SERVICE THEME:The Gift of Spiritual Sight

WELCOME — We are so pleased that you have joined us for worship today! If you are a guest with us, please sign our guest register, which is located in the center entryway of the church. We welcome and encourage children to join our worship services! Enclosed “cry rooms” are available in the back of the church near the restrooms, if your child becomes restless. Pictorial children’s Bibles are available for children to use, on the table in the back of church. Please let us know if there is any other way we can be of service to you. Again, welcome! OUR MISSION — The mission of St. Andrew Lutheran Church is to guide people to know Jesus as their Savior, to grow in their faith, and to show Jesus to others. OUR BELIEF — We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the only source of all Christian doctrine and teaching. We believe that the only true God is the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that we are saved not by anything we do, but only through faith in Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our sins. We will be happy to tell you more about what we believe! OUR HISTORY — St. Andrew Lutheran Church was established in 1888 and is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a confessional Lutheran church body with over 1,200 congregations in North America and with more than 30 sister church bodies worldwide.

The light of the world (Jesus) brings sight to the blind and judgment to the blinded. Faith means seeing Jesus as Savior; as with the bronze serpent, we look on him and live (cf., Verse of the Day). We were born in the blindness of sin, and without the light of Christ we could not find a way to safety. Christ comes to shine his light into our sin-darkened hearts that we might see him and live. Yet, for those who refuse to see Jesus as their Savior, the blindness of unbelief remains. He gives gracious sight to the blind who trust in him; he gives blinding judgment on those who reject him; finally, he displays the work of God in the lives of those who now walk in the light of Christ.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S SERVICE

SPECIAL PRAYER REQUESTS – At this time, anyone may share special prayer requests with the pastor, which he will then pray about later in the worship service, during the Prayer of the Church.  If you prefer to submit a written prayer request, you may do so before the service or hand it to an usher during the offering.  As a family of believers, we want to know each other’s joys and struggles, so that we can pray for each other.

OPENING HYMN – 397 – Just As I Am, without One Plea

INVOCATIONM: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINSM: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAYM: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.M: Let us pray.

Lord God, in mercy receive the prayers of your people. Grant them the wisdom to know the things that please you and the grace and power always to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

PASSION HISTORY READING, PART 3: Matthew 26:57-75 (EHV)

Jesus’ First Trial in the Sanhedrin57Those who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas, the high

priest, where the experts in the law and the elders were assembled. 58Peter was following him at a distance and went as far as the courtyard of the high priest. He went inside and sat down with the guards to see how it would turn out.

59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60They found none, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward 61and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the

temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”62The high priest stood up and said to him, “Have you no answer?

What is this that these men are testifying against you?” 63But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I place you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God!”

64Jesus said to him, “It is as you have said. But I tell you, soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? See, you have just heard the blasphemy! 66What do you think?”

They answered, “He is deserving of death!” 67Then they spit in his face and punched him. Some slapped him 68and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you?”

Peter Denies Jesus69Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant

girl came to him and said, “You were also with Jesus the Galilean.”70But he denied it in front of everyone, saying, “I don’t know what

you’re talking about.”71When Peter went out to the entryway, someone else saw him and

said to those who were there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”72Again Peter denied it with an oath and said, “I do not know the

man.”73After a little while those who stood by came and said to Peter,

“Surely you are also one of them because even your accent gives you away.”

74Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!” Just then the rooster crowed. 75And Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

PSALM OF THE DAY – Psalm 143 – CW p. 118

FIRST LESSON – Isaiah 42:14-21 (EHV) 14I have been silent for a long time. I have kept still. I have restrained myself. But now, like a woman giving birth, I will scream. I will gasp and pant.

5

Page 6: SERVICE THEME: - standrewchicago.orgstandrewchicago.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/...  · Web view3/15/2020  · The light of the world brings sight to the blind and judgment to

15I will dry up mountains and hills. I will make all their grass wither. I will turn rivers into islands. I will dry up pools. 16I will lead the blind on a way they do not know. Along paths they do not know I will direct them. Ahead of them I will turn darkness into light and rough places into level ground. These are the things I will accomplish for them. I will not abandon them. 17They will be turned back and completely disgraced— those who trust in an idol, those who say to molten images, “You are our gods.” 18You deaf ones, listen! You blind ones, watch carefully so that you can see! 19Who is as blind as my servant? Who is as deaf as my messenger whom I sent? Who is as blind as my associate, as blind as the servant of the LORD? 20You, Israel, see many things, but you do not observe. Israel opens his ears, but he does not hear. 21Because of his own righteousness, the LORD was pleased to make his law great and glorious.

