It is my great pleasure to present you with first-ever Service Learning course manual to help students to liveout the values of compassion and service to those in need. This manual is developed by YES NetworkPakistan in the light of first year experiences and outcomes of implementing service learning program in theleading Catholic Schools. Catholic Board of Education, Lahore started service learning program in itsleading schools last year in-partnership with YES Network Pakistan. Catholic Board of Education, Lahoreremembers in all things the poor, needy and isolated. Catholic values are key to who we are and what wedo. Through service learning program, students have learnt and will continue to learn to be leaders who areresponsive to other‘s need throughout their lives. We believe it is such a beautiful way to help heal our society effectively and efficiently. We believe that helping someone else will be a personal growthexperience for every student.

While reviewing the highlights and experiences of first year of service learning program, it is very clear thatit has been a huge success. Over 200 students-led service learning projects were designed andimplemented to meet service needs of the society. Service learning has a very positive effect on student‘spersonal development and growth. They have developed a sense of caring and a sense of connectednesswith the society. All these projects had a strong connection with the curriculum. Students of all ages fromkindergarten to senior class helped in improving the lives of others in a wide range of areas. In short, it wasan exciting year with many opportunities to serve others. We express deep appreciation to all the principalsand teachers who were involved in the implementation of service learning program in their educationalinstitutions.

Catholic Board of Education Lahore will continue to extend helping hand to others. The mission of CatholicBoard of Education is to provide the highest quality and affordable education based upon the Catholicteachings. We aim to offer the finest possible education in today‘s changing world by integrating the highestquality instruction with a deep concern for service to the society. YES Network Pakistan has played a pioneer role inpromoting the concept of youth-led development in the country. YES Network Pakistan launched for thefirst time the concept of service learning successfully in the leading Catholic Schools in collaboration withCatholic Board of Education, Lahore. Pakistan is passing through a very critical period. It is getting very

difficult for the government and civil society organizations to meet the huge unmet service of the society.We are caught in innumerable challenges not because of academic imperfection but because of our inability to cultivate positive values in our society.

Education is becoming increasingly irrelevant to real issues of society. Students have become objects or passive recipients rather than actors. It is need of hour to revisit and rededicate ourselves to find newsolutions to the problems we are facing. It is time for all of us involved in the development of youth to re-examine our work. It is time for us to re-examine the real purpose of the education. The challenge toeducational institutions in Pakistan is how to instill positive values among students. Today, majority of theeducational institutions are preparing students solely for careers. They are not preparing students for service to the society.Service-learning provides an opportunity for every student to be successful. Service-learning is a stimulating, meaningful activity. It involves not only reasoning skills but also interpersonalrelationships, feelings, emotions, and self-esteem.Catholic Schools have always laid great emphasis onhelping students to acquire positive values that can serve them throughout their lives. Since both YESNetwork Pakistan and Catholic Board of Education, Lahore share common value of educating students toapply newly acquired skills and knowledge to address real-life needs in communities, they join hands tocombine student learning with service to others. Re-defining Education

The purpose of the education is not to stuff the brain with information. It should transform the mind andheart and make them pure. This important truth has been forgotten. It is important to remember thatcertificates or degrees do not signify education. Today, students get education to acquire wealth, fame,power and position but not good and positive values that can serve them throughout their lives. Servicelearning course has been started in Catholic Schools to fill the huge vacuum existing in the area of education in Pakistan. Today, we have more educated people than before, but today we have moreviolence, crime and injustice in the society. It is clear that without change in the education system there willbe no change. It is not enough to just focus on the cognitive development of the students. It is time to bringa major shift from what is happening in the educational institutions-the heavy-loaded curriculum, limited-assessments and too many books-to cultivate the spirit of sacrifice and spirit of selfless service to society. Itis time to address deficiencies in our education system. Our education systems in Pakistan are finding itdifficult to prepare students for life. Our education systems are giving too much focus on the curriculum andtheory. Our education systems have become self-centered.

