Ski Apache not disappointed ROAD: Residents push for new look at road plan More than 400 took to the slopes during opening weekend 'at Sierra Blanca

BYAMANDAWRT

Ski Apache opened Friday with more than 150 skiers. More than 400 skiers hit the slopes during the weekend, Riker Davia marketing director, said.

"'It was a really good turnout because this is traditionally a quiet time of year," he said.

The turnout was a "typical mix," including !ocala, skiers from West Thxas, Las Cruces, Roswell and about 25 perCent from Mexico.

Davis said they were pleasE..od because typically people from Mexico don't visit the ski area until later in the season.

''People were very pleased and surprised with the skiing," Davis said. The peak has been doing its advertising with a white top that can be seen for miles around.

Snowstorms are expected to move into the area thiB week. "Any natural snow is certainly welcomed,"' Davis said. But in the meantime, Ski Apaclu! will continue to make snow. Lincoln Chair 2 will open in the .. near future," he said. 'Ibp Notch, a difficult trail, opened Monday, making six of 55 trails open.

General manager Roy Parker said the ski area received 5 inches of snow as of 3:30 p.m. Thesday.

But local businesses have yet to see an increase in business since the opening of Ski Apache. Steve Tally of Hawthorne Suites Convention and Golf Resort said the hotel had seen very few skiers over the weekend.

"I could count on one hand the ntunber of skiers we had," Tally said.

He said as soon as there is more snow business will

increase. "I think a lot of people are watching the weather."

Comfort Inn, the Ramada Inn and the Travelodge said that business had not increased at their hotels during the weekend.

Rush Ski Shop and Snowboard and Action Ski and Snowboard said businesS hadn't increased since the opening of the ski area. Action Ski ~d Snowboard said there were three people Friday, four Saturday and two people on Sunday.

White Dove said there was, n't a notable increase in business last weekend, But Sally Wimbrow of CandlePower said "we've been busy all weekend." She wasn't sure if it could be attributed to the opening of Ski· Apache because she hadn't seen a lot of people in ski attire, but said maybe the shoppers' relatives were skiing.

N.M. Tech professor s book looks beneath earth s crust

Mantle plumes - mushroom-shaped regions of hot rock that rise up from under the Earth's crust - are the focus on a new book by a professor at the New Mexico Institute for Mining and Technology in Socorro.

In his newly published book, "Mantle Plumes and Their Record in Earth History," Kent C. Condie examines the role of mantle plume througt;lut the geological record and describes the newest results of research on mantle plumes conducted by geologosts, geophysicists and geochemists at locations around the world.

· Mantle Plumes took a back seat to plate tectonics when both geologic processes were aCcepted by the earth science community in the late 1960s, Condie said.

But becauae of recent advances in computer modeling and seismic tomography,

combined with new data garnered from preliminary exploratons of Mare and Venus, scientific interest in mantle plumes is increasing, according to the noted geochemistry professor in Socorro.

"Now seemed a good tme to bring together under one cover a summary of the truly enormous amount of data that has been published, principally during the 1990s, related to mantle plumes and their role in earth history," Condie said.

Mantle plumes typically consist of a large buoyant blob in the Earth's mantle that push up against the Earth's plates and are connected to a "tail'" that descends to the core mantle interface, he explained.

The intense localized heat that results from upwellings of mantle plumes often sustain long-lasting, exceptionally hot regions where volcanic and geothermal activities are evident, such as the Hawaiian-

.. ·~

Emperor Seamont chain, Iceland and Yellowstone National Park.

But plumes are more obvious on planets such as Mars, where no tectonics are involved and huge volcanoeS e$ts on the surface, the professor said.

Condie's book covers "superplumes," which are catastrophic. volcanic eruptions that may have been responsible for many of Earth's major extinctions and for breaking up the supercontinents, he said.

The book is published by Cambridge Universiry Press and is available in bookstoreS t · • in both hardbound and paperbound editimls.

Condie has taught at New Mexico 'Thch since 1970. A previous book, "Plate TectonicS: and Crustal Evolution," went through four editions and most recently was reprinted in 1997. He is the author and co-author of two other books.

The Internet: A cigarette loophole CHAPEL lllLL, N.C.- Using

the five most popular computer search engines to .scour the Internet, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers haVe found thO.t c;:igarette vendors are easy to locate online. They worry that childreil who cannot· purchase tobacco products in stores will go online to buy products damaging to their health.

The researchers, led by Dr. Kurt M. RibiSJ., assistant professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at the UNC School ofPublic Health, identified 88 vendors in 28 states. Nearly half - 43 - were located in New York- State, and many were in tobacco-producing states with low cigarette excise taxes. Indian reservations housed 49 of .the 88 -Dtes.

Only 28.4 percent carried u.s. 3urgeon General health warnings that are required by law to appear on all cigarette packages and advertisements. Alm.ost 20 percent failed to warn minors of· minimum age requirements.

A report on the study appears m· the December issue of 'lbbacoo Control, a public health journal published by the British Medical Journal. Co-authors are t1NC graduate st~nts .Arutice E. Kim. and Rebecca ·S. WilliBlilB.

"Nearly an sites- '96.6 percent· - sold premium or value brand cigarettes, such as MarlborO, which is the leading brand '8lnong youth, and 21.6 percent sold dutYfree Marlboi-os which' are now banned under the Master Settlement Agre~ent, "- Rillisl

said. "About one in five effered standing orders that allow the· bwer to. receive regular shipments of cigarettes each month."

