thelifeforceinhumans.Whilemostofusgarnered
arudimentaryunderstandingofthewayblood
functionsduringhighschoolscienceclasses,the
complexityofwhatblooddoesasitcourses
throughourbodiesislosttomostofus.Wedo
knowthatheavybleedingisbad,andthelossoftoo
muchbloodcanbefatal.Ourbodiesneedblood.
Butwecanwillinglypartwithsomebloodwithlit-
tleconsequencetoourhealth(asidefrommaybea
brieffeelingofwooziness)whenwedonateblood
toalocalbloodbank.�
� Inhisdeathonthecross,Christmadethe
ultimatedonationofblood.Heshedhisbloodand
gavehislifeforoursalvation.WhenJesushands
thecuptohisdisciplesattheLastSupper,hesays
tothem,"Thisismybloodofthecovenant,which
willbeshedformany"(Mk14:24).Thesewordsof
theLordarerepeatedateveryMass,remindingus
thatitismorethanwineinthechalicewetakeup,
andmorethanbreadinthehostweconsume.
Christgiveshis1leshasrealfood,andhisbloodas
realdrink.�
� AswecelebratethissolemnityoftheMost
HolyBodyandBloodofChrist,andthedeepmys-
terythatexistsinthatsacramentofChrist'sgiftto
us,werealizethatweareweakhumanbeingsas
westandbeforethepowerofGod.Inreceivingthe
bodyandbloodofChristwearerenewed,nour-
ished,andhealed.Likeabloodtransfusionforan
ailingindividual,thesacramentofChrist'sbody
andbloodgivesusstrengthforourdailylives.For-
ti1iedbyChrist,wecannolongerbeanemicinour
faith.Rather,withthefullvigorthatcomesfrom
regularlysharingintheEucharistweliveoutour
livesasChristians1illedwithloveforGodand