Pakistan is passing through a very difficult time. It is surrounded by huge challenges such as terrorism,poverty, electricity load shedding, gas load shedding, shortage of water, illiteracy, environmentaldegradation, etc. Pakistan is running out of resources to meet these challenges. It is desperately looking for resources to address these challenges. Due to the unprecedented increase in terrorism in Pakistan,investments and improvement in the developmental projects have gone down terribly. Unemployment andunderemployment are increasing every day. Educational institutions cannot afford to remain silent or pursue the policy of wait and see.

The educational institutions need to re-think or re-define their role in addressing the challenges being facedby Pakistan. Educational institutions have so much to offer in the shape of human (students, teachers,volunteers, parents) and material (physical infrastructure such as buildings, classrooms, libraries, computer

labs, science labs, transports, etc) resources to address the present challenges. Service Learning programprovides an exciting opportunity to educational institutions to use these resources for both meeting theeducational needs of students and addressing serious social problems. Many international researches andfirst-ever research in Pakistan on service learning have proved that Service Learning program improves theacademic performance of the students, brings new energy and life to the classroom, contributes indeveloping life skills among students and improves the relationship between teacher and students.

The most striking part of service learning program is that both learning and serving are focused. Students inreal service learning programs are not only assessed on what they learn but also on whom they serve.Service Learning is more than a singular activity. It aims at helping students make the connections betweentheory and practice. It means service learning is directly linked to the curriculum. It engages students in

designing, implementing, reflecting and evaluating social, political and environmental issues. It treatsstudents as active-citizens and not as citizens-in-waiting. It aims at developing sense of responsibilityamong students about the issues around them.

A New Paradigm

Service learning is growing rapidly. It has become the most promising strategy to promote all-round

development of students. Service learning is a unique teaching methodology as it provides an opportunityfor students to use knowledge and skills in real life situations. Service learning has emerged as an inspiringstrategy to energize schools, to change the way teachers carries out their responsibilities, to meet theunmet service needs of our society and to enhance the curriculum by extending learning beyond theclassroom. Service learning is defined by different people differently. Despite of the fact, there are manydefinitions or interpretations of service learning, the core concept remains the same. Service learning is anorganized effort to combine service objectives with learning objectives. It is a systematic approach toengage students in delivery of service to others by using gained knowledge from the classroom. Servicelearning integrates service objectives with learning objectives with the goal that the activity has a positiveimpact both the recipient and the provider of the service.

Service-Learning is a form of experiential learning where students apply academic knowledge and criticalthinking skills to address genuine community needs. (Pamela and James Toole, 1994)

The National and Community Service Act of 1990, which authorized the Learn and Serve America programdefines service-learning as: "a method under which students or participants learn and develop throughactive participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of acommunity; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that isintegrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for thestudents or participants to reflect on the service experience."

Alternatively, theNational Youth Leadership Councildefines service learning as "a philosophy, pedagogy,and model for community development that is used as an instructional strategy to meet learning goalsand/or content standards.‖ Maryland State department of Education has adopted a definition fromLearning in Deed . It states:

Service-learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the realworld; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning. According to Eyler & Giles, 1999, service-learning is a form of experiential education where learning occursthrough a cycle of action and reflection as students work with others through a process of applying whatthey are learning to community problems and, at the same time, reflecting upon their experience as theyseek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves.

"Every Journey Begins With The First Step."

YES Network Pakistan has played a pioneer role in introducing and starting Service Learning program inPakistan. YES Network Pakistan in collaboration with Catholic Board of Education, Lahore launched theService Learning program in the leading Catholic Schools of Pakistan to enrich learning process of students, to mainstream students into the development process and to connect theory to practice. It islaunched to re-define the role of students in the educational institutions from passive beneficiaries to activecitizens that are making efforts to address critical issues being faced by the country. It aims at enablingstudents in applying their knowledge and skills for bringing positive change in the society. It is designed tore-define the role of teachers from leading the students to facilitating the students in experimenting newideas. It is launched to help students to develop the ability to discover for themselves rather than wait for commands from teachers. The overall goal of attaching service learning program into curriculum is to helpstudents develop positive values that can serve them throughout their lives. To accomplish this, servicelearning program is launched throughout all the grades. Service Learning program provides a remarkableopportunity to educational institutions to renew and reform. It provides teachers with an importantinstructional tool for enhancing student performance and participation. By integrating service componentinto the instruction, service learning program enables teachers to make the content more meaningful tostudents while developing their ownership for learning.