Internet cigarette v:endors present new regulatory ahd· enforcement challenges fur tObacco control advocates because .of the difficulty in regulating Internet content, he said.

Many vendors are on Indian res~tions and regulating· salesthe~e also presents complica.~ons because they claim ·sovereignty and are less· regulated by states and the federal government.

Conducted in January, 2000, the study involved extensive Web slllVng by typing such phrases as "cheap cigarettes" and "discount cigarettes., into the top 5 Internet search engines.

A second study appearing in the B8Dle issue, co-written by Jennifer B. Unger and Louise Ann Rohrbach of the University of Southern California and Ribisl, involved ·surveying more than 17 ,;000 10th- and 12th-grade California students about their attempts to buY cigarettes on the Internet. ·

That study- found 2.2 percent of the· adolescents asked had tried. Most of ·those were younger students, males, freqlleD.t sm.okers and teens who found it hard to get to~ccO products elsewhere.

· Younger adolescents. may turn to th~ internet to buy cigarettes since they can more' easlly hide the fact that they. are _under&m!, the authors~- M:~ monitor.ing -and regWation are ~ded.. the reseiU'Chers· Said. ·

researchers here asked children and adults a series of ri9fculously simple questions about' the Setll3es, they discovered something unexpected: the children -ecored higher than the adults.· , The.<tUeStions·w.ere as basic as, "'Do you see with yoUr ears?'" Children usually answered correctly, saying that you can't. )Jut adults sometb:n~-would answer that you can see with your ears. The reason, the Ohio State University resea.rchers found, is tied to

. the adult use of metaphOr. . ) As children become adults, theY stop taking everything literally a.:p.d are able to dis~·the intended meafrlngs in day-tcrday conversation. · .

"Presumably, the answers to the questiw:;:as were so obvious to adults that the adults interPreted the questions metaphorically," said Gerald Wmer. leader of the study and professor of psychology at Ohio State University. ·

As children grow older, they begin to grasp and use metaphors, an abilii;y that reflects a .sharpening of' cognitive and linguistic skills. It also suggests an improVed unders~diD.g of social behavior and the subti.eties ·of human interaction, w~ said •.

Wmer and his ~ reported_. their findings in a recent iss1.,19 Of the JO'lll"l1al ofPsyeholinguistiC ilesearch.

The researchers gave a set of sim.ple questions to two groups - one ·cmnprlsing children. in . third Jl]ld fifth griuies and the other cmnprising college students. The quSstionnaire asked: -•'Do you see with your fingeios?" "Do you~ with your eyes?'" "Do yOu hear with yQUl' noser

Almost d the children answered correctly, responding to the literal meanirtg Of the questions. The majority of the coll~ st;uden:ui. got the ~ -wrong- literally _speakin)J, :J;hat IS.

In a second part of the· study, the researchers asked both -groups the same questions, only this time,. the 001-fege students were told that that their · ans;wers would be evaluAted alongside the responses given by the children.

·In other words, the college studepts Were ·given a reason to treat the ques•tions literally. They· reopoDded With the correct answers this tirD.e, just like the children. .

"Earlier, the OJ.d.h-· group was ~waring the queB!tion& ·in a metaphoric$1 sense, .. Wm.er said.

One cdllege _student, fOr . examp1~ ·responded to :the question: "Oan you

hear with your eyes?'" with the expla·natim:i that it was possible to "see a dog barking.with.Out having to hear it." Respilnding to the question, "'Can ~u. ll.ear with your nos·e?", another student Said, "You can sniffout troUble."

_ W"mer s8.ys the results of the study tit. into a theory- on ~ogic and conversa~ tion thai_ s~sts wh~ adults. talk to each other, they· don't respond to the literal meaning of a message,· but .to what they thi$ is the intei:u:led mean;,g,

"When I ask my 18"-year-old nephew _'Can you pass m~ the -salt.' he d()f!!sn"tjust look up ·at'm.e and, B;ay "yes, I .can pass the salt'," Wmer said. ''He· assumes that i: am as~g him to. actually ~s the sSlt. Adults are more inclined to engage in this interpretive quality of language while kids are more likely to be literalist$."

As kids gi'Ow v,p, Wmer said, they become 1ess literal m their interpreta.. tion Of everyday conversation and begin to respond metaphorically to language. .

"We know that as kids get older, they get_ brighter, b$:ome more symbolic 8nd ca:pable of abstm.ct thinkinl{~.,

The Capitao Tigers girls basketbail team got through a gut check Friday in Loving to come home with a 49-47 win· oVer the Lady :Falcons.

While first-year coach Rusty Wilcox said the Tigers (S.:2) could play much better, he didn't · take the victory for granted.

· "Any time you win on the road, it's always a. positive, .. he said.

The win guaranteed Capitan more wins than they notched during last season. The 'IigerS lost s11 but- ofthmr games;;, 2000-2001.

Wilcox chalked the early success up to solid team effort, saying that no individual is trying to do too much, even with Loving breathing down their necks.

"We could have just given up, but we didn't," \Vilcox said;

The coach added that he was pleased with his defense, but that he would like to see the team'S free-throw shooting improve. The Tigers' speed was tested, as the Falcons .featured a full-court