SECOND LESSON – Ephesians 5:8-14 (EHV) 8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Walk as children of light, 9for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord, 11and do not participate in fruitless deeds of darkness. Instead, expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention the things that are done by people in secret. 13But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes things visible. 14Therefore it is said, “Awake, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

VERSE OF THE DAY M: Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. (John 3:14-15)

GOSPEL – John 9:1-7, 13-17, 34-39 (EHV)After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that God’s works might be revealed in connection with him. 4I must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.”

6After saying this, Jesus spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and spread the mud on the man’s eyes. 7“Go,” Jesus told him, “wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

13They brought this man who had been blind to the Pharisees. 14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15So the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight.

“He put mud on my eyes,” the man told them. “I washed, and now I see.”

16Then some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath.” Others were saying, “How can a sinful man work such miraculous signs?”

There was division among them, 17so they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?”

The man replied, “He is a prophet.”34They answered him, “You were entirely born in sinfulness! Yet you

presume to teach us?” And they threw him out.35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out. When he found him, he

asked, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”36“Who is he, sir,” the man replied, “that I may believe in him?”37Jesus answered, “You have seen him, and he is the very one who is

speaking with you.”38Then he said, “Lord, I believe!” and he knelt down and worshipped

him.

39Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, in order that those who do not see will see, and those who do see will become blind.”

After the reading of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven

and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally

begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

SERMON – John 9:1-7, 13-17, 34-39 – The Gift of Spiritual Sight

for Latin America missions:Lord Jesus, you commanded your church to “go into all the world”

with your Word. You have enabled our synod to reach many faraway places with the gospel. We thank you for blessing our efforts in Latin America through the Academia Cristo Facebook and web pages. We especially ask you to bless the new connections made with students in Paraguay who are eager to share the gospel with their countrymen. Send your Holy Spirit to open hearts and minds to your saving grace. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYEROur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENTOur Lord Jesus has given us a holy Supper in which we receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of our faith. In this Supper, we celebrate the gift of his redemption, we bear witness to the fellowship we share as confessors of the truth, and we proclaim his death until he returns.  Following the teaching of the Bible (1 Corinthians 10:17; 11:27-29; etc.), our church practices “close communion.”  We ask that only those who are communicant members of this church or another congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) partake of the sacrament today.  If you are a visitor who is not a member of one of our sister churches, our pastor would be happy to speak with you about receiving the Lord’s Supper with us in the future!  Please mention it to him after the service!

M: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.M: Lift up your hearts.C: We lift them up to the Lord.M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil, who overcame us by a tree, would in turn by a tree be overcome. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

WORDS OF INSTITUTIONM: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.C: Amen.

The paraments are purple for the season of Lent. Purple, like black, is a penitential color. Purple was also a very cherished and expensive color in the ancient world and was therefore worn mostly by royalty. The Scriptures record that, as the Roman soldiers mocked and tormented Jesus on Good Friday, they put a purple robe on him in order to ridicule him and belittle the claim that he was a king. Therefore, purple is used during this penitential season of Lent as a vivid reminder of the contempt and scorn Jesus endured, and the sacrifice he made for our eternal salvation.

WELCOME, GUESTS! – We are happy to have you with us today! Please sign the guest register in the church entryway so that we have a record of your visit. Our pastor, Adam Gawel, would be happy to meet with you if you would like. Please join us for worship or Bible study again!

MEMORIALS- In loving memory of my dad, Joseph Czarny, on his birthday,

falls on 3/16, with love, by Gail Schoenbeck.

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND ADULT BIBLE STUDY TOPICS TODAYIn Sunday school today, the children continue with a unit from the Cross Explorations series, on the theme “Jesus Teaches about God’s Kingdom.” In adult Bible study, we continue in the series Sing to the Lord: A Study of Lutheran Hymnody. Adults meet for Bible study in the back of the church sanctuary, and children meet for Sunday school in the ministry center next door to church. All are welcome!