Starting a Service Learning Program

This chapter describes a model for introducing and institutionalizing Service Learning Program ineducational institutions of Pakistan. Starting a Service Learning program in educational institutions is verychallenging in Pakistan due to lack of understanding about the concept and lack of motivation amongteachers to experiment new things as well as lack of ability of teachers to take a passive role (share power)while teaching. Under such circumstances, it is necessary to begin the process of launching servicelearning program with those who have the motivation, openness and willingness to experiment new ideasand approaches for fostering positive change both in classroom and the community.

The process of launching of Service Learning program in Pakistan followed a series of thought-out steps.The following steps will help you start an effective service-learning program. While all these steps arevaluable to consider, you may not need to perform them all, or follow them in the order presented here.

The steps include:

Instructional Steps

Steps Description

Identification The first step is to identify a champion (principal,senior teacher or board member) from the institutionwho has both the commitment and clout to introducechange in the institution.

Sensitization The second step is to sensitize the person identifiedon the concept of Service Learning. It may includeorganizing single or several informal sessions toconvince the person about the need and outcomesof the Service Learning program.

Orientation The third step is to organize an orientation sessionwith the person to create in-depth awareness and toidentify possible channels for launching the ServiceLearning program.

Selection of Focal Person The orientation sessions helps to identify and selecta focal person for rolling out the Service Learningprogram in the institution in consultation with theselected person.

Training of Teachers and Distribution of Material The next step includes organizing a training sessionfor the faculty members of the school with the

assistance of focal person. The purpose of thetraining is to equip teachers with knowledge andskills as well as material on Service Learning.

Formation of a Team The training helps to identify interested and potential

teachers at each level (primary, middle and high) for rolling out and coordinating Service Learningprogram.

Designing and Execution of Service LearningProjects

This step aims at designing and execution of servicelearning projects by the students with the facilitationof the teacher.

On-going Monitoring and Mentoring It includes collecting information on continuousprocess from the team regarding the progress. This

step also includes providing mentoring supportduring the execution.

Reflection Sessions The reflection sessions play a very important role intaking stock and moving forward. The reflectionsessions are also helpful in increasing motivationand lessening frustration among teachers.

Evaluation This is a very important stage where impact of Service Learning program is assessed on students,teachers, school and parents.

Recognition This step includes appreciating the contributions of students and teachers publicly. It may includeorganizing Service Learning exhibitions and givingcertificates or cash rewards to students, teacher andthe principal.

Bringing Service Learning to Classroom

Service learning is a form of experimental learning, where students learn by doing. Effective servicelearning project incorporates four critical stages:

1. Preparation

2. Action

3. Reflection

4. Celebration

1. Preparation: Preparation stage involves four steps. It includes:

i. Brainstorming (identification of problems): It can be done by holding a brainstorming sessionwith the students for the identification of problems. To identify issues, teacher may encouragestudents to think about the critical issues being faced by our country or specificcommunity/school.

ii. Prioritization of Problems: After identification of problems, students should be encouraged toprioritize the problems, which problem or issue needs urgent attention. The prioritization or problems should be done by the students. The students should decide whether they would like

to participate in an advocacy project, research project or awareness raising project, etc.

iii. Developing goals or objectives: The third preparation activity is for students to developgoals/objectives of the service learning project.

iv. Resource Mapping: The fourth step in preparation stage is to map resources for the servicelearning project. It includes mapping existing resources and required resources. This stagealso includes tapping local resources and developing plans for mobilizing funds for the project.

