The South Area Jewish Community will join hands on Sunday, April 8th, 2018in a joint Social Action Mitzvah Day embraced by temples and other Jewish organizations in the South Area. CHAI South Area Temple Collaboration repre-sents many of the temples, synagogues, and Jewish organizations in the South Area, which have united across denominations for joint social action activities that serve our communities. T h e H e b r e w w o r d “mitzvah” means “good deed”. The entire South Area Jewish Community, indi-viduals, and families are invited to participate in a variety of activities includ-ing preparing food for Fa-ther Bill’s and homeless shelters, collecting food for disadvantaged families
through Fa mi ly T a-ble,making blankets for do-nation, improving the home of a recipient unable to pay for essential home repairs through Rebuilding To-gether Boston, and more. The synagogues will also be collecting items to donate to NuDay Syria, a non-profit organization focused on bringing humanitarian aid inside Syria and helping displaced Syrians in the bordering areas around Syria. In conjunction with the Social Action Mitzvah Day, on Friday evening April 6, 2018 at 7:30 pm Temple Beth David of Canton is hosting Shabbat services with special guest Arthur Bembury, Executive Direc-tor of Partakers. Partakers is a small non-profit organiza-tion helping to reduce

This balm can be used as a lotion, hair conditioner or cuticle cream, as well. 1/2 cup coconut oil 1/4 cup almond oil 5 tablespoons beeswax pastilles 1 tablespoon shea butter 1-1/2 tablespoons Aunt Sue’s Raw & Unfiltered Honey 15 drops of lavender oil 8-ounce glass jar, or many several small tins with lids
Combine all ingredients except the honey and laven-der oil into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals for two minutes or until all ingredi-ents have melted. Mix in the honey and lavender oil and immediately pour into the jar. Let cool to room tem-perature. To reach desired texture, melt the balm again and add or remove beeswax or lavender oil.
Homemade Honey Hand Balm
1 tablespoon cooking oil 1 pound orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut into 3/4-inch dice (about 31/4 cups) 12 ounces loose breakfast sausage One 7-ounce can chopped green chiles Nonstick cooking spray 10 ounces crusty French bread, with crusts cut or torn into 3/4 -inch pieces (about 10 cups) 4 ounces chevre cheese, crumbled (about 1 cup) 3 tablespoons chopped fresh sage 8 large eggs 2 cups milk 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the oil. Add the sweet potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add the sau-sage and cook, breaking it up and stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are
lightly browned and tender and the sausage is cooked through, about 8 minutes. Stir in the chiles and set the skillet aside. Coat a 21/2- to 3-quart casserole dish with cooking spray. Arrange 1/3 of the bread in the dish. Top with 1/3 of the sweet potato mix-ture, 1/3 of the cheese and 1/3 of the sage. Repeat 2 times. Set aside. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour the egg mixture over the casserole and set aside for 20 minutes, pressing on the bread occasionally to help it absorb the liquid. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F. Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 50 min-utes. Remove the foil and continue baking until the top is browned and the center is set, about 10 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting and serving.

If you’re like most people, when spring comes, you’re ready to get outside and make your yard both beauti-ful and functional. Maybe you’re aiming to have the best yard on the block, want to install an outdoor family room, or want to expand your space for entertaining. Perhaps your kids or pets could use a better space for play. Regardless of need, now is the time to get “backyard ready.” • Plan your needs. Draw a sketch of your yard. Include any major features such as trees, bushes, an herb or vegetable garden, flower beds, lawn furniture, play or sports equipment, an out-door patio, or birdbath. Will bushes need to be trimmed back from your home or garage? Do you want to put in some flowering bushes or a tree? Are you planning to install a fence and more grass because of your pet?
Now list the tools and equipment needed to take care of your yard and what will make the job easier. • Consider equipment needed. Visit your garage or shed and find all your lawn and garden tools. Wheel out your mower and get out other equipment. Look it over and make a list of what’s needed or could be upgraded. Repair anything that needs attention or iden-tify where a newer or other machine is required. If you have a large vegetable gar-den, you need a cultivator or tiller. If you have a large lawn, an upgrade to a riding lawn mower might make mowing easier. A string trimmer might make caring for bushes or trimming grass near a fence line easier. A pole pruner can help trim back limbs that are too high to reach safely with a saw and a leaf blower can clear leaves faster than a rake.

• Plan your needs. Draw a sketch of your yard. • Ask questions. Talk with the staff at the store or ask
online about the equipment. In the store, ask to pick up and hold equipment to determine its “fit” for you. Discuss safety features and ask about fueling and care instructions. Find out how often equipment may need to be serviced.
• Make a plan for storage and maintenance. Store your equipment in a cool and dry
place. It should typically be serviced at the end of the fall and the beginning of the spring. Put service dates on your calendar with a reminder. Learn More
