Sunday, March 4th - Service with UU Songwriter Jim Scott - Join us for a special worship service led by legendary UU musician and environmental activist Jim Scott (http://jimscottmusic.com/). For more than three decades, Jim Scott has made it his business to create and perform music that celebrates the earth.

Thanks to everyone who participated in our incredible events throughout February, and especially to the Black Lives Matter Task Force and to Dr. Fran Kaplan and Reggie Jackson of America’s Black Holocaust Museum for the incredible weekend of training, discussion and worship they brought to us at Bradford UU. We also launched our annual pledge drive and authorized the use of the contingency fund to pay for an essential roof maintenance project that will begin very soon. Be sure to consider carefully your pledge and return your cards by March 31st! Again, thanks to everyone who participated in February – the

energy is very good at the church right now and you all are to thank for our recent successes! We start March with a very special service that you won’t want to miss – legendary UU musician and environmental activist Jim Scott will be blessing us with his words and music in a specially-crafted worship service that will highlight our commitment to the Earth and its inhabitants. Invite your friends – this will be a fantastic introduction to Unitarian Universalism and the spiritual dimensions of environmental justice work. We’ll continue our month with services dedicated to the theme of “Balance” – lifting up the cycle of liberation, the Equinox and Passover events to round out the month and welcome the Springtime in style! Many blessings for a wonderful beginning to Spring and hope to see you at church soon! Rev. Erik

From Your Board To You

Some things are not quite what you'd expect. Our century old church's ground base and sky roof are not as we knew them. Rev. Erik has researched Bradford's history and the building is 100 years old but the ground we own and stand on became the church's 150 years ago. So, we will celebrate a new anniversary this year. Then we look to the sky and see the roof slates must be replaced. So we go on older than we thought and looking for some things to be replaced, some things to change. The Black Lives Matter protest is making itself felt more each day. The BLM Task Force and the Board brought us Reggie Jackson and Fran Kaplan who trained many of our congregation how to listen without inference to exactly what someone else is telling us. We are better prepared to hear other voices besides our own. Then Sunday they guided us through the history of Unitarian Universalists opposition to slavery and Jim Crow laws. There were many UUs involved from the civil war through today’s protests. Now we are faced with our decision to add our voices and our actions to that protest. How can we reach beyond our congregation to the community around us? The call is for something more than what we think about and support with our words. We are embarking on a more active participation in a global protest. Like the building, our congregation goes way back. It changes and grows with a renewed vision, goals and strategic plans. Maybe someday a banner will fly from our tower.

DISCUSSION COURSE COMING SOON The Northwest Earth Institute was founded in 1993 with the objective to give people a framework to talk

about our relationship with the planet and to share in discovering new ways to live, work, create and

consume.

When you break big issues into small pieces and talk them through with others you discover insights and

inspiration. You build a personal network of shared stories and support that makes it easy to take action.

The mission of the non-profit NWEI is to inspire people to take responsibility for the Earth.

Our Green Sanctuary committee would like to support that mission by offering one of the following NWEI

courses later this spring:

“A Different Way” – this course provides an opportunity to reconnect with our values and

discover how simple living intersects with sustainability at a personal and global level. The course

consists of six discussion sessions and is available in paperback ($30) or e-book ($28)

“Change is Our Choice: Creating Climate Solutions” – A course on climate action that will

help you increase resilience and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Presented in an interactive e-

book, this course integrates video, audio and written content. It is a five- session course with an e-book

$28),

“Powering a Bright Future” – This discussion course explores issues related to energy use

and what we can do as individuals and communities interested in promoting energy sustainability. It is a

three- session discussion with an e-book ($20).

For more information please see nwei.org. Be sure to let a member of the Green Sanctuary committee

know which course you may be interested in attending. We do have one scholarship available.

Sunday, March 4th – 10am Worship Featuring Jim Scott Composer and Musical Activist

For more than three decades, Jim Scott has made it his business to create and perform music that cele-brates the earth. His songs and poetry have inspired and educated audiences around the world. He has de-veloped presentations for every age group and crafted songs that sensitize his listeners to the beauty of the earth, teaching principles of ecology in memo-rable verses. “The Earth and Spirit Songbook” is an anthology of 110 songs of earth and peace, arranged and edited by Jim, including songs by many contemporary songwriters with some of his own. From his work with the Paul Winter Consort where he co-wrote the celebrated Missa Gaia – Earth Mass and many other pieces, in-cluding his “A Song for the Earth,” recorded live at the United Nations on the album Concert for the Earth, Jim has gone on to create an extensive body of work. His recordings “Earth, Sky, Love and Dreams” and “Sailing with the Moon” include many of his eco-anthems. In songs, choral music, instrumental soundtracks for several documentaries and the PBS series “Body and

Soul”, Jim continues to make music with a depth of artistry and craft that separates his music from that of many other singer songwriters. Jim has also ventured into musical theater. His musical “The Tree and Me” has been given full cast productions in Jamestown, New York, and Albion, Michigan, and its songs have become anthems for activists and educators. “The Rainforest Song”, written in a workshop with elementary students, has been published by Hal Leonard Publishers. “Plant More Than You Harvest” was included in a Sony Kids CD “Put On Your Green Shoes”. As Co-Chair of the Unitarian Universalist Seventh Principle Project, Jim helped to create the “Green

Sanctuary” program and accompanying handbook for building an ecological/spiritual awareness in

church congregations. He performs many benefit concerts and often appears at events, supporting

environmental causes with his music.

An additional notice, we’re restructuring the RE potlucks. We’ll no longer have a monthly get together, and instead we’ll be having 3 potluck lunches during the school year in September, February, and June. Look forward to more information as the months approach. Thank you for your time, and please remember to let your light shine! Krystal Rose, Director of Religious Education "Life is all about balance. Be kind, but don't let people abuse you. Trust, but don't

get deceived. Be content, but never stop improving." - Anonymous

We’re only a few weeks away from spring, and it’s time for joy! With the impending warmer weather, this is a great time to reflect on this month’s theme of Balance. Without the chill of winter we wouldn’t appreciate the emergence of spring, and without the darker days we might not appreciate the added hours of light. There is a delicate, yet sturdy, balance in all things – and this month we’re going to explore this in our classes from an internal and external sense. To wrap up the month of February and the theme of Perseverance, please take a few moments to ask yourself, your family, and your friends the following questions. If you have a thought that you’d like to share with the congregation, please email it to Krystal at [email protected] by the 14th and it’ll be in next month’s issue of The Quilt!

What are you grateful for today? How have you been practicing bravery? What’s something that you’ve failed at in the past and would like to try again?

If you’re looking for some exciting ways to celebrate the warmer weather,

please take notice of the following holidays and holy-days:

01st – Purim (Jewish) 02nd – Festival of Estsanatlehi

(Navajo) 03rd – Holi (Hindu) 05th – Commemoration of the Birth

of Lao-Tzu (Tao) 11th – Avalon Day (Pagan) 14th – New Year (Sikh) 16th – Festival of the Green Man

(Celtic) 17th – St Patrick’s Day (Christian)

18th – Remembrance of Saint Haji Bektash (Sufi)

20th – Ostara (Wiccan) 21st – Nowruz (Persian) 25th – Ram Navami (Hindu) 28th – Khordad Sal (Zoroastrian) 30th – Good Friday (Christian) 30th – First Day of Passover