It is important to catalogue available financial and human resources as well as those resourcesthat are available through in-kind donations.

v. Organizing: This is a very important activity of the preparation stage. It includes making smallteams/groups, setting out role and responsibilities, identifying a leader or leaders, developing

timeline and work plan. Brainstorm a list of tasks and determine their most logical sequence.Define the roles of each student and group of students. Decide how the work will be distributedfairly and appropriately among the students.

vi. Developing Material, Partnerships and Learning Skills: The sixth preparation activity is for students to develop project material such as posters, questionnaires, fliers, banners, etc and tolearn the skills necessary to perform service. This activity also includes identifying potentialpartners for the project from within and outside the school.

2. Action Stage: Action stage involves four steps. They include:

i. Performing service as planned

ii. Holding discussions with students and teacher to share progress and solve unanticipatedproblems

iii. Acknowledging the efforts of students that are very active and encouraging those that are shyor little slow to perform

iv. Monitoring the pace of the activities. Make adjustments to the initial plan as new information isgained and new circumstances are faced. It is important to keep the momentum of servicelearning project throughout the year. A good service learning project maintains a goodmomentum throughout its life.

3. Reflection Stage: The third stage of effective service learning project is reflection. It is a processto by which students think critically about their experience.

It is carried out through a variety of ways such as writing, talking, listening and reading aboutservice experiences.

Much of what we learn in life comes from reflecting on our experience. It requires that we providestructured time for students tothink, talk, and write about what they did and observed during theservice activity. Without reflection, we lose a great opportunity to maximize student learning.

Types of Reflection: There are three major types of reflection. These include:

a) Cognitive: It examines the new knowledge and skills gained by students from the serviceexperience.

b) Affective: It examines what students feel as a result of their experience.

c) Process: It examines what students learn from the process itself (team building, communicationskills, conflict resolution skills, etc)

Reflection is meaningful when it is carried out regularly. Reflection can be done at two levels:

II. Group Reflection

Individual reflection is important to learn about the person experience of a student.

Impact Study of First Year Service Learning Program

Analysis of survey of the impact of Service Learning projects on students and teachers of leadingCatholic Schools in Lahore

The survey involves the 6 leading Catholic schools in Lahore in which Service Learning projectswere implemented with the assistance of Youth Engagement Services (YES) Network Pakistan in 2009. Itwas for the first time in the history of Pakistan that Service Learning projects were implemented in 11Catholic schools. Out of the 11 schools, 6 schools have been chosen in which the service learning projectshave been completed. Over 100 Service Learning Projects have been completed in these schools. Theseprojects were related to all fields of life such as health, plantation, raising awareness, reducing pollution,saving natural resources, etc. In the rest of the schools, the Service Learning Projects are still in progress. A sample of 357 students and 66 teachers which were involved in these projects has been chosen from 6schools. Hence, Stratified Random Sampling has been used for this purpose. Questionnaires weredistributed among students and teachers of these schools. Close ended questionnaire were used for this

purpose. The survey was conducted to know the effects of the Service Learning Projects upon the studentsand teachers. It evaluates that how the participation in this program has strengthened the skills, abilitiesand attitudes of the respondents and it effects on the other fellow beings. The facts extracted from thesurvey are analyzed below:

a) Analysis of views of students

i) Increase in caring attitude of students for others

77% of the students believed that after the completion of their service learning projects they hadbecome more caring to a great deal. 14.6% believed that they had become caring quite a bit. 7.3% of the

respondents thought that they had become moderately caring whereas .6% of the respondents had a veryslight effect on themselves due to the service learning projects. Only .6% had no effect at all. Hence, theresults show that the majority of the students‘ attitude had been changed after the implementation of theseprojects. Thus service learning projects change the attitude of the students and make them more caring.

