Fennel is one of our oldest cultivated plants and was much used by the Romans. Gladiators consumed fennel prior to battle to make them fierce, while Roman women ate fennel to prevent obesity.
(NAPSI)—As the days get shorter and the kids go back to school, prepare for the cooler weather by getting organized and completing basic maintenance. You’ll save money, time and space!
Keep It Moving After heavy sum-mer use, clean out gunk from sliding glass door tracks. Then apply WD-40® Multi-Use Product, available in an easy-to-store 3-oz handy can, to lubricate and prevent sticking and squeaking. The handy can is also great for lubri-cating zippers and suitcase wheels, and removing crayon from walls and sticky res-idue from metal and glass.
Clothing Exchange
As the temperature cools, wash summer must-haves like beach towels, swimsuits and summer clothing. Then donate gently used pieces your fam-ily has outgrown; toss stained, ripped or bro-ken items; and store

the rest in airtight con-tainers. Now you’ll have more room in clos-ets and drawers for fall must-haves like umbrellas, coats and sweaters.
Cut The Cost Most people only think to run their ceil-ing fans during the summer, but many units come with a switch that reverses the direction of the blades. Switching the blades’ rotation to clockwise from coun-terclockwise makes the room warmer.
Air pooled to the ceiling is circulated back into the living space, which can cut your heating costs as much as 10 percent.
Protect Your Invest-ment
Furnace mainte-nance is key to ensur-ing it stays in good condition throughout the heating season. Dirty filters restrict airflow and increase energy demand. To prevent expensive problems, check filters once a month and re-
place or clean as need-ed. If replacing your filter once a month is a hassle, consider switching to a perma-nent filter, such as an electrostatic or HEPA filter, which can re-move 99 percent of airborne particles. For more informa-tion about how WD-40 Multi-Use Product in the 3-oz can helps make home main-tenance easier, visit wd40.com.

Power Tool Safety TipsContninued from
Page 7 tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. Accord-ing to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emer-gency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost prior-ity when using power tools. Here’s how: · Read all manufac-turers’ instructions and guidelines before use. · Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition. · Use the right tool for the job. · Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or gog-gles. · Wear standard cot-ton or leather work gloves to protect hands. · Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud power tools. · Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials. · Always check that wires are kept away
from blades. · Maintain a tight grip on a tool. · Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance. · Pay attention when working with any power tool. · Only use attach-ments specifically recommended for the power tools and en-sure proper installa-tion. · Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use. · Routinely inspect tools for damage.
· Keep tools stored in secure locations when
not in use. SH152899
MS) -- Keeping your home at a comfortable temperature becomes an increasingly ex-pensive proposition with steadily rising energy costs. With the full force of win-ter upon us, you can keep air leakage and energy loss in check with a mini energy au-dit of your home that includes these three quick stops:#1 - Check for drafts
How To Control Air Leakage And Energy Loss In Your Home
Air leakage (espe-cially in the basement, on the main floor or through a wind-ward-facing wall) can make your home drafty, uncomfortable and difficult to heat, no matter how much you turn up the ther-mostat. Address air leakage by plugging the biggest leaks first, such as in the attic
Control Air LeakageContinue on Page 9
Control Air LeakageContinued from
Page 8 and around electrical holes, plumbing vents, basement rim joists (where the foundation meets the wood fram-ing), recessed lighting, windows and doors.#2 - Check your insu-
lation If you have conven-tional fiberglass or cel-lulose insulation, set-tling and sagging can compromise its per-formance and lead to
a big hit on your ener-gy bills. Look for gaps and signs of moisture problems in your in-sulation, especially in the attic, in the base-ment and in the room over the garage. If you’re planning home improvements or an addition, consider in-stalling an insulation/air barrier (like inno-vative Icynene) for complete air sealing and energy savings of up to 50 percent over conventional
insulation. More in-formation about your insulation options is available online at www.icynene.com.
#3 - Check your furnace
How old is your furnace? If it pre-dates 1992, it might only op-erate at about 55 to 78 percent efficiency. A new Energy Star-qual-ified furnace can oper-
ate above 90 percent efficiency as a result of more efficient heat ex-changers and electron-ic ignition. SH122842 CAPTION: Spray foam insulation can help overcome many issues associated with conventional fiber-glass or cellulose insu-lation, such as settling, sagging and potential moisture problems.
(NAPSI)—There’s good news, bad news and better news for people who don’t like to clean out their gut-ters. The good news is, you won’t have to
Avoid Gutter Cleaningif you get any of the more than 40 different versions of gutter cov-ers around. The bad news is, covered gutters are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and for
nesting bees, wasps, even small rodents. Torrential rains can overwhelm the cov-er, causing ground erosion. The covered gutter can increase the chance for damaging winter ice-dams. The better news:
There is an alternative. The time-tested Rain-handler Rain Disper-sal System has a pat-ented louver design so gutters don’t collect leaves or debris and require no cleaning or maintenance. Gen-tle, rain-sized drops
spread out, away from your home. You’ll nev-er have to climb a dan-gerous ladder to clean gutters again. Learn More - Visit www.rainhandler.com or phone (800) 942-3004 for further infor-mation.

