To better support our parishioners who experience hearing loss, we

have an Assistive Listening System available, which can be used in the Church and Geary Hall. If you have telecoil-equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants you would use the neck loop plugged into the receiver body pack, after switching your hearing aids to the tcoil setting. If you do not have hearing aids or no telecoil setting, the alternative is to plug headphones or ear buds into the receiver body pack. The neck loop, headphones and receivers need to be checked out—can use your own headphones or ear buds. Please see an Usher or Sacristan.

WELCOME THE COMMUNITY

Dear Parishioners,

It’s no secret that the attention span of people toward the holding of conversations, absorbing information, the ability to focus on public addresses, and the simple notice of other people, either in line at a check-out stand or simply passing by, continues to decline in the technological age in which we have been so deeply enmeshed, dependant, and sadly addicted. You may notice from simple observation that people are mostly looking down, usually at a handheld phone or other communication device, no matter where they may be situated. Therefore, we should not be surprised that our culture has become increasingly apathetic toward matters of faith, sacred mystery, institutional religion, and authority of any kind. The movement of God, the Presence of the holy, is not sufficiently stimulating. God does not keep our attention because we have lost the art of waiting, discernment, reflection, and contemplation. It takes too much effort that appears to be wasted time, because God and the beliefs attached to a Supreme Being are not moving fast enough. In short, God is falling behind. It is God who is becoming outdated, especially for the younger generations. There is no time to spare, no desire for depth, no reflection on consequences. If a peer had encountered Christ today on the shore, in his boat, and in this age, Peter’s high-tech conditioning (though still a fisherman) may have been a huge impediment to even have noticed the Presence of the Divine in his midst. The print media industry is experiencing serious decline because people do not read any longer, and instead they receive most of their news from late night comics and cable TV talking heads, who are more propaganda machines than news outlets. If we are not attentive to the experiences, ideas, and relationships that we are offered, how can we even begin to notice God in this picture? C.S. Lewis once said: “When people quit believing in God, they will begin to believe in other things.” —Father Gary Thomas

BUILD OUR PARISH FAMILY

Justice Bible Study Bible Study continues with Cory Dixon, Adult & Family Faith Formation Coordinator We will be looking at notions of justice in the Bible: God’s

special concern for the oppressed, the conversion of heart necessary to follow him, and the call to welcome the stranger and care for the poor. Sessions will be in the Parish Center on Tuesdays (2/12, 2/19, 2/26, and 3/5) in the morning (9:00-10:30 AM) and the evening (7:00-8:30 PM).

Spiritual Autobiography Group Come join the new Spiritual Autobiography Group, presented by Cory Dixon, Adult & Family Faith Formation Coordinator We will be reading classic spiritual autobiographies and writing our own. This will be a chance to see how great spiritual themes show themselves in the lives of the saints and share with each other how God has been working in our own. We will meet twice a month on Thursdays, with a morning session (9:00-10:30 AM) and an evening one (7:00-8:30 PM). The next session will be 2/21.

ACT AS CHRISTIANS IN THE WORLD Searching for a Faith Community?

Curious about the Catholic Church? Missed Confirmation?

If you have been looking for a faith community, are curious about the Catholic Church, or would like to prepare for Confirmation or First Holy Communion, you are invited to learn more about the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). RCIA sessions help adults learn about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith, reflect on the Sunday readings, pray together, prepare for the sacraments, and get to know other Catholics. Adults wishing to reconnect with their Catholic faith are invited to participate. RCIA meets twice a month after the 9 AM Mass in the Parish Center. For more information, contact Jeannine Leichner, RCIA Coordinator, at (408) 867-3634 x505 or email [email protected]. Newcomers are welcome anytime!