66.9 % of respondents gained a sense of usefulness and satisfaction after the completion of

service learning projects. 27.5 % of them felt quite a bit, 5.1 % of them felt moderately, .3% of them feltslightly and .3% of them were not satisfied with it. Hence, a large majority of students felt that after thecompletion of the project they felt that they had achieved something great and they were totally satisfiedwith it. (The results are applicable to 356 respondents).

iii)Students’ belief in becoming a better citizen A large majority of students, that is; 79.8% believed that they had become better citizens after the

implementation of their projects. 12.9% were quite a bit affected by it and 5.9% were moderately affectedby its. Only 1.1% of them thought they slightly became better citizens while .3% of them were not at allaffected by the outcome of the project. The results show that the service learning projects inculcated a

sense of accomplishment among students and due to it, the students thought that they had become better citizens of the society. The results are summarized in the table below:

iv) Increase in students’ abi lity to work in teams

72.8% of the students thought that due to the service learning projects their ability to work in teamsincreased. 20.7% agreed to it quite a bit, 5% gained the moderate ability to do so, 1.1% believed that theyslightly learned from the project to work in teams and only 0.3% believed that they did not learn from theproject that how to work in teams. Therefore, we can say that a large majority of the respondents learnedfrom the service learning projects, the ability to work in teams and were well satisfied with it. This shows thesuccess of the implementation of the Service Learning Projects.

Through the Service Learning Projects, the students‘ increase in concern for the welfare of other increased a lot. 23.8% thought that it increase to some extent. 8.1% of the students found moderateimprovement in their concern for other. 2% were slightly affected by it while 0.6% were not at all affected byit. Thus, majority of the students learned from the projects to work for the welfare of others. The results aresummarized in the table below:

Majority of the participants, that is; 58% found an increase in sense of worth or self-esteem after the completion of Service Learning Projects. 31.4% found their self-esteem to be increased to some extent,5.3% found a moderate improvement in themselves while only 4.2% of them found only a slight

improvement in them. Only about 0.3% of the students thought that the projects did not contribute in raisingtheir self-esteem. Hence, it can be said that a majority of students believed that the completion of projectsled them to think that they have accomplished something good in their life of which they are very proud of it.The results are summarized in the table below:

66.7% of the students believed that they had achieved a sense of personal achievement to a greatdeal after the completion of these projects. 26.3% found an increase in sense of personal achievementquite a bit, 5.3% found a moderate increase in it, while only 1.7% found a slight increase in sense of achievement. None of the students believed that they had not achieved a sense of personal achievementdue to the Service Learning Projects. Hence, the projects contributed a lot in raising a sense of personal

achievement in students. They thought that due to it they have achieved something worth while in their lives.

73.4% of students thought that they found an increase in their basic academic skills to a greatdeal. 19.3% thought that their basic academic skills increased quite a bit after accomplishing their projects.6.7% of them believed that their academic skills increased moderately while only 0.6% believed that itimproved slightly. Hence, the Service Learning Projects led to an increase in the basic academic skills of the students greatly. This shows the usefulness of the projects.

x) Increase in knowledge of the subject matter

When the students were inquired about the increase in knowledge of the subject matter related tothe projects, it was found that 71.7% found a great deal of increase in the knowledge of the particular

subject matter related to their projects. 22.4% found this increase quite a bit. 4.2% found a moderateincrease in the subject matter while 1.4% a found a slight increase in their knowledge. Only 0.3% thoughtthe projects did not contribute to the increase in knowledge of the subject matter related to their projects.Hence, overall the students learned a lot from their projects. The projects also helped them in learningthings which were not included in their academic curriculums.

xi) Increase in the belief that students can make a difference

After completing the projects, 66.4% of the students believed that they can really make a differenceby doing such projects. 24.6% of the students had a belief that they can make a difference to some extent,

6.7% of them thought that their contributions can make a difference to a moderate extent while only 2%thought that it can slightly make a difference. Only about 0.3% of the students thought that their contributions cannot make any difference at all. The projects raised a sense of achievement in students. Itled them to think that by their contributions, they can really make a difference in society.

xii) Increase in the sense of connectedness

About 54.3% of the students felt an increase in the sense of connectedness in them to a great dealdue to these projects. 36.1% of them thought that their sense of connectedness had increased quite a bit,8.1% thought that it increased to a moderate extent while only 1.1% thought that it increased to a slightextent. Just 0.3% of the students thought that the projects did not contribute at all in raising their sense of connectedness. Hence, a large majority of students felt a sense of connectedness in them due to theService Learning Projects.