37th Annual Christmas House Tour
Governor Wolf His-torical Society will hold its 37th annual Christmas House Tour of historic homes and landmarks 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, starting at the Soci-ety’s historic site, 6600 Jacksonville Road, Bath. This year’s theme is “Coverlets - A Warm Christmas,” with a large display of early woven coverlets from the 18th and 19th centuries. The campus will be open starting at 9 a.m. On the site there will be a free 1800s Histor-ic Family Day (dona-tions accepted). The campus will be filled with 1800s costumed craftspeople doing hearth cooking, pre-senting ancient herbs and their use and ear-ly Fraktur painting demonstrations. There will be demonstra-tions of hand-forged iron kitchen tools, weavers and spinners, wood slab benches, a one-room schoolhouse teacher, carved toys and more. Children’s crafts will be taught. Additional local craft-ers will feature beau-tiful items for sale. Everyone is invited to enjoy these features at no charge. You can also sign up for the craft classes being taught on the campus each month. There will be dis-plays of a large 1800s woven jacquard cover-let and earlier overshot coverlets throughout the three buildings on the site, many dated and signed from early local weavers. The Daily Grind
Café will be open in the Monocacy School, offering soups, snacks and lunches to eat there or take with you on the tour. Seven private homes are featured on the tour this year, plus four other histor-ic structures. All date to the 1800s and early 1900s. Each was select-ed for its amazing his-tory. They include: A large Victorian B and B complete with an
attached early general store, an early 1800s barn that is now a beautiful home, a tiny stone gem that was used by passengers while waiting for a train, a large stone cen-ter hall Georgian, the original slate-walled Chapman School and more. House tour tickets are $25 if purchased in advance, $30 on the site the day of the tour. Tickets go on sale Nov. 11 at: Bath Drug, 310 S. Walnut St., Bath; S. Seem An-
tiques & Artisans, 100 S. Chestnut St., Bath; Miller Supply Ace Hardware, Route 329 and Savage Road, Northampton; Curt’s Cyclery, 182 Bath Pike, Nazareth; and Snow Goose Gallery, 470 Main St., Bethlehem. For further informa-tion, go to govwolf.org, call 610-837-9015 or go to the following Facebook address: Wolf Academy His-toric site and the Gov-ernor Wolf Historic Society.

Fight Odometer Fraud (NAPSI)—For a crime that has so much mileage on it, odome-ter fraud not only still occurs, it’s growing. Recent research by Carfax shows there are still over 200,000 new cases of odome-ter fraud every year and that the problem has grown nearly 50 percent in just the last three years—but it doesn’t have to hap-pen to you. Here’s a look at three facts and tips that can
help protect you. 1. What’s happen-ing: Criminals are us-ing software now to change digital odome-ters electronically and artificially inflating the car’s value. Few-
er miles equals more money. 2. Where it happens: You can find a rolled-back vehicle practical-ly anywhere but the risk is highest in Cali-fornia, Idaho, Nevada, Massachusetts and New York. 3. What you can do: Take the car to your mechanic to ver-
ify its condition. Their trained eye will notice whether certain parts or components show advanced signs of wear that don’t match what the odometer
says. Also, get more tips and information, plus a free way to check a VIN for odom-eter fraud, at carfax.com/guides.
