in and email to All Members or make your own committee list save it as your 2017 ____ Committee and you can compose a message to just them in the compose area. Finish the email and hit send. It’s really easy since I can do it and it will cut out a middle man to go through to contact the membership.
Thanks to everyone who has told me they like the bulletin and I am doing a good job since I have taken over as editor. Even though I don’t say it, it is good to hear because I have never done this much writing in my life and my typing has gotten up to two fingers on each hand instead of one so I have gotten twice as fast!!!!!!!!!!
If you have problems Bud Everett is a great help he taught me so I am sure he can teach you.