A large majority of students, that is; 72.8% thought that the implementation of the Service LearningProjects is the practical application of their knowledge gained in the classrooms. About 21.3% thought that

they applied knowledge gained in the classroom to these projects quite a bit, 5% of them thought it hasbeen applied moderately and only just 0.8% thought their knowledge was applied to a slight extent in theseprojects. None of the students thought that the projects did not apply the knowledge gained in theclassrooms. Hence, this shows that through these projects, the students were able to see the practicalapplication of what they had been taught. The results are summarized below:

xiv) Increase in improvement of relationship with the teachers

One of the best things about the Service Learning Projects is that it greatly increased therelationship of students with their teachers. A large majority of students, that is; 82.4% thought that their relationship with their teachers had increased to a great deal. Only 12% thought that it increased quite a bit,3.6% thought that their relationship increased moderately and about 0.8% thought that it increased slightly.

Just 1.1% of the students thought that their relationship with the teachers did not improve through theseprojects. The results have shown that it is the great achievement that these projects have improvedrelationship between students and teachers.

The Service Learning Projects contributed a lot in increasing the relationship of students with other students. About 73.9% of the students thought that their relationship with their class fellows increased to agreat deal, 19.3% thought it to be increased to some extent and only 3.4% thought it to be increasedmoderately. Just 2.8% of the students believed that their relationship with other students increased slightlywhile only 0.6% thought that it did not improve at all. Hence, a large majority of students improved their relationships through these projects.

xvii) Interest of students in doing more projects

A large majority of students, that is; 78.9% were interested in doing more projects of ServiceLearning. 9.8% of students were interested quite a bit in doing another project, 7.6% were moderatelyinterested while 2.2% were just slightly interested in doing so. Only about 1.4% of the students were not atall interested in doing another project. (The results are applicable to 356 students). The Service LearningProjects left a very good impact on students. These projects helped the students not only in their self development but also in the welfare of their fellow beings. The results are summarized in the table below:

b) Analysis of views of teachers

i) Performance of students in the Service Learning Projects

71.2% teachers thought that the quality of serving learning projects made by students wereexcellent while 28.8% think that they were good. Thus the satisfaction level of teachers about theperformance of students is high. 57.6% teachers thought that students‘ willingness to work on projects wereexcellent while the rest of them (42.4%) thought that it was good. The students found it interesting to workon Service Learning projects. 59.1% teachers thought that the cooperative attitudes of students wereexcellent while 40.9 % thought that it was good. Thus, overall the students cooperated a lot with teacherswhile working on their projects.

48.5% of the teachers thought that the acceptance of supervision by the students was excellentwhile 50% thought that it was good. Only 1.5% of them thought that it was poor. Majority of the students

willingly accepted the supervision of their projects. 47% of teachers thought that the students wereexcellent in taking initiative, while 53% thought that the students were good in taking initiatives duringproject work. This shows that the students had the leadership ability and confidence to take necessaryaction required for their project work. 48.5% of the teachers thought that the students were very courteousduring their project work while 51.5% thought that they were good at being courteous to others. Hence, thestudents behaved very well while working on their projects as they were well mannered and considerate. According to 36.4% of the teachers, the dependability level of the students was high, while 62.1 thoughtthat it was moderate. Hence, the students were dependent upon each other and on teachers to someextent. Only 1.5% thought that the dependability level of students was poor. 54.5% of the teachers believedthat the project helped a lot in the personal grooming of the students to a great extent. 45.5% thought thatthe personal grooming of students occurred quite a bit. The projects helped a lot in the self development of

the students. According to 33.3% of the teachers, the students‘ punctuality and attendance rating wasexcellent while 66.7% thought that it was good.

ii) Opinion of teachers about service learning and its effects on students and on themselves

A large majority of teachers that is; 78.5% strongly agreed that Service Learning is the mosteffective strategy for students‘ development, while 21.2% of them agreed to it to some extent. Therefore, agreat majority of them believed that the best strategy to improve the self development of students is

through Service Learning. 66.7% of the teachers strongly agreed that Service Learning improves theacademic performance of students. 33.3% of them agreed to some extent. This view is in accordance withthe views of the students in which 73.4% of them strongly agreed that the Service Learning Projectscontributed a lot in the increase in their basic academic skills and knowledge. None of the studentsdisagreed with it.

