Our classes are developed to assist those seeking better employment, and for those desiring further education. For over 75 years, Oxnard Adult School has provided residents with lifelong learning opportunities, offered short-term vocational training, and assisted adult students in making an optimum transition to work or further education. Medical Assistant: Administrative This course includes the knowledge, skills, atti-tudes, and behaviors necessary for a successful entry into the front office of a medical clinic, health care agency, or physician's office as a multi-skilled medical assistant. Administrative duties include welcoming patients, maintaining medical records scheduling appointments, and bookkeeping. This course is an excellent introduction to medical coding and billing for those who intend to continue their education in medical administration, and is one in a series that will prepare students to successfully pass the examination to become a California Certified Medical Assistant. Medical Assistant Program - Front and Back Office Medical Terminology

This course is an introduction to medical termi-nology in an easy and straightforward manner. Lessons include how to build medical terms and how these terms relate to the different body systems. Learn basic anatomy and physiology as you develop your list of terms. This course will improve your knowledge for your current job, or develop the vocabulary you need to com-municate with doctors or other medical profes-sionals. This class, in conjunction with the Medi-cal Assistant Clinical and Medical Assistant Administration courses will allow you to qualify to take the California Medical Assistant Certifi-cation exam. Medical Assistant: Clinical This course includes the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary for a suc-cessful entry into the back office of a medical clinic, health care agency, or physician's office as a multi-skilled medical assistant. Clinical duties include recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, assisting the physician during an exam, collect-ing blood and other lab specimens, and admin-istering medications as directed. This course is one in a series that will prepare students to successfully pass the examination to become a California Certified Medical Assistant.

Certified Nursing Assistant - CNA This course prepares students for licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant with classroom theory and clinical practice that teach the basic nursing skills and procedures for providing quality patient care at the bedside of acutely or chronically ill persons in a hospital, skilled care facility, or home setting. Nursing fundamentals and procedures, hygiene and infection control, patient comfort, safety, and home health concepts are covered. Prerequisites: Entrance exam is required before admission. The exam fee is $10 and must be paid at the office prior to testing. Students must provide proof of a valid social Security number. Students must complete a physical exam demonstrating general good health and freedom from (and immunity to) communicable diseases. Students must be able to lift 50 pounds with good body mechanics. Students must have either an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Profes-sional Rescuers card or a Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR card valid for the duration of the course. Students must also complete a state application and pass a background check. Oxnard Adult School is not permitted to send students who have been convicted of a crime (other than a minor traffic violation) to CNA/HHA clinical sites unless they first obtain a clearance under California Law. A drug screening during the program may be required.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers This course teaches those with a duty to act (professional rescuers) the skills needed to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Topics in-clude one and two-person CPR, use of resuscitation masks, and the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Participants will learn to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies for adults, children, and infants through discussion, video, and hands-on training. Certification by the American Red Cross is valid for 2 years. Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

Home Health Aide - HHA This combined lecture/lab course teaches the student the theory and clinical skills needed to work with clients in the home care setting. Emphasis is given to safety principles and to methods for providing physical care and emotional and social support. Upon successful completion of this course, the student is eligible to take the certification examination as a Home Health Aide in the State of California.

This class must be concurrently taken with OAS Fall 2015 CNA program.

Pharmacy Technician

Start a new career in the healthcare industry in just one semester! This 240-hour program consists of theory and clinical prepara-tion for employment in a pharmaceutical setting. Topics include: medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; pharmaceutical settings; duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician; pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and sym-bols; metric and apothecary systems; record-keeping; dispensing prescriptions; and the man-ufacturing, packaging, and labeling of drug products. Pharmacy Technician Career Technical Education- Medical

Pharmacy Technician Externship

The Pharmacy Technician Externship program will provide students with up to 120 hours of hands-on training as they work along side dedi-cated and compassionate professionals in a state-of-the-art environment. This high-quality training program will give students the advantage of work experience in the competitive field of Pharmacy Technician and better prepare them for the exciting road ahead. The fee in-cludes required general and professional liability insurance and the assignment of a coordinator of a pharmacy to oversee students' hours of participation, evaluate students' progress, and assist students in completion of program objec-

tives.

