These meals are specifically designed to reverse and prevent malnutrition and are used in schools, orphanages, clinics and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. In 2014, FMSC welcomed nearly 900,000 volunteers to pack more than 229 million meals through its permanent sites and nationwide MobilePack program. The Minnesota-based charity spends 92% of total donations directly on feeding the hungry and has earned the highest 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 10 consecutive years. Visit fmsc.org for more information. Registration required at fmsc.org/volunteer Position Description: During your packing session you will be participating in an assembly line process. With the help of volunteers, dry ingredients are poured into bags, the bags are weighed and sealed, then boxed and put onto pallets. If we have volunteers that are unable to stand for long periods of time, they are welcome to sit at tables and label bags. Your packing session includes a brief orientation and video followed by packing instructions. Your packing shift will conclude with a short closing. During that time you will learn how many meals you and your fellow volunteers have packed. We have 3 locations: Eagan, Chanhassen, and Coon Rapids How to Apply: Go to the Feed My Starving Children website (fmsc.org/volunteer) to signup for volunteer shifts; no additional application or orientation is needed. Important note about tracking hours: Because of their large volume of volunteers Feed My Starving Children cannot provide confirmation via email of the hours you serve. When you volunteer there you must request a sheet of paper documenting your service; THIS PIECE OF PAPER IS THE ONLY RECORD OF THE HOURS YOU SERVE THERE SO KEEP THIS PAPER. To report your hours bring this sheet of paper into the Center for Experiential Education in C1066. In 1997, Free Arts began serving youth in residential treatment centers, domestic violence shelters, and therapeutic preschools based on the theory that art and positive relationships with adults are not a luxury but a necessity for abused, neglected and at-risk youth. Today, Free Arts Minnesota partners with 24 social service agencies and reaches over 4,000 youth across the greater metro area each year. Volunteer Opportunities: One-time Volunteers: Our Free Arts Days are a great way to experience what Free Arts does firsthand, in a short time frame. These are one day "festival of the arts" where we pair children with adult mentors who spend the day completing themed art stations. Often we also have a community artist come and lead a large group activity at these special days and provide lunch. There is always face paint at these events, so be prepared for fun! These are a great opportunity for one-time volunteers. Our Free Arts Days are spread throughout the year; contact us for specific dates and locations. Weekly Mentors: We train volunteers to be Mentors in teams of 4-6 who meet with groups of youth at one of our 23 partner agencies across the metro and surrounding suburbs. Mentors facilitate a weekly, one hour session of creative arts activities to these youth. Mentors can select their preferred age group (3-18 years old), time of day, and location for their mentorship experience. Mentors lead projects for children that incorporate painting, writing, dance, drama, music, photography, and other art media. We strive to offer children opportunities to develop healthy relationships with adults, increase their sense of self-esteem, and learn new ways to communicate through artistic expression. Because the youth we serve often have instability in their lives, we strive to provide them with mentors committed to the program for one year. Training, curriculum, art supplies, and on-going support of the mentor experience is provided by Free Arts Minnesota Staff. How To Apply: Submit an application and references online: http://www.freeartsminnesota.org/get-involved/become-a-mentor/ If you have questions, contact Deandra Bieneman, Volunteer Coordinator, Free Arts Minnesota [email protected] or 612-824-2787.