When teachers were inquired about the effects of Service Learning on themselves they informedthat it contributed a lot in increasing their knowledge and skills. 74.2% of the teachers strongly agreed thatits enhanced their knowledge to a great deal while 25.8% agreed to some extent that it led to the increasein their knowledge and skills. Hence, not only the students were benefitted by the Service Learning Projectsbut also the students.

A large majority of teacher that is; 89.4% strongly agreed that Service Learning Projects hadincreased their relationship with the students to a great deal. The rest of the 10.6% also agreed to it tosome extent. This opinion of teachers is also in accordance with the views of the students in which 82.4%of them agreed to a great deal that their relationship with the teachers had become strong. This is one of the best thing about the Service Learning Projects as usually students have a fear of or are shy of communicating with their teachers.

60.6% of the teachers thought that they had fulfilled the Service Learning objectives to a great dealwhile about 39.4% of them thought that they fulfilled it to some extent. None of them disagreed with it.Hence, the Service Learning projects also raised a sense of accomplishments in teachers.

Findings from the survey of impact of Service Learning projects on students and teachers of top 6Catholic Schools in Lahore

The survey results have shown that majority of the students‘ attitudes had been changed after theimplementation of these projects. They had become more caring, courteous and concerned about others. Alarge majority of students felt that after the completion of the project they felt that they had achievedsomething great and they were totally satisfied with it. These projects inculcated a sense of accomplishment among students and made them to think that they had become better citizens of thesociety. Majority of the students learned from the projects that how to work for the welfare of others andhow to work together in teams.

The students believed that the completion of projects led them to think that they had accomplishedsomething good in their life and they were really proud of it. The Service Learning Projects contributed a lotin increasing the sense of purpose in the life of students. It gave direction to them in spending their lives for some good purpose. None a single student believed that they had not achieved a sense of personal

achievement due to the Service Learning Projects. Therefore, the projects contributed a lot in raising asense of personal achievement in students.

The Service Learning Projects led to an increase in the basic academic skills of the studentsgreatly. Overall the students learned a lot from their projects. These projects helped them in learning things

which were not included in their academic curriculums. None of the students thought that the projects didnot apply the knowledge gained in the classrooms. Hence, this shows that through these projects, thestudents were able to see the practical application of what they had been taught.

A large majority of students felt a sense of connectedness in them due to the Service LearningProjects. It is s a great achievement that these projects had improved relationship between students andteachers. These projects helped the students not only in their self development but also in the welfare of their fellow beings. The students behaved very well while working on their projects as they were wellmannered and considerate. The projects helped a lot in the self grooming of the students. Both thestudents and the teachers believed that the Service Learning Projects contributed a lot in improving their relationship with each other.

According to the teachers, the students showed improvements in their behaviors and attitudeswhile accomplishing these projects. A great majority of them believed that the best strategy to improve theself development of students is through Service Learning. Service Learning Projects contributed a lot in theincrease in their basic academic skills and knowledge of students.

When teachers were inquired about the effects of Service Learning on themselves they informedthat it contributed a lot in increasing their knowledge and skills. Hence, not only the students werebenefitted by the Service Learning Projects but also the teachers. Service Learning projects also raised asense of accomplishments in teachers. The biggest challenges faced by the teachers were to engage thestudents in practical work and staring a project. The teacher believed that they did their part in fulfilling theService Learning Objectives.

Hence, the survey has shown that the Service Learning Projects were mutually beneficial for thestudents and the teachers and created a positive effect on the community. Such projects inculcatesacademic learning, life skills, leadership skills, communication skills, management skills, self esteem andself confidence in students and helps them in their self development and self grooming of students. Itdevelops a sense of caring attitude and a sense of responsibility in students and improves their relationshipwith other fellow beings. The teachers also increase their knowledge through it while working with thestudents. It improves their relationship with the students and they get a better understanding of the feelingsof their students.