LENT & EASTER WORSHIP SCHEDULEAs last year, the St. Andrew Ministry Council has decided for this year only to hold mid-week worship services during Lent on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 26) and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (Apr. 9 & 10), all at 7:00pm. There will not be worship services on the other Wednesdays during Lent. On Easter Sunday (Apr. 12), we will have a single festival service at 9:30am (no dawn service this year), followed by an Easter brunch (about 10:45). Please mark your calendars to join us for these special services, and invite friends, relatives, coworkers, and neighbors to join us as well!

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) PRECAUTIONSThe St. Andrew Ministry Council has decided to enact some preventative measures in response to concern about coronavirus (COVID-19). First, please keep yourself informed with reliable information, primarily from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC - https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) and the Chicago Department of Public Health (https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/cdph/provdrs/health_protection_and_response/svcs/2019-novel-coronavirus--2019-ncov-.html). The primary general advice is to wash hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer; cover your mouth with your arm when you cough or sneeze; avoid touching your face, especially eyes, mouth, and nose; and stay home when you’re sick, except to get medical care. Specific to our worship services: 1) Hand shaking is totally optional, and if you prefer not to shake hands, that’s perfectly fine. 2) A bottle of hand sanitizer is available for use, in the Bible study area in the back of the worship space; and, of course, soap and water are always available in the bathrooms. 3) Before the Lord’s Supper, Pastor Gawel will use hand sanitizer at the altar. 4) For the time being, we ask that all communicants receive the bread (wafer) in their hand rather than directly into their mouth; please hold out your hand to receive the bread. 5) For the time being, we will only offer individual cups rather than common cup. Please let us know if you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns.

SERMONS AVAILABLE FOR STREAMING, DOWNLOAD, AND PODCASTINGIf you miss the Sunday sermon, would like to listen to it again, or would like to share it with a friend, audio recordings of the sermons are archived on our church website, posted weekly to our church Facebook page, and are available for podcasting (quick links and instructions available on our website). Go to http://standrewchicago.org/sermons/ to listen! Service folders are also available for download on our church website: http://standrewchicago.org/bulletins . Another great source for online sermons and messages is Time of Grace: http://timeofgrace.org

EASTER FOR KIDS – Apr. 5 (Sun.), 10:45am – 1:00pmWe’re planning an Easter for Kids event for Sunday, April 5, from 10:45am to 1:00pm. Come to church with your kids (and their friends!) and drop them off afterward as you would for Sunday school. We’ll

provide lunch. Kids will learn about Holy Week and Easter, do some crafts, play some games, and practice a song they’ll sing in worship on Easter Sunday (Apr. 12); we’ll also be practicing that song in Sunday school the next few weeks. All kids age 3 and up are welcome! More helpers are also welcome!... please let Pastor Gawel or ministry assistant Ben Kieta know if you’d like to help.

WELCOMING BACK MINISTRY ASSISTANT BEN KIETAThe St. Andrew Ministry Council has invited Ben Kieta, who was our ministry assistant last summer, to come and work with us again on outreach in the coming weeks. We want to give you some information about Ben's travel history, so that you won't have any concerns about him being here.... Ben was teaching English at a university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He left China on January 10, at the start of his university's long break for Chinese New Year. That was well before the coronavirus had begun to spread much beyond the epicenter of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, which is about 500 miles away from Hangzhou, where Ben was teaching. Ben then went to Thailand for a retreat, and did some other traveling for leisure in Laos and Malaysia. Since most things in China including universities were then shut down or restricted, Ben returned to the US instead of going back to China. Ben arrived in the US on February 17, and was staying with his parents in a suburb of Detroit from that date until he came to Chicago on March 11. By now, it has been over two months since he left China, and about one month that he has been in the US. This is well over the 14 days that the CDC recommends even for people coming from high risk areas (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/after-travel-precautions.html) -- and Ben did not come to the US from a high risk area, since it had already been 38 days after he left China by the time he entered the US . ... We hope that this information will help you to understand that, according to the CDC's guidelines, Ben poses no coronavirus risk. And, we hope that you will give him a warm welcome and pray for, support, and partner with him as he goes about his work with us here. Ben will start out by arranging English tutoring sessions with some of our Chinese-ministry members and other contacts, and if you would be interested in helping out with some one-on-one or small-group English tutoring, he would be more than happy to help you with some coaching on how to do that and materials you could use. Please speak with him or Pastor Gawel if interested!