Emergency First Responder

Students will learn to provide immediate medical attention in a variety of situations, and to assist emergency medical service providers (EMS). Completion of this class will provide a strong background useful in many careers including: fire service, sports medicine, life-guard positions, ski patrol, medical personnel, and in preparation for EMT courses. In addition to First Aid and Emergency Medical Care, the course includes: Anatomy and Physiology, Body Systems, and Medical Terminology (including basic medical terms in both Eng-lish and Spanish). Upon completion, students will become certified in both First Aid and CPR.

Dental Assistant

Semester 1

This course is designed to prepare students for employment in a dental office as a dental assistant. Students will learn dental terms, x-ray techniques, instrument identifi-cation and preparation, chair-side assisting and preventative dentistry skills. Students will prepare and take the examination for the State dental x-ray license. The CEC Dental Assistant class has been approved by the Board of Dental Examiners for dental x-ray licensing in California. Students must pass a State dental x-ray examination to work as a Dental Assistant.

Automotive Service Beginning and Advanced

This course is a comprehensive overview of basic operation principles and repair proce-dures. Systems included are ignition, charging, cranking, cooling, fuel, lubrication, suspension, engine operation, basic electricity, and brakes.

The advanced course provides preparation with the skills required in the diagnosing, servicing and repairing automotive ignition, fuel injection and engine computer management systems. Screen Printing

In this course, students develop skills in textile

screen-printing, printing terminology, equipment

used in the printing process, buying and selling

Floral Design

electrical practices including wire and conduit sizing and

Welding Beginning/Advanced

This beginning course is designed for students who

want to develop the knowledge and skill necessary

to obtain entry-level employment and advancement

welding (MIG), Heil-arc (TIG), and Plasma cutting.

These skills are developed through practical exercises

and the design and construction of welded projects.

Auto Paint Repair & Refinishing Beginning and Advanced

The training emphasis in this course is on metal and

plastic surface preparation, masking techniques and

materials, application and sanding of primer and

Accounting introduces the principles and processes

involved in double-entry accounting systems. The

course covers the accounting cycle, including use of

You may choose whichever of these applications

you need to focus on. The instructor will get you

started and assist you in any of them. When you

feel comfortable with the skill level you possess

Citizenship Preparation This course provides the prospective citizen with knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Beginning to Advanced Levels Whether you want to get a job, get a promotion,

Migrant Education Program Students between 18 and 21 years of age who work or whose families work in fishing, agriculture, or the transport or preparation of agricultural prod-ucts, may qualify for educational assistance under the Migrant Program. HSE Test Preparation There are study materials for all parts of the High

School Equivalency HiSET® and General Educa-

tional Development (GED®) tests . Each student

studies in a lab setting with teacher support to gain the skills he/she needs to pass the test. It is an open-entry program. Register at the office at any time and make an appointment for orientation.

In addition to the GED®, candidates in the state of California are also able to take the HiSET® exam (High School Equivalency Test) to earn a high school equivalency certificate issued from the state. To schedule an exam, you must have an e-mail address and go online to create your profile. Go to HiSET.ets.org and enter the test takers tab. Find the tab marked create an account and fill in all the information. This website also offers free sample questions and practice tests to help you get ready for the exam. After you create your profile, print out the page with your HiSET ID number.

To schedule your examination, you must register at the Oxnard Adult School office. You must bring this ID number and a valid identification (CA Driver’s license or ID, military ID, passport or international government ID with current picture) when you schedule your test and on each test day. Name on ID must match the name on registration. Candidate must be 18 years or older and not a high school graduate.

The fee for first time examinees is $130 which includes all 5 tests, and the CA Equivalency Certificate. The fee to retake a previously failed test is $15. All testing fees must be paid at the Oxnard Adult School main campus with cash or by credit care only. There are NO refunds.

