YRefricenter was originally founded in 1957 in Havana, Cuba under the name “Almacenes Refricentro” by Cirilo C. Hernandez. Due to the changing political climate in Cuba during the early 1960s, Cirilo left the place he’d always called home in the hopes of finding better opportunities for his business. Having left Cuba with nothing, he re-established Refricentro in Puerto Rico thanks to a small loan he received from a friend he knew at Citibank. Obviously, since he had nothing to his name, that was the most the bank was willing to offer him, yet that was the foundation for opening his first “Refricentro” branch in Hato Rey, San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1964.

Cirilo states that one of the main reasons he was able to get his business off the ground was because factories like Mueller Industries, Danfoss and Tecumseh had confidence in his character due to their experience working with him when he was still operating in Cuba. When the political situation took a turn for the worse, many companies in Cuba decided not to pay their bills and blamed it on the government. Cirilo always paid his debts, and that’s why reputable companies felt comfortable extending him credit to get his business going.

After its forced transition to Puerto Rico, and successfully turning Refricentro into a nine-employee, two-branch operation, Cirilo decided that it was time to expand the company. In 1971, the company acquired its first warehouse in the United States in Miami, Florida. Originally, the warehouse was used as a hub to consolidate orders from various vendors in an attempt to reduce freight costs to Puerto Rico.

Out of that very warehouse, Cirilo opened an export sales office that began serving customers in the Caribbean and Latin America. Once that business started moving more volume, it became logical to open the first local sales counter to the Miami market. Not too long after, Cirilo expanded the company’s operations into the Dominican Republic, founding the company “Refripartes S.A.”

Through the 80s, 90s and into the new millennium, Refricenter and its sister companies continued a consistent growth across the territories that we serve, building long-lasting relationships with local contractors. Between constantly expanding our product offerings and services, adding more locations and using the highest quality suppliers, Refricenter has long been driven by the idea of being the one-stop shop for all HVACR needs.

Today, Refricenter and its sister companies, Refricentro and Refripartes, have approximately 300 employees that span South Florida, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. With 10 branches in the Florida market, 18 in Puerto Rico and 16 in the Dominican Republic, Refricenter has become a major influence in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry throughout Florida and the Caribbean. Hispanic Business, a California-based business magazine, named Refricenter the 59th largest Hispanic-owned company in the United States in 2013.
