ARTgarageNWTC’sartsinitiativehasresultedinastrongconnectionwiththeARTgarage,anon-profitgalleryandstudiocommittedtopromotingtheartsinGreenBay.NWTCisnotonlyinterestedincultivatinganappreciationforthearts,butcontributingtotheeconomicdevelopmentoftheregionbyteachingentrepreneurialskillssopeoplecanprofitfromtheirhobbies.TheCollegehasrecentlyconvertedabuildingnexttoARTgarageintoastudiospaceforwoodandclaycourses.

Duringthefall2009semester,Marketingstudentsorganizedasilentandonlineauction,selling21pieces,whichliterallyhelpedkeeptheorganization’slightson.ARTgaragealsobenefittedfromtwoAdministrativeProfessionalinternsthathelpedcoordinateajuriedartexhibitionandfundraiser.Together,thesetwoprojectsengaged17studentsin588hoursofcourse-relevantcommunityserviceandraised$7,000fortheorganization.

Currently,ARTgarage,withtheassistanceofNWTCService-Learning,isplanning“ARTmeetsHeart,”acommunitymosaicprojectwhichwillbeunveiledataFebruarygala.Theworkwillconsistof300individual6”x6”canvasescreatedbymembersofallages,abilitiesandbackgroundsdisplayedintheshapeofaheart.Communitymembersmaypurchase$25ticketsandwillbegivenarandomartworkaftertheprojectisdisassembled.NWTCdonatedallofthecanvasesandiscommittingstafftohelptheARTgaragedevelopmarketingmaterials,distributecanvasesandsecureadditionalsponsors.Twelvegrant-fundedinternationalstudentsattendingNWTCarecreatingpiecesfortheprojectalongwithanumberofcollegeemployees.

Marion House Studieshaveshown70percentofteenmothersdonotearnahighschooldiplomabyage30.NWTCisfightingthisdisturbingtrendbyshowingyoungmothersatMarionHouse’sresidentialfacilitythatacollegedegreeiswithintheirgrasp.Twenty-fiveEarlyChildhoodEducationstudentsinitiallybecameinvolvedwiththeorganizationthrougha17-weekpracticumcoursebyprovidingchildcarewhiletheirinstructortaughtaninformalparentingclasstothemothers.Seeingtheneedforamorestructuredcourse,andwantingtoexposethewomentoacollegesetting,theinstructorsoughttomovetheprogramtoNWTC.

TheService-LearningAmeriCorps*VISTAmemberatthetimeplayedakeyroleinapplyingfora$7,437grantfromtheNWTCEducationalFoundation,whichallowed27MarionHousemotherstheopportunitytobegintheircollegetranscriptswithonenon-creditcourse.EarlyChildhoodEducationstudentscontinuedtoprovidechildcareandalsomentoredthemothersastheycompletedtheprogram.MonicaZindler,MarionHousefounderanddirector,atteststotheimpactofthepartnership,saying,“ThisprojecthasprovidedoneofthemostvaluableassetstotheMarionHouseprogram.PriortotheCollege’sinvolvement,ourresidentsdidnotrealizethatpostsecondaryeducationwasevenanoptionforthem.Havingcompletedacollegeclassempowersourresidentsandgivesthemhopefortheirfuture.”

Attheendoftheterm,fourNWTCemployeesdecidedtocontinueworkingtohelpthemothersdevelopsoftskillsandcreatedTheSecretRules:WomentoWomen.Thecollegeteamorganized13workshopscoveringeverythingfrompersonalcaretodomesticviolenceforthemothers.Theyevenhostedafour-courseetiquettedinnerwiththeassistanceoftwoAmeriCorpsmembers.NWTCrecentlyexpandeditscommitmenttoeducateunderservedpopulationsbypilotinganafterschoolprograminSturgeonBay,whichallowstheparentstocompleteafree,non-creditEnglishLanguageLearnerscourse.

St. Thomas More Unfortunately,educationalprogramsareacommontargetofbudgetcutsinhardeconomictimes.GreenBayAreaPublicSchoolswasgrantedabudgetincreaseofonly0.8percentforthiscomingyear,requiringtheeliminationof27full-timepositions.EricWeydt,PrincipalofSt.ThomasMoreSchool,notestherecessionhastakenanevengreatertollonprivateschoolswhichareineligibleforgovernmentaidandinsteadrelyontuitiondollarsandprivatedonationstofinanceoperations.

NWTC’spartnershipwithSt.ThomasMoreSchoolbeganinspring2009whenonestudentparticipatedintheirReadingBuddiesandWritingTutorsprogramthroughaWrittenCommunicationclass.Heworkedwithsevendifferentstudentsoverthecourseofeightweeks.Aftercompletingtheproject,hefilmedavideopromotingserviceasalearningtechnique,whichencouraged32studentsinthesamecoursetocontribute490hourstoSt.ThomasMorethispastyear.

Keep Stepping AccordingtotheAgingandDisabilityResourceCenterofBrownCounty,asmanyas30percentofadultsages65andolderwhofallsuffermoderatetosevereinjuriesthatreducemobilityandindependence.SteppingOnisaseven-weekfallpreventionworkshopofferedbytheorganizationfor$10.AsurveyofparticipantsbytheWisconsinInstituteforHealthyAgingfounda60percentreductioninfallsduringthesixmonthsfollowingprogramcompletion.However,participantsstillindicatedadesireforadditionalstrength,balanceandwalkingtraining.

KeepSteppingisNWTC’sanswertothatrequest.Fifty-sevenPhysicalTherapistAssistantstudentsinthreedifferentcoursesworkedmorethan1,000hourstoimprove63seniorcitizens’health,wellnessandmobilitythroughsmallgroupandone-on-onephysicalactivities,healthpromotionplanning,andeducationalsessionsduringthe2009-2010academicyear.Theprogramhasbeenparticipatingintheprojectsincefall2008.

One77year-oldparticipantwhowastransportedtothehospitalforthreefallswithinasixmonthperiodpriortotakingtheclasswrote,“Ican’tbelievetheimpact[KeepStepping]hasmadeinmylife.Mybalanceisimproving,slowlybutnoticeably.Thesedentarylifestylethatsettledinduringtheyearsbeforekneereplacementisfinallygivingwaytoamoreactivelifestyle…Thankfully,Ihave‘remainedonmyfeet’sincetakingtheseclasses.Istillstumbleoccasionally,butIamableto‘rightmyself’withoutsuccumbingtothefall.”

Bay Beach Train Refurbish BayBeach,thenintholdestamusementparkintheUS,hasbeenalandmarkinNortheastWisconsinsince1892.ThecityofGreenBayParkandRecreationDepartmentassumedfullcontrolofthepropertyin1950andhascontinuedtoexpandthefacility.Theparkattractednearlyamillionvisitorsin2009,bringingin$1.6millioninrevenuewhilecostingonly$800,000tooperate.

NWTC’sAutoCollisionRepairandRefinishingTechnicianprogramrefinishedoneofthepark’strainsin2008.TheyreachedouttostudentsinPulaski,PrebleandEastHighSchools’YouthApprenticeshipprogramsforhelpwithsanding,priming,paintingandreassemblingthetrain.NWTCwasaskedtorefurbishanotherengineandthreecarsthisyearandagainchosetomentorareahighschoolstudentswhilecompletingtheproject.