HSE Preparation (En español) Preparation is offered in two different locations at morning or evening time. This semester-long class is based on a comprehensive review of mathematics, writing/reading, social studies, and science subjects. The class is entirely instructed in Spanish and students may need more than one semester to be prepared to take the tests. Additionally for Spanish HSE students there is an optional free-of-charge Saturday computer lab session twice a month at Second St. Campus. There is an 85 min math review during the first half of the class, and another 85 min Science review for the second half for both, GED® and HiSET®

tests.

The GED® Testing program has been used for over 65 years to measure and evaluate the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue higher education, obtain specific jobs, gain promotions, and achieve personal goals. A GED® credential is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma and is recog-nized throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It is offered in both English and Span-ish. Students with special needs can apply for ac-commodations in advance.

The General Educational Development exam is a national test designed to measure the skills and concepts usually learned during four years of high school. Most employers (95%) consider it the equiv-alent of a high school diploma. Community colleges accept this in lieu of a diploma. The GED® test is entirely computer-based. There are four content areas: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathe-matical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. To pass, you must receive a score of at least 150 on each test module and a total score of 600 across the four test modules.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Registration for the GED® Test is done online only

The examinee must have an e-mail address, a major credit card, and need to go online to register. In case an examinee does not have a credit card, he/she may purchase a voucher at the Oxnard Adult School office. The test fee will be $140. The fee to retake a previously failed test is $35. Examinees must be at least 18 years of age. A valid government issued photo ID is required. The fees may change.

PLEASE NOTE: The GED® test was revised for 2014. Previous scores for incomplete or failed test sections of the 2002 GED® cannot be carried over to the new 2014 GED® test.

Spanish for Community Service This class is designed for individuals interested in learning, main-

taining, and improving their ability to converse in Spanish at inter-

mediate and advanced levels. Through vocabulary development,

basic grammar, reading exercises and guided practice, students

learn the essentials of understanding and speaking contemporary

Spanish. Materials included.

Parents Prepared/Parent Project Parents learn basic parenting skills such as how to reconnect and estab-

lish a relationship with their son/daughter as well as discuss teen social

issues and behavior. Also covered is important academic information as

well as how to utilize school district resources to help parents support their

teenagers through their high school journey. These programs are designed

for parents of teenagers that are difficult, defiant, or for parents that might

simply want to be better prepared on how to handle difficult situations.

Upholstery- Beginning and Intermediate This class will teach you the basics for starting your own upholstery

business or working on your own home projects. Learn to use heavy-

duty upholstery machines and upholstery hand tools. Get hands-on

practice with techniques for layout, cutting, installation, and yardage

calculations. Students must provide their own projects and materials.

No leather projects please, but vinyl is okay. No project over 4 feet is

allowed. Maximum enrollment 12 students.

Sewing Class Beginning and Intermediate

Learn pattern layout, cutting and sewing techniques, proper

selection of materials, and receive assistance with common

problems in garment construction. Students learn about quilting,

wearable art and related quilting projects in a relaxing atmos-

phere. Sewing machines are available for your use, or you may

bring your own and learn how to use. A new Janome Embroidery

machine is now available for student use. Beginners to experienced

welcomed! Minimum enrollment of 12 students required.

Lifelong Learning for Older Adults Strength Training / Body Dynamics

This course is for mature adult students who want to maintain total

body and mental fitness. The value of physical and mental well-

being to attitude and productivity is emphasized. Improve muscle

tone, endurance and balance.

Adults with developmental disabilities may enroll in these specialized

classes through the Adult School or through one of the affiliate service

counselor to discuss appropriate learning opportunities.

Nursing classes are accredited by the State of California. It is the policy of the Oxnard Union High School District to assign stu-dents irrespective of ethnic group, religion, age, color, sex, physical or mental disability, as per Title IX regulations.

REFUND POLICY 1. Absolutely no refunds will be issued once a class begins. 2. Absolutely no refunds will be granted on fees paid for tests. 3. No refunds will be issued for textbooks, unless the Adult School

issues the wrong book. 4. A receipt must accompany all refund requests. No exceptions. 5. The Adult School will refund registration fees if the Adult School

cancels the class. Refunds may take 4 to 6 weeks to process. 6. $20 of class fees are non-refundable.
