Difference between Service Learning and Community Service?

Service Learning By Definition

This is accomplished by combining service tasks with structured opportunities that link the task to self-reflection, self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills, and knowledge content.

CHECHS Focus This Year

• This year our focus as a school is to guide students into completing genuine service learning and not just a conglomeration of random volunteer hours.

• Although both are note worthy and credible, genuine service learning is what we are aiming for.

Service Learning General• Students are introduced to Service

Learning in their advisory Teen Leadership class.

• It is a mandatory requirement of all CHECHS students each year 9th-12th.

• The advisory teacher works with students to meet all requirements of Service Learning and all hours are turned in to the advisory teacher.

• Requirements and all documentation located on blackboard in the teen leadership course or on our website.

Student Requirements

• 20 hours completed by January 10.• Maximum of 10 of those hours can benefit

CHECHS.• All 20 can be done outside of CHECHS.• Plan approved by advisory teacher.• Power Point Presentation to advisory class.• Self-Reflection paper.• Signed log.• A list of possible opportunities, past

organizations used, and new opportunities are located under the Service Learning Opportunities tab of the teen leadership course.

Service Learning Letter Jacket

• Students are allowed to letter in Service Learning at CHECHS.

• Jacket must be bought by student.• 150 hours of Service Learning must be

done.• 50 hours must be done in the school

year, meaning not all can be done in the summer.

• Maximum of 50 hours with one organization.

CHECHS Opportunities

• Each grade level will be taking a Service Learning Field Study Trip.

• This is designed to help students in earning hours, build relationships, a common service learning vocabulary and a culture of civic engagement.

CHECHS Opportunities

• Sept. 27- Freshman at the Houston Food Bank

• Oct. 11 and 25 Sophomores at Armand Bayou Nature Center

• Nov. 1- Juniors at Plant a Seed, Feed the Need Garden

• Oct. 11- Seniors at Moody Gardens

Why Service Learning

• Research shows that incorporating service learning into classroom curriculum increases critical thinking, communication, civic responsibility, global understanding, academic development, and the ability to work in a team, all of which are skills for a 21st century learner

Spring Timeline

• Hour logs and papers Thursday, Jan. 9th in advisory.

• Presentations in advisory week of January 20-January 30