12.1 Preparation stage

Brainstorming sessions will be organized with the students. The students will come up with

innovative ideas for the project.

Teaching sessions will be held during regular classes in science periods to bring awareness

among students.

The students will be given tips about plantation and about taking care of them.

The students will be trained for performing a skit.

The students will be divided into four groups. The first group will be assigned the task to give

donations of young plants. The second group will be given the task to collect information about

different plants and vegetation. The third group will design a website and will put information on it.

They will also prepare multimedia presentation. The fourth group will help the first group in the

donation of the plants and will also make a report of the project. All the groups will participate in the

implantation of plants in the school.

The students will be provided necessary tools for plantation.

12.2 Action StageThe students will implant plants and trees in the school and will take pictures of them.

The students will give donations of plants. The name of those students who will donate plants will

be displayed on the notice board and website.

Each student will make a speech on the importance of plantation based upon the data collected

about plants and trees.

The students will perform a skit in front of the school for raising awareness about the importance

of plants and trees. The students will develop a website on which information about the project will be published.

The students will deliver multimedia presentation to the whole school about their project.

A traffic sergeant will deliver lecture to the students about traffic rules and signals.

The facilitator/teacher will give a lecture to the students on the basic English language skills in

order to make students acquainted with them. The teacher will make the students realize about

why some students cannot learn. The teachers will make the learners understand that students

who have difficulty in picking up the language skills are not ―dumb‖ or ―unintelligent‖ but they m

have difficulty due to lack of practice and attention.

A brainstorming session will be held in the classroom. The students will discuss their weaknesses

and will come up with the solutions that can address these difficulties. Students will also consider how younger children deal with English as a second language. (These questions will be discussed

during the brain storming session. How does this affect their learning? Why is this needed? Can

the weaknesses of students being identified? May this be met while conducting this service? Will

both the learning students and those being served benefit from the process? Is it possible to

implement the project, while considering the limitations and the resources they will have available?)

The students will be provided with textbooks, charts, transparencies and worksheets.

A team of ten students with mixed abilities will be selected for the project. They will be divided into

two pairs to carry out different responsibilities. The students who have strong language and

communication skills will teach students who lack such skills, while their average peers who may

not be able to tutor well will conduct research. They will compile worksheets, assessment sheets

and results. They can also circulate information about their services in other classes and will offer

tutoring help to those who need it. The results and the analysis will also be shared with the

concerned language teacher of the target group..

12.2 Action stage

The students will participate in oral and written communication activities which will demonstrate

their knowledge of the language. To check their level of English, one selected topic will be given to

them. The students will learn about that topic by reading and completing worksheets based upon

that topic.

The students will teach week students about the basic language skills. The target audience will be

selected by three ways:

a. The language teacher will be asked to point out the weak students.

b. The lead students will conduct a test or an interview to select students from the class.

c. The students will be offered help and will be asked to come forward.

The research team will compile worksheets, assessment sheets and results.

Post tests will be conducted and will be matched with the pre-tests to judge the performance of the

During the evaluation phase, students and the facilitator will examine the planning process,

The first group of students will collect information about human activities which produce carbon

dioxide. They will make use of histograms, pie charts, mean, mode and median to compare the

most destructive activities of humans leading to the production of carbon dioxide.

The second group of students will observe increase in temperature of various cities of Pakistan for

the last ten years. They will present their information in the form of graphs for comparison.

The third group of students will prepare a plan for energy reduction campaign in order to help

absorb carbon dioxide in atmosphere. The students will raise awareness among people to use

such appliances which increases Global Warming. The students will visit different organizations

and will inquire form them about ways for reducing pollution. They will persuade these

organizations to take part in the campaign for energy reduction.

The students will interview experts who have specialized in the subject of Global Warming. The

students will collect useful information from them and will also inquire them about ways for

reducing Global Warming.

The students will give presentation to their school fellows and to the students of nearby schools

about Global Warming by making use of Audio Visual Aids.
